When asked about the 4 soldiers recently killed in Niger and why Trump hasn't publicly spoken out about them, Trump:

1. Claimed "Obama and his predecessors didn't call families of fallen soldiers" (a lie); and
2. Says that making 4 to 5 of these calls in one day is tough on him.

He also said he planned to call the parents and families of those who were killed, something he said he has done “traditionally.”
“The toughest calls I have to make are the calls where this happens — soldiers are killed,” Trump said.

“It's a very difficult thing. Now it gets to a point where you make four or five of them in one day, it’s a very, very tough day. For me that’s by far the toughest,” he said.

“So the traditional way, if you look at President Obama and other presidents, most of them, didn't make calls, a lot of them didn't make calls. I like to call when it's appropriate, when I think I'm able to do it,” he continued.

So, when the subject of fallen soldiers comes up at a press conference, Trump uses the opportunity to voice concern about himself and uses the opportunity to slam his predecessors.

What a reprehensible person our president is!

What else do you expect from the Narcissist in Chief?

I don't know. Is it bad to have hope that our president will grow some empathy for someone other than himself?

I salute your optimism, though I don't share it.:peace

I would consider making 4 or 5 "your child is dead" calls in a day pretty rough myself. Rougher for the families obviously, but still a hell of a thing to have on your schedule.

I wasn't aware it had become common practice for Presidents to do this personally. I'm pretty sure it wasn't in 1945... no one person could make all those calls... doubt it was common practice in 1968 either.

It probably is tough to make the calls.

But seriously, how low do you have to be to lie about Obama on this front just to score some points? (Not that lies matter to his supporters).

He's diverting blame for not having done it in 12 days, by falsely accusing Obama and others of what he's done.

I personally know that Trump is lying here about President Obama.

At this point? Yes, it is a bad thing because it will just lead to disappointment.

My point was is that instead of acknowledging the deaths of the brave soldiers and their tragic fate, Trump chose to make his response an attempt to inspire sympathy for himself and scorn upon his predecessors. We know being president is tough. It should be a hard job. Trump proves he's less qualified for the job every day.

He's not making any such calls, though. The way it works is the family receives notification by a visit from a chaplain and another service member.

Trump isn't actually breaking the news to families that 'your child is dead'.

Trump is kind of a dick, yes. This is widely known. He isn't the first dick in the Oval Orfice though.

Ok. I knew that's how they used to do it, and was wondering if that had changed at some point.

I can't imagine a world in which initial death notifications would be done by a phone call from a utterly sociopathic douchenozzle like Trump.

He'd wind up making the call about him and not the fallen child.

Ex-Joint Chiefs chair fires back at Trump: Obama, Bush 'cared deeply' for fallen soldiers

None of the presidents exclusively call the parents of all US KIA. But all presidents have either called and/or solemnly meet the flag-draped caskets at Dover AFB, write personal letters of condolence, invite Gold Star families to the White House, attend soldier burials/ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery etc.

Goddammit. I absolutely detest Trump when he treats American war heroes as sleazy political fodder.

We still hope some of you might. Its not that big a stretch.

Those are fair criticisms. Rather than step up and admit he might have dropped the ball on this, he tried to shift the focus and the blame to his predecessors.
