A Georgia networking event wants to help white people 'Come Meet a Black Person'

It's pretty ****ing stupid to begin with when you have to think about the skin pigment of your friends.

Don't force your blackness on me, and I promise not to force my whiteness on you.......................................wanna go fishing?

What's blackness? What's whiteness?

Why do this as a "Meet a Black person" event? Why make it all about race? Can't you do the same thing with a "Help clean up the park" event? What the hell am I supposed to do at an event like this?

Because it's about race. Do you have a problem with discussing race issues and solutions? Why do you avoid it and substitute BS?

Do I pay my $15 and get to ask the black person if he or she really likes fried chicken and basketball? If I cough up another $5 can I touch their hair? What the hell is the point of this!!??

Again you ignore the issue. You think the issue is fried chicken? Are you really so ignorant or does any attempt to improve race relations trigger you into spewing racist crap?

Seriously, if you want people to get together and talk about stuff that matters then build your event around something that matters. This is......I really don't know what it is.

You want to call it racist. How pathetic.

Racist OP is racist.

Why pretend race is not the issue....when race is the issue?

The stated goal of the group is to bring together people of difference races, who are interested and open to meeting people of a different race. Why pretend it's about cleaning up a park (or whatever)? That would be dumb.....the very kind of unnecessary "political correct" nonsense that most conservatives love to complain about.

You don't reduce racism and bigotry (which are not the same things) by pretending to ignore race. Everyone recognizes race. Seeing race doesn't equate with being a racist. And anyone who says they don't see race is a liar.

I really don't understand your confusion here.

If your circle of friends is based on racial demographics you might just be a racist.

What's the point of being friends with someone just because they're a different race than you are? Doesn't it make more sense to be friends based on common interests, shared values and mutual respect?

I apologize for my racism.

You don't believe forcing a derogatory name on a small group of people serves to marginalize them?

You think calling gays 'faggots' is not a problem? If I decide to call lesbians 'dikes', that's fine? If everyone does that, there's no problem?

I figured my answer covered your question. I don't consider racial diversity to be the least bit important in picking friends.

This is not about picking friends. This is about racism and using exposure to fight it. Works in the military and other places.

Reducing this to "people who care about skin color and friendship are racists" is stupid and pathetic racist rhetoric.

You completely miss the point and the big picture and substitute racist garbage. Accident?

If your circle of friends is based on racial demographics you might just be a racist.

Umm....no. That's sounds exactly like what it is....some silly made up right-wing nonsense.

Red Herring alert!!!

You just created a false narrative that has not been suggested (or even hinted) by anyone, including the group promoting the social events in question.

No one sees the title "Come Meet a Black Person" demeaning in any way? Like they're some kind of sideshow? I think it's ridiculous and insulting. ****ing stupid.

So "Come Meet a Black Person" is about something other than race? It sure as hell sounds like a call to associate for no other reason than race.

Alright.

I'm not going to dispute the statistics. Based on my experience they're probably accurate. I also figure that the organizer's goal is to encourage interaction. That's fine.

However

Is it? I wonder. Then again I've been military all my life. I will say most of my friends are retired military or have been military or worked for the military as a civilian. All races and creeds. Looking around where I live now being retired, in my community if one wants to call it that. It's about as diverse as one can get, to include several inter-racial married folks.

Now I live pretty much out in the country, not the big city which has its black section, white section, hispanic secion and asian sections. So maybe a program like this is what the big cities need.

What's blackness? What's whiteness?

Indeed. And when you get to hang out with a black person are you getting the REAL black experience? Cuz...they are all the same...right?

This is the second silliest event I have seen in a long time. The first of course was the scream helplessly at the sky debacle.

Exposure to people of other races, religions and such has proven, time and time again, to reduce racism and other bigotry. The military is an excellent example. I knew more than one person who abandoned racism as a result of knowing a black person/people. It dispels prejudice resulting from ignorance and provides opportunity for friendly discussion of race issues.

Exposure to other cultures is awesome. Join a fishing club. Go shooting. Take up hobbies. Meet people. It’s ****in GREAT. We used to do that when we were 3-4 years old and moved into an new neighborhood. Some folk I reckon managed to lose that ability and need some sad little encounter group to meet real live black folk.

Exposure and interaction works regarding race issues. There's nothing wrong with events based on this fact.

How can one reject government programs and regulations and, at the same time, reject grass roots efforts? That seems to paint an ugly picture of the person.

What else would they be? There are black hispanics, but they're not very common

Mulattos are not common? Aside from Argentina and Southern Chile you think Central and South Americans look white?

Government programs are life. This is an event. It’s rather silly.

So you don't want the government to improve race relations and you don't want grass roots efforts to improve race relations. What do you think that makes you look like?

I can understand the excuse "keep the government out of it". What's your excuse for rejecting grass roots efforts?

You know I don’t much give a **** about what you think I look like. And I know you don’t have the capacity to couch an argument honestly. We are pretty square in what we think of each other.
You give a great example in your post. I didn’t say anything about government improving race relations. I said government is life. Real life. I work in a very mixed work environment and you know what we don’t have to do? Experience race relations. I know who I work with. I know who I hang out with. Race doesn’t much matter with any of it. And I never said you should not go to the silly grass roots event. I said it was silly. I think people that need an encounter group to get to know people based on their race are morons. If you are over the age of 2 and have hang ups about race you are a moron. If you are a ****ing adult and have hang ups about race you are a TRUE ****ing moron. An encounter group probably isn’t going to change that.

It’s 2017. If you are ****ed up about race in this day and age? It’s not an accident.

Silly? That's ignorant and wrong. Mountains of scientific evidence gathered over decades proves that exposure and interaction improves race relations.

Perhaps you'd like to revisit your position with the understanding that it works. Or, you can reject all efforts at improving race relations and look like a racist.

Nah....maybe I’ll let people like you go enjoy your silly encounter groups. Cuz apparently you need them.

I'm not the one that appears racist here, you are. You reject all efforts, government and grass roots, to improve relations.

It must be a hell for you when someone doesn't reject grass roots efforts to improve race relations. Perhaps you should stick to the compound.

Mulattos are not common? Aside from Argentina and Southern Chile you think Central and South Americans look white?

and Uruguay, and a signicant chunk of Paraguay.

it's not a matter of "looking white" the majority of Mexicans and central Americans have predominately spanish heritage, they may be Mestizos but they are considered "white" by the census.

relative to non-black hispanics mulattos are not common. in the US only 2.5% of self identified hispanics identify as "black"
