Papa John Blames the NFL for Hurting Pizza Sales

Pappa John's sucks. They used to be the best. The crust was delicious but now the crust tastes like cardboard and the little pepperchini that comes with it tastes rotten.

Now you can get a delicious large pizza from 7/11 for 5$ and they'll even cook it in the store super crispy in 5 minutes.

Papa Murphy's. Good stuff.

Ny pizza is overrrated. Deep dish is far more appealing. Ny style pizza is too greasy and thin. That kind of pizza appeals to kids. Adults dont eat ny style pizza.

Way to completely dismiss yourself in your own thread by showing you know nothing about pizza.

Just sitting here watching.

Advertisers pull advertising from somebody on the right for whatever reason and those advertisers are held up as models of integrity who righteously refuse to endorse somebody the left hates.

Advertisers pull advertising because they think trashing the National Anthem is not a noble or suitable means of protesting, and the left trashes the advertiser.

All too predictable. :)

Just sitting here thinking.

No matter how much power the right has they they still declare they are under attack and are the true victims.

All too predictable.

Domino's crust at least has a bit of a herbal taste to it.

Papa John's on the other hand is pure crap. It doesnt matter what kind of toppings you order- they all taste the same. The crust is recycled paper.

I used to like papa john's quite a bit many many years ago. Then I moved to Santa Fe and there are no papa johns. Then on a business trip to Denver last year I ordered a Papa Johns pizza and was basically grossed out. I didn't remember it tasting at all like it was now. That they are dropping in sales should be of no surprise.

Which is like saying McDonald's burgers are better than Burger King and Wendy's. Congrats on being king of a ****pile.

I think Wendy's burgers are pretty good. They don't freeze them and you can tell. But the down side is, for some reason Wendy's restaurants always seem to be the worst, most disgusting, unclean places of all the fast food places it seems.

Whats really sad is that you have a collection of people refuting Papa Johns claims not based on whether or not his claim is factual or even that they care about or watch the NFL, but rather because the root of the issue is not Papa Johns or the NFL bu their pet rock 'cause'.

Actually, I've seen lots and lots of people trash the pizza because they don't like John Schnatter's political views, and I'm sure that's what comes into play here, too.

We live in an era where if someone doesn't agree with you politically, they have to disparage and destroy everything about you. You don't just hold an opposing view, no, you're ugly and your dog is ugly and whatever you do for a living, you suck at it, and your kids are ugly and horrible, and your car is stupid and you dress terribly. Because of your views, absolutely everything about you is irredeemable.

Exactly. In the words of one of our posters here...I hate you, therefore, I choose to smell 5 day old sweaty ball sack.

I just looked and can not find the exact quote of what was said on the call re the NFL as I dont pay anyone but DP, a lot of things are going on with BWW not just the NFL problems, but we should get some clarity when the next quarters numbers come out.

Papa John's, an NFL sponsor, had said customers have a negative view of the chain's association with the NFL.

We believe the reason for the sales decline is more complicated than fewer people are watching NFL games," Stifel analysts said in a note about the Papa John's results. "Unlike Domino's and Pizza Hut, Papa John's appears to allocate a greater portion of its national and local advertising spend to NFL games, and it has fewer advertising dollars to allocate to other consumer segments."

Ya, I am no where nears ready to mock Papa Johns claim as so many are doing.

Which is totally no sequitur to my post.

Papa John Schnatter is 100% right. Roger Goodell's weak leadership and his inability to wrangle in these football players need to be addressed.

Advertisers and sponsors will drop out left and right. Not just Papa John's. Viagra and Cialis have already pulled out. McDonald's, Pepsi, Microsoft, Nike, Ford, etc... will soon follow.

The NFL could be on the verge of a strike. Goodell needs to be replaced immediately.

Papa John Shatter is a right-wing shill. He always has been.

Or have the stones to wear the wrong team jersey at a professional sporting event...........

I was gonna bring up that very thing. I also haven't forgotten the C.E.O. complaining about having to pay health insurance.

I don't think Papa John's pizza is that great. The Domino's in my area is pretty darn good.

The best part is that the price increase to pay their insurance would've been 14 cents on top of current prices by the harshest estimation. I'm not surprised to see him whine about the NFL now.

Yup. And the point is that advertising revenues, whether on the radio, in the newspaper, on TV etc., are generated by the traffic that will see or view or listen to that advertising. An ad in the NY Times with roughly 2 million subscribers to the print news and/or digital newspaper, will cost much much more than the same ad in the small town newspaper. An ad during a nationally advertised football game costs a big bunch of money while the ad shown during the highschool football game on the hometown station will cost only a fraction of the national ad.

Papa Johns hasn't changed the recipe or quality of their pizzas in the last couple of months. So they can rightfully figure that a drop off in sales is the result of many fewer people seeing those ads and thinking, hey let's get a Papa John pizza. Or possibly a result of a protest vote against those advertising on a station the people are blackballing until the players come to their senses.

In truth it hadn't registered on me that Papa Johns WAS advertising during pro football games. But then my husband and I are two who are choosing not to watch the games until the players come to their senses and stop offending us, as well as insulting our intelligence, with their silly National Anthem diss.

Feeling sorry for his whiny ass with their concoctions of crap empty carbs and greasy fats is like feeling sorry for a tobacco company with decreasing sales.

I used to work in a pizza shop so I would say I have more expertise about the subject matter than you.

Lousy pizza. Lousy guy.

Working at Papa John's doesnt count. ;)

I did too when I was a teenager. So I guess you don't.

I'm guessing you like to drink orange juice just after brushing your teeth.

The pizza at Papa Johns is good! And the deal is good! $10 for a speciality pizza vs $16-25 at a local pizzeria? The choice is easy.
