NFL Sunday 24SEP17

He should have taken his own advice when he said a president (Obama) should stay out of comments on sports actions when there was a controversy over the name Redskins.

Fair enough. Although no group has been as poorly treated as Native Americans. But Obama didn't call for a boycott of the Redskins.

I agree that native Americans have been treated poorly but so have African Americans. Trump does not get why they are taking a knee and I don't think he ever will, so he should practice what he preaches and stay out of the controversy.

I'm glad players in the NFL kneeled to protest the astronomical out of wedlock birthrate in the black community and the high incidence of arrests and incidents of domestic abuse by its players.

What? Oh its about Trump? Never mind then.

I'll respect the right to take a knee but I'll never respect the jackasses that choose to do so. The fans come to see a great American game and these idiots choose to disrespect the nation that gives them the opportunity to do what they do.

In America we used to earn respect by helping others, helping our families, helping our communities and setting an example to the rest of the world about what could be achieved when we put freedom first. These spoiled brats are all about "respect for me but none for thee" and they can all kiss my ass.
Well, there's not much I can argue with there.

We have to "respect their right", but that doesn't mean we have to "respect them" or "their actions". There is a difference.

You actually don't have the right to do anything under the guise of private employment, they are allowed to do this because the NFL allows it. The US constitution places restriction on government. people seem to forget this.

As we are seeing however, when these primadonna multi million dollar players disrespect what people hold dear, they tend to start walking, which is what we are seeing with low attendance, and poor ratings.

I recall players not being able to wear a pair of patriot cleats commemorating the victims of 9/11 in which the cleats were to be auctioned off to benefit the families.

I also recall an incident where the Dallas Cowboys requested permission to wear special decals on their helmets to commemorate all the fallen police officers during the terrorist attack. That was denied too.

Now both those incidents were acts of free speech yet they get shot down and taking a knee during the National Anthem doesn't.

Those would have been on the field during the game. Taking a knee is before the game, not on the playing field

Alejandro Villanueva, American by birth to Spanish parents stationed in the US, West Point graduate and Army Ranger. Served three tours in Afghanistan and received the Bronze Star.

The only player on the Pittsburgh Steelers to so much as take the field during the National Anthem.

THAT is a statement.

#1 selling jersey right now, the left, the media, and the NFL are so misreading the clear message it's customers are sending.

To me this shows that Mike Tomlin doesn't have everyone on the same page.

To me it's about a veteran who served 3 tours deciding it was more important to stand for what he believes in and fought for over groupthink and peer pressure. I am sure he know people who never came back, to ask him not to do something like this would be abhorrent, disrespectful, and showing prodigious hubris of the coach and owners.

He's got the #1 selling jersey after this. The message by the nfl's customer base is clear.

The media could care less about the public's message because, as far as they are concerned, they are the ones who get to dictate the message. If they get contrary feedback it isn't because they are wrong, it's because everyone else is too stupid or too racist or too politically biased to see the "right" message.

That picture Luther posted of Villanueva says it all. You have a lot of skin colors in that picture and as far as you look back they are standing with their hats off and their hands over their hearts.

exactly. it's a hyped protest that's alienating thier customer base which is going to bite them in the ass.

I suspect most players of color will be taking a knee. And, that is great. Dotard always does us this service. Repeal and replace led to three failed votes to repeal and replace. Build the wall leads to no wall being built. Travel ban results in no travel ban. And, stop this kneeling thing will probably end up with almost everyone taking a knee.

Now you're calling Trump Dotard? It's just hilarious how you guys on the left want to align yourself with the Antifa and your new hero Kim Jong-un.

Dotard was the best take down remark of the year so far. Credit where it's due.

Once again, our idiot in chief manages to divide. Good to see so many players standing up against this fool.

You got that backwards.

The NFL has been infiltrated by leftists and is now controlled by them. And what do leftists do when they are in charge of something? They destroy. And that's exactly what is happening to the NFL.

Don't get me wrong about this, the left does a better job at wrecking things than the Marine Corp. I hope everyone of those leftists take a knee.

Hyperbolic bilge.

Hyperbolic bilge.

Nope. The NFL started politicizing a long time ago. Its essentially controlled by a bunch of leftists. And it is suffering as a result. Nice job. Keep up the good work. :)

Trump hit the nail right on the head with this one. The NFL showed their true colors this week and are in a more
precarious position than ever before.

'Q7: Last week, Donald Trump said NFL players should stand and be respectful during the national anthem. Do you think
NFL players should stand and be respectful during the national anthem?

Yes: 64%
No: 25%
Unsure: 11%

Q8: On Sunday, a number of NFL players knelt during the national anthem in protest of Donald Trump’s statements,
including players from your favorite team. Does this make you more likely or less likely to watch your favorite team’s games in the future?

More likely: 30%
Less likely: 50%
No difference: 20%

That two-question sequence is devastating for the NFL. Within the space of those questions, the poll establishes that a significant
majority of the American people agree with what Trump said in Alabama on Friday night. Moreover, it also shows that the NFL’s
response to President Trump was a complete failure.

This crystallizes, as Daniel Flynn noted on the sports page a few days ago, just how well Donald Trump has chosen his enemies.
In picking a fight with the NFL, headed-up by Roger Goodell, Trump pits himself against people that the public essentially loathes.
Making it next to impossible for him to come out the loser in any kind of PR conflict.

As for the popularity of the player protests themselves? That doesn’t look good for the NFL either:

Q4: Now, just thinking about this year, have you watched more football or less football compared to previous years?

More football: 19% [GO TO Q6]
Less football: 51% [GO TO Q5]
About the same: 30% [GO TO Q6]

Q5: Why would you say you are watching less football this year?

Players using the NFL as a stage for their political views: 69%
New rules that reduce physical contact: 5%
There are too many games during the week: 6%
Games last too long: 2%
Pace of play is too slow: 2%
Something else: 12%
Unsure: 4%'

Yet the Trump haters consider this a victory against Trump. Only shows how out of touch
a segment of society can be.

Nope. The NFL started politicizing a long time ago. Its essentially controlled by a bunch of leftists. And it is suffering as a result. Nice job. Keep up the good work. :)

"leftists" blah blah blah

I'm willing to go out on a limb and predict a significant increase in NFL viewership on the TV this week end due to Trumps comments Friday in Alabama.

This falls more political than off topic, I think....

Looks like The Experts in Vegas are thinking that same way ... but what do they know over a Trump Supporter?

Make a Bet and see who comes out the Winner.

THAT is a statement.

His statement about people, such as you, misconstruing what happened:

Al, today you had the best-selling jersey in the league. You're a guy who doesn't enjoy -- you don't like this attention for this sort of stuff -- so how does it feel? People are treating you because of those pictures today, they're treating you as some sort of hero who stood up to whatever. They sort of take or interpret it for another thing. What would you say to people who are trying to put you up there?

AV: It's completely wrong, and every single time I see that picture of me standing by myself I feel embarrassed to a degree, because like I said, unintentionally I left my teammates behind. It wasn't me stepping forward. I never planned to boycott the plan that the Steelers came up with. I just thought that there would be some middle ground where I could stay in the tunnel, nobody would see me, and then afterward I just wouldn't talk to the media, like I do all the time. I'll avoid you guys, I'll shower, bring my clothes in, never address you guys and two weeks later you guys will be talking about something else.

His statement, regarding so-called disrespect of the flag:

So out of all these players in the NFL who are taking a knee, I don't think as a veteran I take offense. In a big picture where there's customized different thing, nobody thinks when you're taking a knee you're offending the flag. And they're saying it. And I don't think that anybody that standing for the flag is not respecting the fact that there is a lot of unjustices and racial divide in our country. So we're essentially talking about two completely different things.

But the problem is that it's interpreted as disrespectful to the flag, and so at the end of the day people have to live with those consequences.

Colin Kaepernick did, and there's a lot that can be said about his adventure of starting this process. But I take no offense, I don't think veterans at the end of the day take offense, they actually signed up and fought so that somebody could take a knee and protest peacefully for whatever it is their hearts desire.
