SNL's First female Black Comedian Host

Caryn, no one calls her Whoopie offset, has had a running feud with Lorne Green almost forever, since Queen Shenequa left SNL, having nothing to do with show business or SNL. It's kind of amazing that she came back with some guest spots, but hosting is a whole different ballgame. I doubt either recall the cause of the feud, but they both have tempers.

At the prompting of NBC execs, Lorne was offered a guest appearance on the View last winter. He demurred, claiming he was looking forward to enjoying dental work that created a schedule conflict. When an NBC rep reached out to Lorne's dentist to arrange a schedule change for the dental appointment, the receptionist said, "Mr. Greene has no pending appointments for the next three months." from the NY Post's Page Six.

I've a copy of a great photo, Lorne with his arms on a young Whoopie's shoulders, and Gilda Radner's shoulders at the same time. I wonder if it was a sexual harassment feud? :) At that time, Whoopie was still working comedy clubs, and Gilda was one of her ardent fans. Story was Gilda tried to get Whoopie a part in Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles. Mel said "there were no black women sheriffs in the old west, some Texas and Arizona black rangers, but no women sheriffs. We need a sheriff. Anne did my research." Being his mother's son, Mel was always good at shifting blame. Like all mothers, Mel's mother was great at instilling guilt with no sex.

HAve you asked Whoopie to see if she was the one that turned it down.

It doesn't look to me that she has the personality to do a 1.5 hour sketch show.

When she did those movies she was already past her comedy career.

Exactly just look at The View.

"If" that is true that is kinda shocking . . . .

Whoopi goldberg and Wanda Sykes, some of the best comedians period should have been shoes-ins but that doesn't mean they weren't asked.

At least they have had black comedian cast members, not many, like 5 or 6but they have. Mya Rudolph, Leslie Jones, Sasheer Zamata, Ellen Cleghorne and some others.

Another hurdle and correct me if im wrong, most times hosts are hot BEYOND stand up comedy arent they? Like they are a leading role in a movie or at least co star in a major movie. Not many black women comedians have done that.

Ive seen sommore and adele givens live, they are hilarious but besides real comedy fans I bet most people dont know them.

Where is Moms Mabley when we need her

I don't give a rat if SNL has or has not had a "black" female comedian host the show.

It is past time that the news quit bringing up , this is the "first (blank), to do something, or a (blank) has never done X. If we are to consider all of us the same no matter what race/gender/etc., quit bringing attention to such bs. idk.

SNL needs to get better comedians on the show anyway. I miss the days with Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi. Jane Curtin, Bill Murray and Lauraine Newman, and Gilda Radner.

Is it because I have became old or has SNL fallen so far from the comedic gem it was early on with the likes of Chevy Chase and John Belushi?

The few times I tried to watch it since the early 90s have been painful.

There was the original era w/ those people you mention, then there was the late-80s/early-90s. Wonderful mix of the left-over good comics with up-and-comic newer ones.

It feels like we are beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel with this DIVERSITY RAH RAH! business.

We need to find a new hobby.

The latter.

Hey, maybe we could all smoke drugs and pretend to support Trump.

That could be a neat hobby.

WE USED TO GET HIGHER!

Yup, pulling the leg of the humorless has its rewards. However, you're wrong again, I wasn't mocking your spelling, I was mocking your verbal ignorance. Who elected you to set the rules for the net?

You have me confused with someone else, I just like poking at grammar Nazi's. You just happen to be the mole that popped up.

" In 40-plus years on the air, they never had a black female comedian host. "
Too risky.
The idea is to keep the ratings going and keeping the viewers awake long enough on a Saturday night after the 11:00 news. Other words lets go out and party.

Well they have had black female hosts before. And plenty of women hosted SNL. And plenty of black people in general. And definitely black female cameo's (including Whoopi).

43 years, means roughly 500 shows---only 12 times with a black female host. Pretty sad.

I do not get what is sad about 12 black females hosting SNL?

The fact is that SNL has always been a diverse show. If you look at the list of hosts, cameos, and performers your little sad story makes no sense at all.

Its too bad she wasnt funny. Affirmative action comedians are no more successful than affirmative action presidents.

If they were going to bring on a first, it should have been someone like Sommore.

Troll away.

Tiffany isn't half bad in the right venue.

This isn't a matter of pure diversity for diversity's sake.

Monique had a starring role in "Precious". She wasn't asked to host.

Wanda Sykes has been a huge comedienne for a very long time. Never asked to host.

Even their own Alumni, Leslie Jones, wasn't asked to host in order to promote her terrible Ghostbusters garbage.

SNL never bother's to even consider reaching out to minorities for the most part.
