SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—Senator Orrin Hatch has privately told allies in Utah that he is planning to retire at the end of his term next year, and if he does, Mitt Romney intends to run for his seat, according to five sources familiar with the situation.

“Nothing has changed since The Atlantic published a carbon copy of this same story in April, likely with the same anonymous sources who were no more informed on the Senator's thinking than they seem to be now,” said Dave Hansen, a spokesperson for Hatch. “Senator Hatch is focused on leading the Senate's efforts to pass historic tax reform, confirming strong judges to courts around the country, and continuing to fight through the gridlock to deliver results for Utah. He has not made a final decision about whether or not to seek reelection, but plans to by the end of the year.” He declined to comment on what Hatch has told allies in private. A spokesperson for Romney declined to comment for this story.

Senator Romney?

Last I heard Romney was aiming for the seat. From 2012 Presidential candidate to potential Secretary of State, to potential Senator. He could go full circle here if the chips fall in his favor. Maybe he was running his anti-Trump long game ever since he didn't get the Secy of State job. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall with Trump and got out of there fast. Knows Utah loves him, and shoots for that. From there who knows what could happen. Especially if impeachment is right around the corner. Romney is definitely angling for the Presidency. He basically already controls Western American Republicans anyway.

No, no way. In this era of anti-establishment GOP nominees, Romney represents everything the new breed despises. I'm sure there are plenty of crazy, homophobic, racist ignorant people to choose from in Utah. Maybe a polygamist cult leader? You're so adorable if you think that's not possible!

Utah may have similar sentiment as Ohio, plus he's got the LDS community to back him but I'm not saying Bannon isn't going to try to counter Romney.

Of course Bannon will counter Romney. Romney wants to lead responsibly, not tear down government - he's everything the current GOP base is against.
