For a couple of hours on a recent Thursday, Sen. Kamala Harris of California became the favorite to win the Democratic Party's 2020 presidential nomination.

According to the oddsmakers, that is.

PredictIt, a website that allows election junkies to place real money behind their political prognostications, has been asking thousands of its traders who they think will be the party's next White House standard-bearer. Harris, just entering her 12th month as a senator, has remained among the top three candidates since the market opened Aug. 30.

The trio of other front-runners – Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and former Vice President Joe Biden – are no surprise given their well-established national followings.

It's the 53-year-old Harris who has rocketed up the chain of fresh possibilities this year, as she's been feted by elite donors, fawned over by the Democratic establishment and elevated by a smitten national press corps.

As the cultural and ideological antidote to the current president, her ascension was almost inevitable. But it's also been in motion for years.

Ever since she stepped into the public arena, Harris has been bathed in great expectations. When he was president of NBC Universal, CNN's Jeff Zucker broke his policy of supporting candidates and introduced her to New York power players as "important for the entire country."

Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa predicted in August that "she's going to be knocking on doors in Iowa." In defending her against liberal critics in September, Hillary Clinton singled Harris out as one of her "favorite Democrats." Later that month, Gwainevere Catchings Hess, president of The Black Women's Agenda, introduced Harris at a luncheon as "the unsilenced, the uncensored, the unstoppable."

At a time when the Democratic Party remains adrift in the political wilderness, still painfully sorting out its last national election loss while simultaneously trying to turn the page anew, Harris has vaulted over a fleet of venerable talent to bear the torch of former President Barack Obama's legacy for the next generation.

But as the rules of the nonstop news and social media cycle dictate, with breakneck elevation comes severe scrutiny. Even as she's still finding her freshman footing, Harris has been foisted into the meat grinder, drawing early fire from liberal activists who suspiciously view her as the next anointed choice of the aristocratic party pooh-bahs who propped up Clinton.

Obama had the "it" factor and he even intrigued some of us Conservatives with his talk(even if it turned out to be a load of crap). He had charisma and a quick wit.


Kamala is simply being pumped because she's a black liberal woman. Beyond that, there's not much there.

Yeah, I don't like that chick. She's way too out in left field for me. The problem is she's gaining political juice: she's smart, but she's movin way too fast for us to taker her seriously.

If we could trick the left into any sort of Kamala/Warrner/Hillary(redux) candidates that would be just terrifiic. Trump would barely have to campaign.

You don't seem very aware of reality.
 
I've been following Kamala Harris on Twitter for about a year.

I like her, and if she keeps going in the right direction, I'll vote for her.

Unless Michelle Obama runs. ;) ;)
 
I have no intention of voting for someone simply because of their race or sex.

If she has a political history I can accept if not agree with completely, and she provides a political platform I can also agree with enough to consider her viable, then we'll see.
 
The Democrats better get a standard bearer soon!

Ironic, considering.
At least the presidency wouldn't be an entry-level job for her. And I'd call being the Attorney-General for California an accomplishment, wouldn't you? Nowhere near Trump's experience in bankruptcy court, but whatever.
Near as I can tell, Trump's major accomplishment was being born on third base. And selling more snake-oil than anyone before him.
 
Page two and nobody's listed a single reason why Harris is bad. The most cogent thing anybody's said is "she moves too fast," whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.

I've been following her for awhile.

If she become competitive, I'll definitely consider her.

What was Trump being pumped as? If you're asking for a solid track record, working your way up through the system, becoming qualified for the presidency, that seems like it ain't gonna happen anymore. Play to the lowest common denominator, leave nobody behind, those are the truisms that make successful TV and they're what elects presidents these days.

As a Republican, she terrifies me. She's well spoken, an uber Californian liberal and she's shown she's got what it takes to get the job done.


If you nominate her, we're toast. There's no way around it.

She's a powerful, intelligent minority woman with a history of law enforcement and not letting clowns and perjurers like Sessions off the hook. And that's SCARY!

Couldn't care less that Harris is a woman or a minority, but she has a lot of fight in her and I agree with her on the issues.

Nope. She doesn't stand a chance against Gillibrand and Warren. Only way she'll have a chance is if they don't run, and she's still got Bernie Sanders and Vice President Joe Biden to get through. Not gonna happen.

Biden and Sanders are 75 and 76 respectively. I like them, but it's really best that somebody younger do the job.
