Free speech and Rap music

So what's the issue? It's protected speech. It's an "acceptable thing in society."

If you don't like the music, turns yours up louder or invest in a good set of noise cancelling headphones.

Would you be complaining as loudly if it were country music, singing about getting drunk and cheating on your wife?

Oddly, no I would not. Only the profane rap/hip hop stuff bothers me to this degree. Not sure why.

Exactly. Everybody gets all bent out of shape about swear words, when swear words are just social constructs, anyway.

Before you get all postmodernist, there are good reasons we have such a social construct, isn't there?

I am shocked! What do you think those words mean to a young man growing up? That's it's ok to treat women like **** and they are 'bitches'? You honestly think it's just 'bawdy sexual talk' You don't sound at all like the person here that has been all over the sexual misconducts and wanting change on how these things are viewed. Start with this kind of lyrics being ingrained in boys minds.

I think that touches on the issue. A lot of the same people who decry the behavior seem to have little problem with the speech and culture that glorifies it.

This is an odd thing that bothers me. Every year it seems to become more common for people in my community to blare out loud, profane rap music from their cars or stereos in public places where families and young kids may congregate. Now if it were a white supremacist or anti gay preacher or antifa activist who was screaming on a street corner then it would not bother me in the least no matter how much I may disagree with their message I would feel they have a 1st amendment right to share it. But this rap music thing is too much. When I am in town with my family one of the last things I want to hear is...

"Get low, get low, get low get low!
To the window, to the wall!
Til the sweat drop down my balls
Til all these bitches crawl
Til all skeet skeet mother****ers, all skeet skeet god damn!
Til all skeet skeet mother****ers, all skeet skeet god damn!"

Not exactly child friendly stuff. Some of my friends love this stuff, I can't stand it, and I think you should be free to listen to it all you want in your own space, but blasting it next to the playground at the park? I generally consider myself live and let live but if they started passing laws to fine or lock these people up, I doubt I would protest too hard. Is this now an acceptable thing in society?
What if it was Elvis that was being blasted. Would that make any difference?

That's kind of the thing about a free society. People are free to do stuff that you might not like. Hell they're even free to be obnoxious assholes.

I'm not much of a fan of rap music, though I'll admit there's some I like. And I'm sure most rappers aren't fans of the music I like.

You might be surprised. Far more of them are students of the arts than you would expect, also a significant % are gay. Did you know Tupac did balet?

The last time I got stuck in a situation like this I was in traffic on a work trip in Point Loma. We were at a total Jam up on our way into town and some car was blasting super loud rap music. I figured I'd do the most mature thing I could since I couldn't leave my car, I put on double hearing protection that I had for work and put in my Weird Al CD mix of just his Polkas that I had in the car; Then turned the rental car volume as loud as it would go and rolled my windows down. After 5 minutes of Polka fun, the other car decided to turn their radio down, so I reciprocated. /shrug

The double Hearing protection was like Gold that day I tell you.

Art is not safe.

Musicians have been writing and singing about humping and sex for hundreds of years. There were baudy and vulgar recordings created in the 1930s by blues artists.

True. I'm not talking about the sex per say, just the way it's portrayed. Most rap music seems take it to a lower level. Degrading women is common.

"So we could never be a couple hun / F*ck love / All I got for hoes is hard d*ck and bubblegum." - Big L
"Bitches ain't sh*t but hoes and tricks / Lick on these nuts and suck the d*ck." - Snoop Dogg
"Once again I gotta punch a bitch in her sh*t / I'm icy bitch, don't look at my wrist / Because if you do, I might blind you bitch." - Jasper Dolphin of Odd Future
"I know she like chocolate men / She got more n*ggas off than Cochran." - Kanye West
"My little sister's birthday / She'll remember me / For a gift I had ten of my boys take her virginity." - Bizarre
"Slut, you think I won't choke no whore / Til the vocal cords don't work in her throat no more?!" - Eminem
"You ain't gonna let me f*ck you and I feel you / But you gone suck my d*ck, or I'll kill you." - Chief Keef

Opponents have been making the same case against music the consider offensive since the 1920. As a musician myself I have recorded and published material that’s readily available that some would find offensive. These kids are just writing about ****ing women, many of my songs are about killing them. Art is not safe.

Not really. The only reason that **** is considered a profane word instead of poop is because we made it that way. And why? What makes that word any different than poop?

Why is one profane and not the other?

I would not be bothered in the least. Only this particular type of rap/hip hop bothers me.

Perhaps, but words have power. If I say I want to kill the president, then there is a good chance the Secret Service will be at my door even if I don't mean it.

Because your words are threatening. They are considered a criminal threat. There is a difference in threatening words and words that some people consider profane.

Threats can range all the way from harrassment to a gross misdemeanor to a felony. Not really much anybody can do if I say the word "****," because there is no real law against it. There may be silly little "disorderly conduct" laws or something against it, but a good lawyer can get you off, because it infringes upon your right to freedom of speech.

I love rap music, including some pretty profane songs. Nothing wrong with that. But people should show courtesy for those around them.

When does art become obscenity?
I find L'Origine du monde by Gustave Courbet obscene, apparently Facebook does as well. But it’s still a ****ing priceless work of art that’s hanging in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Ok. Honestly I think some percentage of this is just that you don't quite understand modern linguistics, but ok.

How is that worse than promoting ethnic genocide?

That's the point here.

I love bass boosting rap music in the car with my friends.

I understand modern linguistics just fine. No, that's not my point.

How can you think rap lyrics is just bawdy sexual talk, while advocating hard in other threads for changing how men treat women?

Do you know what "bawdy" means?

Bawdy: indecent; lewd; obscene. Synonyms include things like "licentious," and other words indicating a lack of morality.

Obviously if I think it's bawdy then I don't agree with it.

However, I still think there is a degree of magnitude's difference between sexual obscenity, and genocide.

I mean, do I have to think everything on earth is equally bad to disagree with any of it?

I think murder is worse than theft, too. Does that mean I'm not allowed to speak out against theft, because I don't consider it equal in magnitude to murder?

This is frickin' ridiculous.
