Patriotism is about taking care of each other, yes, but only through charity, volunteerism and private investments. That means being on our own, not dependent on government. Government dependence doesn't build patriotism, it just gives everyone a sense of entitlement that, more often than not, divides us. The only purpose of government is to provide police, courts, and prisons.
Really? Then you really don't want to live in a first-world democracy, do you?
Look at the world around you - there's
lots of democracies out there. Which democracies have the highest standards of living, the best security, the strongest economies?
Without exception, it's the first-world democracies, ALL of which (including America) are socialized to varying extents. ALL first-world democracies have three factors in common: "big government", high effective taxes, and strong regulation. Having all three of those does not guarantee first-world status, but it strongly appears that lacking any of the three guarantees that the nation in question will not be a first-world democracy.
I lived in a third-world democracy for some time, and still have lots of family there. The taxes are relatively very low (and almost unenforceable). There's hardly any social services to speak of. The bureaucracy is very weak, and easy to get around. Most of what the government does is - as you seem to advocate - provide police, courts, and prisons. And you know what? MOST third-world democracies out there are much the same way! In other words, YOUR way does not work. You might want it to work, but the standards of living in all the world's democracies - first-world and third-world - prove you wrong. You are advocating for what does NOT work, and you are protesting against what DOES work.
In other words, regardless of what you might personally think, there is a price of admission to life in a first-world democracy. That price is high effective taxes, big government, strong regulation, and a significant amount of socialization. That, sir, is what is PROVEN to work, and has been working since the end of WWII.
You don't have to take my word for it - all you need do is to go live in a third-world democracy for a while. And I mean that you have to live out among the regular people, and not where the tourists and expats live. Then, if you're half as observant as you believe yourself to be, you'll find out just what happens when taxes are very low, when there are no social services, and when regulations are weak and/or unenforceable.
