Strange lost; Moore won. Both Trump and McConnell wanted Strange (snicker), but there were Moore votes on the other side.

Roy Moore wins Alabama Senate GOP primary runoff, CNN projects - CNNPolitics

Roy Moore, the bombastic evangelical Christian who was twice ousted as Alabama's chief justice, has beaten Sen. Luther Strange in a Republican primary, CNN projected Tuesday.

Moore's win is sending shockwaves through the GOP establishment -- including at the White House, where President Donald Trump had poured his own political capital into helping Strange survive.

Strange days indeed. Moore trouble ahead.

What does this say about Alabama? Who do the Dems have to run against Moore?

THey have the guy.

Though Alabama is a solidly red state, Democrats hope [Doug] Jones, a former federal prosecutor who rose to prominence by leading the government's case against two perpetrators of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, can make the race competitive. Former Vice President Joe Biden plans to visit Alabama to campaign with Jones on October 3.

IMO, he has as much of a chance to win as the Lions have to win the Superbowl...but, ya never know.

Looked up his positions on issues. Generally standard conservative fare, but most troubling his support of tax on consumption instead of income. What is it with some conservatives that makes them want to tax poor people at a higher rate than more affluent folks? Am I missing something? Not to worry, has about as much a chance of passing as Sharia law.

goofy Joe "two shotgun blasts" Biden will go over well in Alabama. They might as well send Chelsea Manning to Fort Rucker to campaign for Democrat

rich folks consume much more stuff than poor folks. Hence they pay higher consumption taxes. this system prevents Democrats from pandering to the many by promising them more goodies paid for by raising the top rates on the rich

Don't understand. Yes rich will pay more dollars, as they do now. Poor will pay a higher percentage of their income. Conservatives tend to represent the more wealthy, hence they don't see the problem.

And we all get goodies. Yet it's still good (better) to be the king, as Mel Brooks said.

life is regressive but the consumption tax plans I have seen always have exemptions for the stuff the poor need most (though often don't buy with their welfare dollars) like wholesome food (not beer or candy or smokes)

And by the way, what are the goodies that the poor get that I don't and that only the rich pay for?

To address the thread title, this is a little inconvenient for Trump, but it's McConnell whose nightmare is just starting.

You seem to have a pretty jaundiced view of the poor. Have worked with them most of my life. They are pretty much as responsible as wealthier folk, despite greater problems and burdens.

not at all, I have a jaundiced view of poverty pimps in office who pretend to care for the poor in order to get wealth and power from governmental office

If he could campaign in his Vette I am sure he would pick up votes in Nascar country

So does this mean Alabama will destroy it's economy like Kansas did under Brownback?

A former prosecutor who helped to prosecute the culprits responsible for the 1963 bombing of a Birmingham church? I consider that a big deal

I'm sure he's a great guy, but this is Alabama.

How are poverty pimps different from military pimps or prison pimps? I used to be a poverty pimp, and worked hard to help people having troubles. Satisfying work, though it didn't pay much. I would have made more as a military contractor. Do you have much experience in the field?

Moore is running for Senate, so Alabama is spared his lunacy for a while. But Brownback's voodoo economics still has currency in parts of the right. Cut taxes and the economy will expand and revenues will increase. And if it doesn't, at least there is no money available for "those people."

i can't exactly celebrate Trump's defeat here...

Moore has the unique history of being removed from the state Supreme Court not once but twice: first, over his refusal to remove a monument to the Ten Commandments on public land despite a federal court; and second, when he refused to enforce federal rulings on marriage equality. He’s also become known over the years for his complaints that the United States has “legalized sodomy” and for suggesting that 9/11 might have been a punishment for turning away from Christianity.

In the weeks before the runoff, the Breitbart universe rallied behind Moore, the anti-establishment candidate with a strong built-in base of support in the state. Over the last week, Steve Bannon, Sarah Palin, Brit Nigel Farage, and Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson all rallied behind Moore.

On Tuesday, Bannon spoke at the victory party for Moore, calling the judge's victory a defeat for big money and Washington elites.

Conservatism. LOL 9/11 punishment from God. Complaining that we legalized sodomy. He wins an election?

But Democrats are the racist party?

We liberals have to unite against these people.
