I overheard a TV show at work today; what sounded like Democrat politicians giving grand speeches about disaster relief and volunteerism and how they're going to rebuild lost infrastructure, and what sounded like a big audience of retarded suckers just clapping on every queue. Didn't those morons have insurance? What those idiots don't seem to understand is that the government doesn't do charity. Everything they do is paid for with taxes, not donations. It goes to pay contractors and, no doubt, these politicians are getting some serious kickbacks. But the scumbaggery doesn't stop there. State legislatures and local officials are refusing to provide disaster relief to anyone participating in the boycotting of Israel.

Most liberals don't believe in personal responsibility and so the idea of having insurance of any kind is an anathema to them. Furthermore most liberals are unemployed so when they hear about how someone else's tax dollars are going to be used to support liberal sloth and indolence they applaud accordingly. Liberals have never seen a tax they didn't like.

1. Many people who lease don't have renter's insurance.

2. The GOP in considering - not for the first time - to get rid of the federal funding for flood insurance. Insurance companies will not cover floods without that federal funding, which is why the National Flood Insurance Program was started to begin with.

3. If you leave an entire city - hundreds of thousands of people - without assistance, you will have huge spikes in violent crime, businesses will be far more likely to fail, and disease will be rampant. You don't have to take my word for it - just look at what happens to any major city in the world if there is insufficient - or no - assistance. Try spending some time in any third-world metropolis and see what happens when there are literally hundreds of thousands of homeless people. I have. You don't wind up with people "bootstrapping" themselves. Instead, you wind up with people who have no hope, and who turn to crime and prostitution just to put food on the table...if they have a table.

4. Cities are the financial heart of any state in America. Let the city deteriorate by refusing to allow the federal government to help the city get back on its feet, and the effect is felt statewide by the sudden decrease of tax revenue.

All this is why we instituted the Marshall Plan after WWII, for our leaders knew it was FAR better and FAR more humane to keep the people of Germany and Japan fed, that they might be able to stand on their own feet again. They did, and now they're two of the top five economies on the planet. If we hadn't helped kickstart their economies, not only would they have been MUCH more susceptible to the rise of another dictatorship (remember what happened after the Weimar Republic and the devaluation of the Deutschmark), but they would have hated us.

So...yeah, it costs us a lot of taxpayer dollars to help out our people after a major disaster...but those taxpayer dollars are one the very best investments we can make. It's part of what builds the patriotism of America - "we look after our own" - instead of having a national attitude of "tough luck - you're on your own".

Patriotism is about taking care of each other, yes, but only through charity, volunteerism and private investments. That means being on our own, not dependent on government. Government dependence doesn't build patriotism, it just gives everyone a sense of entitlement that, more often than not, divides us. The only purpose of government is to provide police, courts, and prisons.

Really? Then you really don't want to live in a first-world democracy, do you?

Look at the world around you - there's lots of democracies out there. Which democracies have the highest standards of living, the best security, the strongest economies? Without exception, it's the first-world democracies, ALL of which (including America) are socialized to varying extents. ALL first-world democracies have three factors in common: "big government", high effective taxes, and strong regulation. Having all three of those does not guarantee first-world status, but it strongly appears that lacking any of the three guarantees that the nation in question will not be a first-world democracy.

I lived in a third-world democracy for some time, and still have lots of family there. The taxes are relatively very low (and almost unenforceable). There's hardly any social services to speak of. The bureaucracy is very weak, and easy to get around. Most of what the government does is - as you seem to advocate - provide police, courts, and prisons. And you know what? MOST third-world democracies out there are much the same way! In other words, YOUR way does not work. You might want it to work, but the standards of living in all the world's democracies - first-world and third-world - prove you wrong. You are advocating for what does NOT work, and you are protesting against what DOES work.

In other words, regardless of what you might personally think, there is a price of admission to life in a first-world democracy. That price is high effective taxes, big government, strong regulation, and a significant amount of socialization. That, sir, is what is PROVEN to work, and has been working since the end of WWII.

You don't have to take my word for it - all you need do is to go live in a third-world democracy for a while. And I mean that you have to live out among the regular people, and not where the tourists and expats live. Then, if you're half as observant as you believe yourself to be, you'll find out just what happens when taxes are very low, when there are no social services, and when regulations are weak and/or unenforceable.
