John McCain, Accepting Award For Public Service, Slams ‘Half-Baked’ Nationalism
“We live in a land made of ideals, not ‘blood and soil.’”

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) passionately defended American idealism and condemned “half-baked, spurious nationalism” that has divided America in a moving acceptance speech Monday evening.

“To fear the world we have organized and led for three-quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain ‘the last best hope of earth’ for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.”

while i do not admire the fellow, those were words well chosen for today's political climate

Globalism vs Nationalism.
A cranky defensive old man with a grudge vs an overly defensive old man with a grudge.
Could be the first ... could be the second ... could be both.

Very Reaganesque with nice boilerplate. I wonder who wrote it and put it on the teleprompter for him to read?

Got to love this love-fest the left is having with McCain. He is the maverick.
Remember the same thing happened in the 2008 election. During the primaries
the media loved him and when the general election stared he was thrown
under the bus. As long as McCain has something bad to say about republicans or
President Trump... it's thumbs up from the left media. What can you say it's just
politics as normal.

McCain's butthurt because President Trump won the election.

Appearing on talk radio station WMAL in Washington DC, Trump was asked about the criticism McCain leveled at him this week, in which he lashed out at “half baked, spurious nationalism” that’s being “cooked up by people who had rather find scapegoats than solve problems.”

“People have to be careful because at some point I fight back,” Trump told WMAL radio host Chris Plante. “You know, I’m being very nice. I’m being very, very nice. But at some point I fight back and it won’t be pretty.”

Trump has regularly attacked McCain after the senator was a key vote against the Republican efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act this past summer.

won't be pretty but it's a good bet it will be petty

I've always respected McCain to some degree. It went down when he ran for POTUS and drank a bit too much of the kool-aid. It's gone up because of the way he has handled POTUS Trump. Mostly, he has opposed Trump without losing his **** and pissing away his credibility, has maintained a certain degree of maturity/class/dignity, and he has not caved to pressure from the administration when he disagrees with them. Sure, it could be an act, but I get the sense he's relatively genuine, and at a point in his life where personal ambition usually takes a back seat to practicality and humanity, especially after the health problems he's dealt with recently.

He is quite right. But it is a pity he didn't persuade our allies of the ideals well enough for them to help uphold them. That he didn't prevent treaties that profit our economic competitors to our severe disadvantage. That this has been so since the 1950s has been visible since the '70s, but nobody stopped it. During the Cold War that was somehow understandable. After 1990 it has no longer been so.

Just once I would like to see Trump say something like "John McCain is entitled to his opinion. We just happen to disagree." And then move on. But Trump takes everything personally. You cant do that in politics.

But as for McCains speech, it just McCain being McCain. Never is he happier than when he is criticizing his fellow republicans.

Juan McCain has always been opposed to whatever he was supposed to stand for or represent.
He is not respected by other POW's and has consistently mishandled policy for the praise of the liberals.

Of the 100 senators roaming around Washington, DC today, there may be only less than 5 with
poorer intellectual credentials than McCain. What was he ranked 790 out of 796 in his graduating class at the Naval Academy. Knowing
both his father & grandfather were Naval Admirals it's very likely he was a legacy appointment who never would have been accepted to
the academy if it were not for those circumstances!

Getting caught up in the keating scandals, attempting to get this country into war with almost every country someone of
his intellect was actually aware constituted a country & being such a buffoon to think a US Senator could be allowed to be on an important Ukranian
committee along with his pal Shakazveilli reveals his entire career showed a real slowness in brain power, even before his new medical problems.

If President Trump was earning the praise of a traitor like McCain, then I'd be worried.
After watching McCain’s performance questioning Comey a while back I wonder if McCain even knows who the President is right now !

The international order since World War II must be preserved. Over the last decade, there have been attacks from the Left and the Right against it, but now we face a particularly unique challenge with our current President’s lack of interest in anything truly dealing with the American interest.

You just brought up McCain's "intellectual credentials" in a feud over Trump?! And you attribute McCain's success to his father?
I will never doubt the theory of the low-information Trump voter again.

Let's get the score here...

McCain = POW war hero
Trump = Draft dodging pansy whose administrastion is under investigation for collusion with Russia

And you are calling McCain a traitor and throwing in with the latter. Go figure. There's nothing more thenthative than trump or a trump supporter when someone speaks and speaker's lips aren't pressed firmly up against trump's ass.

Oh the man-baby in the whitehouse who has to tweet at everything and has NO ability to let anything go?

That was the "overly defensive old man with a grudge".
I shouldn't have to explain what would have been pretty easy to understand for someone not consumed with being "Progressive" or "Conservative" at the expense of objectivity.

Yeah... bitter grudgeholding jerk.

I'm in my 60's, I never in my life thought I'd see Republicans, because of politics, throw a war hero under the bus and spew nothing but hate at him.

It is unbelievable how hateful and vindictive the Republican party has become.

Calling McCain a 'traitor'? My God!

And instead of Vets saying ENOUGH, saying they will not sit by while 1 of their own, a hero is called names, instead many will defend the draft dodger Trump over the POW McCain. Simply because of politics.

Wow, just wow.

And he isn't even aware yet of the issues in NAFTA talks. The US has been making impossible demands, knowing they would be rejected by Mexico and Canada....reports yesterday indicated even the American negotiators are nauseous at what's going on.

The plan is that he will use this forced breakdown to claim "See, I told you NAFTA was no good." He wants the talks ended in time for next fall's elections so he can run on how he's protecting the US from the evil Mexicans and Canadians who are screwing and robbing you blind.

So we add bargaining in bad faith to our one-time friends south of the 49th along with arrogance, lies, corruption and a madman at the helm.

This is going to be the ugliest trade war in history; still smarting from Obama's "we don't want Canadian oil on our land" the Trump administration has imposed illegal tariffs on softwood lumber that will cost 12,000 jobs in one year. The Trump administration has imposed a 300% tariff on Bombardier's new "C" Series medium range aircraft jeopardizing the order of 70 planes...and the US doesn't even have a competing product to the C-series. These are acts of aggression amid deliberately stalled trade talks.

Trump has no decency...he will have no qualms about destroying friendships, look at how he treats his own employees, his own party. he will have no qualms trying to gut the Canadian economy....and Canadians are spoiling for a fight.

To destroy 150 years of what is said to the best friendship on the globe for the sake of image and holding on to some congressional seats is the epitome of arrogance, but it appears to be what Americans want so let's get er done as they say...and get ready for TARP 7 or whatever

Well said. Trump's whole administration is creating nothing and destroying everything. Which is why the whole GOP mantra is how horrible of condition the country was in in 2016. Therefore undoing everything is doing something good. It's asinine.

McCain's success, please eloquently elaborate on what success that might be!

Man, the last time I saw these talking points made against John McCain's character was on a small smattering of liberal websites in 2007-2008.

Well done MAGA crusader!
