The author Cunningham is making something other than what was actually said by Secy. of Defense and Ret. Gen. Mattis. Mattis has a responsibility to clearly and bluntly inform the North Korean state of the consequences of taking any action which the USA may interpret as a hostile military action. His job is not to conduct foreign diplomacy and to speak in diplomatic niceties. His job is to deliver threats and to perhaps enforce those threats if North Korea does not heed them. The voice of diplomacy should be heard from the State Department but President Trump has all but gutted that department and Secy. Both North Korea and the USA (and her allies) are responsible for this stand-off. President Kim is behaving recklessly and is by far the most responsible for this brinkmanship. President Trump is arguably derelict in his duties by refusing to fulfill his responsibilities to ensure that all the organs of the US Government are brought to bear on this crisis. Trump is also at fault for recklessly delegating the important decision making responsibilities in military matters to uniformed officers instead of protecting the principle of civilian control of the military by directing them and allowing them to make policy decisions on their own.

So while I sympathize with some of the points which Mr. Cunningham makes in his Op. Ed. piece it is neither a compellingly persuasive argument nor a good source for historical facts presented. We need better and more balanced reportage of this crisis rather than American politicos howling at each other from opposite poles of the political spectrum. The same is true for the diplomats and politicians who should be working hard to resolve this crisis. For this reason there is indeed a divorce from reality at work in Washington just as there is one in Pyongyang.
