I'm sure the FBI was happy to pass along whatever wild rumors they heard in an effort to discredit the man and his movement. To them, he was a terrorist and a communist.

and u will swear every word the FBI writes about Trump is gospel truth.

Sounds like part of their overall effort to harm the civil rights movement. They'd do anything, even down to sending threatening letters to parents of college students who attended suspect meetings.

The National Archives published more than 600 new records Friday relating to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy -- and some addressed civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. and his multiple alleged affairs.

People who have no problem with electing someone who brags about sexually assaulting women have less than nothing to say about alleged affairs .

Are you saying the FBI is still trying to oppress the civil rights movement? It's still the same FBI?

The orgies thing I believe from what I read is a total fabrication, the white prostitutes detail especially seems to have nothing to back it up.

Ralph David Abernathy did acknowledge in his 1989 autobiography, And the Walls Came Tumbling Down, that Martin Luther King engaged in extramarital affairs (evidence of which was sometimes recorded by the FBI through hotel room bugs), but he said absolutely nothing in his book about King’s supposed “obsession with white prostitutes,” King’s using “church donations to have drunken sex parties,” or King’s hiring “white prostitutes and occasionally beating them brutally.” In fact, Abernathy stated quite emphatically that he never knew King to have any sexual involvement with white women at all:

However, it seems be true that MLK did indeed have extra marital affairs and the possibility of him having had a child in one of those is certainly a possibility.

But ultimately, if it is true, it makes him as human as any of us and does not take away from the things that he did.

Plus we have an emphatically and horrifically racist OP who has a particular agenda in posting all this.

That's kinda why Hoover did it. He bugged King's hotel rooms, he harassed members, had threatening letters created/sent anonymously etc etc . He was really pissed when King won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Took 6 posts to mention that. You guys are slacking off.

Maybe DP's pro-Trump right wing posters should engage in less hypocrisy, eh?

If you keep seeing people mention "that", it's because just about every time one of them decides to attack a target on the left (or the entire left), their man is guilty of the same sort of thing.

Does anyone else find it interesting that J.E. Hoover, a closeted gay guy thought someone having extramarital affairs was somehow scandalous?

Now there's a guy whose name should be removed from government buildings. I don't care if he was gay, but for all of his illegal harassment. The MLK FBI file is a good example.

I don't care if he was gay, either. My point was Hoover was living a secret life yet persecuting others doing the same thing. That, to me is the interesting part.

I guess I should consider the times in which J. Edgar Hoover. I lived through much of it, and the anti-communism was strong. He caught quite a few, while damaging a bunch of liberals in the process.

The Truth about J. Edgar Hoover
...
Most importantly, it was Hoover's obsession with "Communist subversion" that drew his complete attention and he was aided and abetted in this by successive post-war administrations and Congresses. He believed communism to be the main threat to the "American way of life." According to Richard Hack, "It didn't matter if there were Mafia out there. They weren't going to bring the government down, they were just making money illegally and there were lots of cops to deal with that."

It was this desire to keep the fight against communism at the top of the political agenda that led to his clash with the first attorney general who saw the Mafia as public enemy No. 1.
...
But, according to most Hoover biographers, the new director quickly turned it into an efficient and uncorrupt policing agency. Hoover abolished political appointments, recruited highly educated agents, instituted centralized fingerprint and statistical files, developed a crime laboratory and founded a highly acclaimed training academy. As investigative reporter and Hoover nemesis Jack Anderson wrote, "J. Edgar Hoover transformed the FBI from a collection of hacks, misfits and courthouse hangers-on into one of the world's most effective and formidable law enforcement organizations. Under his reign, not a single FBI man ever tried to fix a case, defraud the taxpayers or sell out his country."
...
Detractors characterize Hoover as a man who had a lot of prejudices, disliking Jews, African-Americans and "pseudo-liberals"; as a man who saw enemies of the state everywhere and it was his God-given right to protect the nation. To these critics Hoover was, essentially, the major threat to American liberties. They describe him as a man who spent too long in the job, becoming increasingly senile, angry and personally corrupt, misappropriating government time, money, services and equipment for his own ends and for having accepted gratuities from Dallas millionaires Clint Murchison and Sid Richardson.

Critics of Hoover point to the extensive use of illegal investigative techniques including "black bag jobs," illegal break-ins) wiretaps, bugs and illegal mail-openings. Although Hoover often ordered his agents to commit aggressive and sometimes illegal acts against individuals and organizations engaged in legitimate political activities, it was clear to many that some of Hoover's practices must have been, if not condoned, at least allowed by every president he served under. The presidents Hoover served under cannot escape blame.

That reminds me - since Hoover was so connected to who actually was a communist threat - it sure woulda been nice if he'd shut down Joe McCarthy whose blatant fear mongering destroyed many innocent lives.

Hoover was not a hero, in my opinion.

Buddy, I hate to burst your bubble, but the FBI is a lot different nowadays than the group which smeared King. You desperately looking for an excuse to shriek that the FBI is lying because they are playing an important role in exposing anti American activity does not change reality.

Truman wrote him about that, his letter released in Venona files. If memory serves, i'm not finding it

To use the word truth, and Trump in the same sentance is wishful thinking, zero integrity for the great deal maker. I would prefer to do buisness with someone who has at least a smidgen of honesty.
