Unfortunately for you, the statement Hill made was true. It took every last one of Trump's POW hating, Confederate worshipping cultists to ensure he beat one of the least popular presidential candidates ever. Congrats.

Frankly, I don't see why it didn't. The current working hypothesis is that Trump cultists place partisan hackery as far more important than anything else, including, you know, the person in question attacking POWs when he himself dodged the draft and referred to avoiding STDs as "his Vietnam".

Who was it in the public that let him slide?

Was it the same people letting Trump slide, or a different group?
