NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is such a stickler for adhering to the intricacies of the NFL's league rule book that he infamously waged a years-long, multi million-dollar battle with the New England Patriots trying to prove that balls used in the 2014 AFC championship between the Pats and the Indianapolis Colts were under-inflated.

After a federal vacated Goodell's four-game suspension of Tom Brady, Goodell appealed to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals; by 2016, the Pats appeared to lose their will to keep fighting the case and eventually accepted the penalty (Brady's four game suspension, $1 million fine, and the loss of two draft picks).

The rules are found on pages A62-63 of the league’s game operations manual:
The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.
During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.

The NFL has gone to ****, officially.

"Should" is not a command.

Well it does say they must be on the sidelines, but there is no mandate that everyone stand, this is true.

But hey, we need like the 10th f'n thread on the NFL today, because heaven knows the greatest threat to our Republic currently are some football players taking a knee during the anthem.

Reading, is fundamental.

Yes, this means staying in the locker room can be punished. But punishment isn't mandatory. I mean let's face it, literal murderers continued to have NFL careers.

Kneeling at the sideline is still compliant.

Goodell doesn’t see the reputations threat poised by the Howdy Doodies suddenly complaining to the Peanut Gallery.

If the teams have a revenue crisis next year, I wonder if players will take a pay cut without protesting? Priceless.

Actually, it’s about Trump rallying the base as we come into another shot at Obamacare and tax reform, and the war of nerves between the USA and China vis a vis NoKo.

And, yes, the powdered, pampered, princes of the football field who are a too easy target. Rich and entitled. Welcome to the front page, kids.

Not really, it's all a distraction from those things, yes. It's the thing Trump does best...manufacture drama to use as deflection. This isn't "rallying a base" for some form of political goal, but rather to diminish all those things because none of them are currently fairing well for ol' Trump. But if any one of them does happen to turn out, we'll see the tweets for it, that's for sure.

lol

Talk about fake news, this is all just manufactured outrage and political deception.

Well, now that I've seen the twentieth melt-down thread about the protests I'm definitely convinced that this issue is worth ten poutrages.

Of all the idiotic things to get outraged about! It was maybe one or two people doing this before. The only reason a whole bunch of them are now doing (apparently, musicians, actors, etc., as well, whenever they are on a stage) is because the Melt-Downer In Chief ran his big fat ****ing mouth again.

If it bothers people so much, then turn the TV off and shut up about it.

At the risk of fines and suspensions, the NFL requires players on the field during the anthem, standing

Explain why he acted the same way a year and a half before he became president.

Ya really think he will go against the vast majority of owners who can fire him at a moments notice.

I think it wasn't until 2009 or so that this rule came into effect.

I think the best solution for everybody right now would be to do the anthem while the players are still in the locker room.

I saw an interesting article comparing the current actions of the NFL in its slow walk to embracing the whole social justice warrior culture and MIZZOU. The university has been pummeled over the last 2 years and their athletic department is going broke. As much as we love our sports...it may just be that enough are tired of it that it could bring about a real change in customer numbers.

I've seen for the last 8 years how much Conservatives and Republicans really hated Obama, and because of that hatred they hated America too.

But these past 8 months has surprised even me. They got an (R) in the WH and they've upped that hate even more. Their level of their hatred of Americans, America and it's Constitution is mind boggling.

Conservatives have had a narrative in their heads, for the last 30 years or so, of themselves heroically fighting against the evil tide of liberalism that is attacking all that is good and virtuous. Sure it's simplistic and bombastic, but it works for them. Gets out the vote and makes them feel good about themselves.

Moderator's Warning:
Merged dupe thread.

What I think is hilarious is their total hypocrisy. Not one NFL teams wants Colin Kaepernick. Not one. He has been blacklisted by the NFL and every team due to taking a knee during the national anthem. Then the NFL comes out with a statement claiming that they back the players up in their "freedom of speech" (even though it goes against the official rulebook which they enforce with an iron hammer (accept for that one rule)). Yeah right. What gutless two faced cowardly bastards.

Ha less to do with his Knee crap and more to do with his abilities and baggage. The abilities are less and the baggage is more.
