This is an odd thing that bothers me. Every year it seems to become more common for people in my community to blare out loud, profane rap music from their cars or stereos in public places where families and young kids may congregate. Now if it were a white supremacist or anti gay preacher or antifa activist who was screaming on a street corner then it would not bother me in the least no matter how much I may disagree with their message I would feel they have a 1st amendment right to share it. But this rap music thing is too much. When I am in town with my family one of the last things I want to hear is...

"Get low, get low, get low get low!
To the window, to the wall!
Til the sweat drop down my balls
Til all these bitches crawl
Til all skeet skeet mother****ers, all skeet skeet god damn!
Til all skeet skeet mother****ers, all skeet skeet god damn!"

Not exactly child friendly stuff. Some of my friends love this stuff, I can't stand it, and I think you should be free to listen to it all you want in your own space, but blasting it next to the playground at the park? I generally consider myself live and let live but if they started passing laws to fine or lock these people up, I doubt I would protest too hard. Is this now an acceptable thing in society?

The song will make little sense to most kids. The ones that it does, have heard worse. But this isn't a speech issue as much as disturbing the peace issue.

Let me give you some historical context from my state.

https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/2301013

Thursday the Sunshine State’s highest court unanimously struck down a state law that made driving with loud music illegal. The case was Florida v. [Richard] Catalano, et al, in which a Clearwater attorney fought a ticket he received for blasting some Justin Timberlake jams from his car stereo.

In the final opinion of the Court, Justice Jorge Labarga wrote, "The right to play music, including amplified music, in public foray is protected under the First Amendment.”

In certain neighborhoods it probably is acceptable. In certain areas, it may be deemed disturbing the peace. In certain areas you shouldn’t be walking on the streets with your kids... I live in suburban Chicago, five miles from the city. Never hear the stuff.

Weird. I was in the wealthier part of town on Halloween and their was a kid playing this kind of music through their hoverboard speakers as they rode door to door to Trick or Treat. It irritated the hell out of me, which I am sure is the point of doing it.

That will be overturned fast.

There is no constitutional right to play your music so loud (louder than reasonable) it disturbs others. Jorge is not a very smart judge.

It has held up for 5 years so I doubt it will change much. I definitely admire your laid back attitude about it.

While I agree with you that this is obnoxious... you seriously think ethnic genocide is a more kid-friendly message than some bawdy sexual talk?

Dude. This is why our culture is messed up. We think torture is more socially acceptable than sex.

I mean, I'd prefer not to hear either when I'm walking around in public. But just sayin'. That's kind of messed up.

And the pantie wastes that listen to this crap probably are the same ones that need safe rooms when they hear anything slightly critical of them.

As a child I hid my swearing from adults, as an adult I hide my swearing from children... so as a hypocrite, who am I to censor someone else's music in public?

Cursing, the idea that there are bad words, is just a childish superstition anyway. These words simply describe physical acts or body parts/waste, when the other words for the same things wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

This is what Kalifornia law says:

PC 415(2); Any person who maliciously and willfully disturbs another person by loud and unreasonable noise.

Or, possibly...

VC 27007, No driver of a vehicle shall operate, or permit the operation of, any sound amplification system which can be heard outside the vehicle from 50 or more feet when the vehicle is being operated upon a highway, unless that system is being operated to request assistance or warn of a hazardous situation.

This is the kind of sub-cultural ****, yes, ****, America exports. And the left whines about DJT's tweets? However, you will not find any leftist whining about the crap out of Hollywierd or the music industry.

Go figure.

In the final opinion of the Court, Justice Jorge Labarga wrote, "The right to play music, including amplified music, in public foray is protected under the First Amendment.”

So what's the issue? It's protected speech. It's an "acceptable thing in society."

If you don't like the music, turns yours up louder or invest in a good set of noise cancelling headphones.

Would you be complaining as loudly if it were country music, singing about getting drunk and cheating on your wife?

Exactly. Everybody gets all bent out of shape about swear words, when swear words are just social constructs, anyway.

Hate speech is ok, but not hip hop. Wow. Ok.

I mean, if you had left it at a discussion about bylaws, I probably would have been on board with you, I hate when people swear or have cussing music when I have my 5 year old around too...but bringing up freedom of speech, and showing tolerance for white supremacists but not rap music, that took it to a whole next level where I'm left in the WTF zone. You definitely inserted some spice into this otherwise bland dish, I'll give you that...wow.

Politics aside Nate....................where is the artwork in the words.

Freaking nursery rhymes with bad grammar.

Oh, wow - that's almost as bad as Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold"!

Here I come again now baby
Like a dog in heat
Tell it's me by the clamor now baby
I like to tap the streets
Now I've been smoking for so long
You know I'm here to stay
Got you in a stranglehold baby
You best get out of the way
The road I cruise is a bitch now baby
You know you can't turn me 'round
And if a house gets in my way baby
You know I'll burn it down
You remember the night that you left me
You put me in my place
Got you in a stranglehold now baby
You're gone, I crushed your face
Yeah, sometimes you want to get higher
A sometimes you gotta start low
Some people think they gonna die someday
I got news you never got to go old

I am shocked! What do you think those words mean to a young man growing up? That's it's ok to treat women like **** and they are 'bitches'? You honestly think it's just 'bawdy sexual talk' You don't sound at all like the person here that has been all over the sexual misconducts and wanting change on how these things are viewed. Start with this kind of lyrics being ingrained in boys minds.

Sounds like some confused American thing to say. Brazil outlaws racial hate groups and racial hate speech and consequently has one of the lowest racial hate crimes rates in the world.

After the brutality of slavery and over 100 years of Jim Crow, nurtured under white supremacist speech, if that can be tolerated and protected then over sexualized rap song can be too.

And I'm not one to excuse things by saying something stupid like: TV and music doesn't influence people.

Both do influence people. Otherwise neither would be used to advertise things to consumers. I was raised on rap music. I respect rap but yes some rap songs can negatively affect one's spirit and thinking. If you had a anti-Jew or white supremacist song that sounded good in melody to people it would cause outcry from liberals and Democrats.

Influence and "make someone do something" are two different things. TV and music can't make you do x, y, z but they can influence you in a direction.

Some rap songs aren't intended to promote violence or sex but rather to express how conditions set about a potential outcome. Such as this classic rap song below:

Warning: R Language and Content in Video Below:

I can't speak to today's hip hop, it's been a few years since I stayed current, but it's like any other genre. Some bands are like Rush and Pink Floyd, some bands are like KISS and ACDC. If you're serious about wanting to see examples of "artwork in the words", I can give you a few places to look. :)

??? IM not even sure if you are being serious lol

couple things. Your examples cant be protected without this also being protected. Cant separate the two really.
There could be a matter of the dirty words and what they are but even that is a grey area since its words.

the issue or case you may have is disturbing the peace. how loud the music is etc could be a factor but not content, again unless theres profanity laws but those typically involve the f word etc

lastly and this is just me personally, id rather my kids over hear that song 1000s times than any bigoted white supremacist or anti gay preacher but thats me

I can clearly see the annoyance factor but I wouldn't support any suppression of free speech based on genre of music and would willfully fight against it. that crap was already tried in certain ways and it lost just like it should have.

If the so called dirty words were regulated in public and VERY specifically regulated like to amplified audio in public location near schools without a permit or something maybe but not any other way because again how do you justly separate that from an everyday person just saying that on the street.

It's not a content issue, or at least it shouldnt be but a decible issue.

I can't say I agree. I looked a bit earlier but couldn't find the Newsweek OP at the time that used the euphemistic "ripping out vaginal walls." That kind of violence against women is a bit of a content issue for me. I wonder if guys ever even think about some of the terms they use for having sex with a woman--"banging," "hammering," "tearing her up," and etc.

In my defense I did not claim it was rational, just how I feel.
