A high school in Iowa has disciplined some of its students after a recent photo was posted online of five young men dressed in Ku Klux Klan hoods burning a cross.

In addition to the KKK hoods and the burning cross, the photo also featured one young male holding a rifle, and another holding a Confederate flag.

The Omaha World Herald reports that students at Creston Community High School were disciplined for the photo but would not explain what discipline the students received.

The school told KMALand that the people in the photo are Creston students.

This is embarrassing for everyone,” school principal Bill Messerole told the Omaha World Herald. “This is not a good reflection of Creston High School. This is not a reflection of our community.”

hehe I posted this picture in your thread about people becoming more open. I remember one time awhile ago, I posted on here about the prejudice I encounter in small towns in Iowa and there were a couple defensive people who couldn't believe good ole country folk would act like that. Even with this picture they would still deny it.

It sounds as if they were disciplined. The school condemned what they did.

What more should happen?

The photo was staged for Facebook or some other social networking site. Id say this phenom shares part of the blame. And so do the parents that don't monitor their kids' behavior and computer use. Kids are always into something...

Kids are always into something, but dancing around a burning cross, with a riffle and white bed-sheets over their head can say only one thing about them. ;)

They were rehearsing for Halloween?

Edit.., In my opinion, these are things that kids do that require a grounding, PERHAPS. And a few thousand-word essay on the evils perpetrated in the name of the KKK. They're kids. Their brains aren't even on straight yet.

Make you wonder if they have any Teenage Women in Iowa :2razz:

... when I was their age, I wasn't boogieing in a field with other Boys.

Re: Iowa high school tight-lipped after armed students caught burning a cross in KKK

What you probably have here is 5 kids that thought what they were doing was funny. The picture doesn't scream "hate". It screams "kids trolling all the social media insanity over white nationalism".

Re: Iowa high school tight-lipped after armed students caught burning a cross in KKK

I am curious as to why they were disciplined by the school. If they were doing this in their own time then what jurisdiction does the school have to punish them?

That said I agree with Lutherf. I get the sense it was more of a fun/troll attempt rather than one of hate.

So ... let me understand this.

Your rational from seeing this is; you think these are 5 kids who may have thought what they were doing was funny?

They're just innocent little boys out for some fun ...

Yea ... that's it. Can I use that reasoning or is that a privilege.

It isn't "insanity" in the slightest. White nationalists have, over and over and over again, proven to be a serious domestic terrorist threat.

And yes, you'd have to live under a rock to not know that hatred is pretty much the KKK's main selling point.

I dont know if it was a dumb innocent act at an attempt at being funny or not. Im just not ruling out that possibility. As we know teens dont always use the best judgment. A school acquaintance of mine in the 1980's dressed up as a middle eastern terrorist equipped with a toy rife for Halloween and thought it was just the funniest thing ever.

Wow ... confirms everything I've been saying.

Thanks

Yeah. They were probably mugging for their friends and never suspected that it would become a public spectacle.

Well, you'd actually have to understand empathy to understand what Baralis and I are saying so I can understand your disbelief.

It is insanity. The threat of the KKK taking over the country, or even having a significant impact on the country, is non-existent. Yeah, hate groups exist but they have no political power and are generally scorned by any group that does hold political power.

No, it's not "insanity" in the slightest. ISIS has no chance of taking over the country either. Should we just ignore its adherents in the US? And before you try and pretend like the KKK isn't a similar group......they've been in the "church bombing" and "burning people alive" business long before ISIS was around.

Increasingly that doesn't seem to be true.

They made a picture. They didn't threaten anyone.

Look, if this picture had been taken and sent to all the black kids in school that would indicate something different but it wasn't. The accounts I've read indicate that it was posted for consumption by their friends. This wasn't a threat.
