President Donald Trump accused athletes on Friday of disrespecting the American flag by silently protesting, but taking a knee isn’t covered in the U.S. Flag Code’s respect section.

On June 14, 1923, or Flag Day, a federal code was put in place that would serve as a guideline for how to handle the American flag. There are several sections in the code about proper national anthem conduct, how to display the flag, and yes, even how to respect the flag.

The code does state that everyone should stand at attention facing the flag during the national anthem, but standing or kneeling isn’t actually covered in the respect portion of the code.

Here are some things that Americans do on a daily basis, however, that are disrespectful:

RTFA for everyday examples of disrespecting the flag....

Doesn't "standing, facing the flag" cover "standing or kneeling?" I'm confused?

PS. WTFITA?

Great point. One section appears to be national anthem code and the other section general flag code.

No flag means anything to me, I was abused of that nonsense before I ever exited grade school.

There's only 1 flag that matters anyways

That's flag code, and while it's a very good idea to observe it in respect of the flag, you can't really compare someone who loves the flag, but doesn't know the code, to someone who purposefully makes a public display of disrespecting the flag.

Apples and oranges.

John Trudell knew a thing or two about how the power structure could come roast your entire family if you burned a flag, 'course he was a figure who had an ability to unify folks across racial and socio/economic lines. Same with Fred Hampton. Both these figures terrified the power structure and all they ever did was talk. Their ideas and people listening, hearing the ideas was the threat.

Perhaps true of Trudell, but the Panthers went far out of their way to provide shows of force, and their talk made it clear they would respond with force if oppressed.

Hampton may have technically been a man of relative peace in how he conducted his person, but his organization as a whole promoted forceful resistance and was indeed a response to Dr. King's peaceful resistance. Let's face it, the Blackstone Rangers were a Southside street gang! :doh

The Black Panther Party For Self Defense was formed in Oakland, CA as a direct result of unquestioned police violence against an entire community. Hampton was working with poor disenfranchised whites as well and building coalitions to challenge economic issues.

Her was gang murdered by the power of the state.

What has this cut & paste snippet got to do with my post, or the inaccuracy of your post?

How about you show some relevancy with your post? Because if it's not cut & paste, it's hollow irrelevant drivel proving nothing.

You didn't even get Fred's gender right.

Sure mac, whatever you say, you got the point and you're uncomfortable with it.

You are falling way below my bar for acceptable debate quality, I will give you that.

Comon buddy, bring me back to my comfort zone!

The flag of a "nation" which could barely beat Mexico and now spends its days hyperventilating about US Special Forces and receiving aid from Putin? No, I'd say that that flag hardly matters at all.

*They would respond with force if opposed.

The Black Panthers really were a rather thuggish group at best--- a sort of black answer to the Klan, in many ways--- and just like the Klan some lionize them for no good reason.

Had they gotten their way it's likely the civil rights movement would have been set back decades.

And they proceeded to become a threat to that same community as well as to the cause of civil rights across the country.

I take it we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for you to volunteer to help rebuild Houston.

While Hampton impressed many of the people with whom he came into contact as an effective leader and talented communicator, those very qualities marked him as a major threat in the eyes of the FBI. Hence, the bureau began keeping close tabs on his activities. Subsequent investigations have shown that FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover was determined to prevent the formation of a cohesive Black movement in the United States. Hoover saw the Panthers, Young Patriots, Young Lords, and similar radical coalitions forged by Hampton in Chicago as a frightening steppingstone toward the creation of such a revolutionary body that could, in its strength, cause a radical change in the U.S. government.[9][citation needed] The FBI opened a file on Hampton in 1967. Hampton's mother's phone was tapped in February 1968, and Hampton was placed on the Bureau's "Agitator Index" as a "key militant leader" by May.[6] In late 1968, the Racial Matters squad of the FBI's Chicago field office recruited an individual named William O'Neal, who had recently been arrested twice, for interstate car theft and impersonating a federal officer. In exchange for having his felony charges dropped and a monthly stipend, O'Neal apparently agreed to infiltrate the BPP as a counterintelligence operative.[10] He joined the Party and quickly rose in the organization, becoming Director of Chapter security and Hampton's bodyguard.[9] In 1969, the FBI special agent in San Francisco wrote Hoover that the agent's investigation of the BPP revealed that in his city, at least, the Panthers were primarily feeding breakfast to children. Hoover fired back a memo implying that the career prospects of the agent were directly related to his supplying evidence to support Hoover's view that the BPP was "a violence-prone organization seeking to overthrow the Government by revolutionary means".[11]

You stole your screen name from a guy who understands the manufacture of consent. Odd that.

Gee that depends buddy. Houston "Texas", or Houston the part of the United States?

Swallow and follow my friend.

Just like people who point out that the police are murdering unarmed citizens in the streets are really out of line with that stuff.
