Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday that it would allow women to drive, overturning a longstanding policy that has become a global symbol of the repression of women in the ultraconservative kingdom.

The change, which will not happen immediately, was announced on state television and in a simultaneous media event in Washington. It highlights the damage that the policy has done to the kingdom’s international reputation and its hopes for a public relations benefit from the reform.

Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, is a Muslim monarchy ruled according to Shariah law. Saudi officials and clerics have provided numerous explanations for the ban over the years.

Some said that it was inappropriate in Saudi culture for women to drive, or that male drivers would not know how to handle women in cars next to them. Others argued that allowing women to drive would lead to promiscuity and the collapse of the Saudi family. One cleric claimed — with no evidence — that driving harmed women’s ovaries.

Really Busy news day ... Donald Trump must be really happy.

I'm glad you're keeping us abreast of the ovary thing or something like that

It's a step in the right direction but they still have a long way to go.

If it wasn't for Ovaries ... you'd be nothing more than a brown stain on the sheets.

Be Happy

Thank God for Ivanka Trump being the impetus for this!

Right, that was it....a person with no office (as cons like to remind us) caused them to change their mind. Unless she IS a private citizen engaged in foreign policy....but that would be against the law.

Up to you. Trump broke the law or you're full of it.

Good grief, do you ever tire of spouting stupid ****? Aren't you ever embarrassed?

I'm not the one giving Ivanka credit. Up to you. Which is it?

No, you're the one dreaming up an idiotic spin on it. Or maybe you're just regurgitating an issued talking point. That's probably more likely.

So it's not because of Ivanka? I can't get to the root of your argument other than insults. It's simple, either someone who shouldn't be making foreign policy is doing so, or she had nothing to do with it.

You're just trying to have it both ways and will resort to name calling and insults if you can't.

Yes, it must be interesting to plant the seeds of enquiry like that.
