The Trump administration on Wednesday tightened travel and commercial ties to Cuba, part of its effort to roll back former President Barack Obama’s historic opening with Havana.

The new rules come nearly five months after President Trump announced he would reverse Obama-era policies that loosened the decades-long trade embargo against the communist island, an attempt to fulfill a promise he made during the 2016 campaign.

The changes, which take effect Thursday, restrict Americans’ ability to travel to Cuba and prevent business deals with certain entities controlled by the Cuban government and military.

This is what I hate about Republicans. Their claims about being the party of "freedom" is total BS. I guess I can travel to Saudi Arabia and China but not Cuba? Why? WTF?!

Why did Trump need to do this? Why doesn't he ban travel to Saudi Arabia which is an oppressive theocratic monarchy? China has a 99% conviction rate and an abysmal human rights record. Why not ban travel to China?

Am I not free to go where I want? Why is my government taking away my freedom?

You can still go to cuba, you cant go to these places that directly benefit the regime.

Under the new rules, most individual visits to Cuba will no longer be allowed, and U.S. citizens will again have to travel as part of groups licensed by the Treasury Department for specific purposes, accompanied by a group representative. Why would Cuba launch these sonic attacks? Obviously it's Russians or some other group trying to create problems. Cuba wants U.S. tourism very badly.

I dont really think my beliefs fit neatly into any one political box but i most closely identify with libertarians and i am pleased with the job Trump is doing so far. I also agree that you should be allowed to travel anywhere you want that will have you.

In principle you have a fair gripe but in practicality, you had 5 months notice. You should of taken advantage of that window of opportunity when you had it.

This should not of come as a surprise to you. Trump is doing what he pledged he would do. He is undoing obamas EOs.

The travel restrictions were put in place by Congress beginning in the Kennedy (D) Administration and are written in such a way that did not intend the wide latitude Obama took but do allow some Presidential discretion. Those travel restrictions have remained in place and/or have been enhanced through Kennedy (D), Johnson (D), Nixon (R), Ford (R), Carton (D), Reagan (R), Bush 41 (R), Clinton (D), and Bush 43 (R).

So had Obama not removed the travel restrictions against the advice of Congress and for that matter the Cuban-Americans who are here, this wouldn't have been an issue at all. As it was, Obama did not remove the all the trade embargoes in place, but did allow individual travel to Cuba 'for educational purposes' outside of the formerly required registered educational tours and provided that records of the trip were kept for five years.

You can still visit Cuba by joining a registered educational tour.

Where do you draw a line between freedom and safety? After the recent use of acoustic weapons in Cuba in is understandable why travel may be restricted. Same way you can't travel ti North Korea just be cause you want to.

if your already booked I think you can still go. I never realized there were countries that we are not allowed to go.
Take Libya, Portugal, Syria, Yemen, Iran and North Korea off your list too.

You can still go to cuba. you can't go to hotels owned by certain governmental entities.

Again, am I not a free man living in a free country? Why can't I go wherever I want?

I don't want to join an educational tour. Why do I have to lie? Why do I have to pay some tour extra money to continue a charade? Where's my freedom?
