Why do conservatives care if an NFL player salutes the flag?

The American flag stands for freedom. It's seems irrational to then force people through social pressure or shame to salute the flag. So what some NFL players kneel as a sign of protest? You don't have to agree with their protest. Be thankful we live in a country where they are free to do so.

This obsession with flags is the kind of thing you find in fascist dictatorships. It should be totally voluntary.

I watch football for the game. I don't care about the political opinions of a bunch of jocks.

Texas teen claims he was suspended for refusing to say Pledge of Allegiance

A Texas teen was reportedly suspended from school for refusing to stand up and pledge his allegiance to the flag.

Mason Michalec, a sophomore at Needville High School, claims he’s taken a pledge not to say the Pledge.

“I’ve basically said it from the time I was in kindergarten to earlier this year and that’s when I decided I was done saying it,” he told KHOU.

The 15-year-old says he loves his country, but he doesn’t agree with how politicians are running it.

Yep, Texas.

Yep, Texas.

Why do leftists have to inject politics into everything they do? Some of us would just like to watch a football game.

Then watch it. What's the problem?

Faux outrage. We live in a country where dissent is allowed. Dissent is the most American thing there is. Asking people to be slavishly devoted to saluting a flag or a pledge is the kind of thing they do in N. Korea. Freedom is a great thing...even if you don't agree with it.

Exactly!

I'm seeing all these cry babies vowing to never watch the NFL again. Why? Because some NFL players are protesting police brutality? You don't have to agree with them.

We have a long history of athletes who protested. Muhammad Ali refused to fight in Vietnam. That's a much bigger deal than not standing up for the anthem.

Politics was inserted into NFL games when they started parading uniformed troops during the national anthem.

It's not just conservatives I've seen some pretty liberal folks upset over people not standing.

As a fan I don't really care, as a teammate I could see how the uproar over the action could impact the locker room so then I can see voicing an opinion.

Also not sure why any NFL would think someone gave a flip about any message he wanted to make. STFU and play football I tune in for that. Don't care what their opinions on politics are

I notice that it's overwhelmingly conservatives who say things like, "anti-American." Yet they insist that everyone must stand for the anthem. They don't see the irony.

Funny thing about freedom: Americans love freedom, as long as you limit yourself to the choices they approve of.

It's also generally fine for conservatives to criticize society and their fellow Americans. But when someone who isn't "one of them" criticizes the nation or the government, they are unpatriotic.

Black players who criticize structural racism are not One Of Them, so they lose their minds over it. If a player made a gesture before each game to honor soldiers, they'd be all over it.

I.e. it's mostly tribalism. Anyone who thinks this is new hasn't been paying attention.

That being said, most people prefer sports to be apolitical. I don't think that is a uniquely American phenomenon either.

Texas, **** yeah!

I would say that's because of a bias you may have. Just because you don't notice it doesn't mean it's not happening. I see equally people from both sides using the unAmerican line followed up by hypocritical ironic statements

What makes that political? Are such displays-pro conservative or anti-liberal?

Some people in America want to define freedom by what they personally like and dislike.

Freedom isn't that way.

They can ****ing grab their crotch during the anthem if they want but I sure as hell don't have to applaud or support that (just as you're free to applaud it), and teams also have the right to not to employ him. Kaeperdick wants to offend, fine, but then he can't complain when people think he's a self entitled diva basically biting the hand that feeds him.

Leave Colin alone!!! :baby2

Of course they don't.

Dissent is the most American thing we have.

I think all confederate statues should be replaced by a statue of Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem :)

That's why I won't be watching.

Because the very foundation of modern social conservatism is utterly cosmetic. It's about image and appearance, and empty gestures to meaningless, manufacturered outrage, with a healthy dose of hatred of individual liberty thrown in for good measure.
