Iowa high school tight-lipped after armed students caught burning a cross in KKK hood

Re: Iowa high school tight-lipped after armed students caught burning a cross in KKK

You are full of ****. If poverty has nothing to do with murder, why are the poorest parts of town the most dangerous?

Crime and poverty are intricately linked. Dozens of studies over the past decades have focused on why it happens and how to end the vicious cycle.

Race is less important in the equation than is poverty. Not only are the poor more likely to take part in crime, they're more likely to be victims of crime. Unfortunately, many of the "fixes" have exacerbated the problem, but it's something that we need to pay close attention to -- and keep trying to figure out how to eradicate.

Oh Come On man ... this is the year 2017.

If you're over the age of 14 and you don't know the connotation and the feeling that invoke burning a cross and wearing White Pointed Hats? Then why don't they take their naive ass for a good laugh in a Black Neighborhood? I'll tell you why, because they know exactly what they are doing, and they know they have people like you to cover for them.

Of course they're not going to go into a black neighborhood and pull that stunt. Just as black gangbangers aren't going to do drive-by's in ritzy white neighborhoods. They're all going to stay where they feel comfortable.

It's just the nature of the beast.

These kids wanted to get attention and get folks riled up. From some of the posts I've seen here -- it looks as if they were successful.

They should have been ignored.

I never denied that they COULD be racist, I just pointed out that there is more than one conclusion that can be drawn from that picture. You WANT it to be racism. I want to know the truth. Maybe they are racists, but maybe they're just dumbasses.

That's the most likely scenario, given the facts. They're dumb asses.

If one of my boys had been involved in a stunt like that, he'd be grounded, no phone, no video games, no social media, only leave the house to go to school. His time would be spent writing a research paper on the history of the Klan complete with references. This sort of thing is serious, but it is not criminal. These boys need adult supervision and guidance.

Our country has become an open sewer; but Antifa is a problem?

What did they do that harmed anyone?

Re: Iowa high school tight-lipped after armed students caught burning a cross in KKK

What did they do that constitutes terrorism? Or, putting them on a no-fly list?

Unless I'm wrong, they didn't actually do anything illegal. Repulsive, yes -- illegal, no. What they did was offensive, but since when do we have a right not to be offended.
At least some lawyers agree with you. [/QUOTE] Burning cross in Iowa: Not a crime, unless rights are violated
School leaders' decision to discipline Creston High School students who were pictured wearing Ku Klux Klan-type hoods beside what appears to be a burning cross may be overreaching, said Drake University Law Professor Mark Kende.

While the picture may be offensive, “this is a significant free speech issue,” said Kende, who specializes in constitutional law. “If they’re off school grounds and they’re doing it in their free time and they’re not targeting someone in school … then this is a form of expressive speech.”

I disagree strongly. Saying nothing, doing nothing just leads to more hate-inspired actions until there is a violent response - at which point someone will place all the blame on the ones who responded. We will get to read one more time - "See, I told you those thugs (people of colour) were subhuman beasts and you wouldn't listen. Time to get rid of them." All the while ignoring those who instigated the problems.

The family of one of the boys appears to be acting as you mention.
on Friday, Jamie and Megan Travis, of Creston, submitted a statement to the Creston News Advertiser newspaper, identifying their son as one of the people in the offensive photo.

The Travis family apologized for their son's actions and said they support the school administration's disciplinary decisions, including removing their son from the football team.

What has not been mentioned in this thread, is the fact that the five boys were all first-string players on the school's football team.

A high school in Iowa has disciplined some of its students after a recent photo was posted online of five young men dressed in Ku Klux Klan hoods burning a cross.

In addition to the KKK hoods and the burning cross, the photo also featured one young male holding a rifle, and another holding a Confederate flag.

The Omaha World Herald reports that students at Creston Community High School were disciplined for the photo but would not explain what discipline the students received.

The school told KMALand that the people in the photo are Creston students.

This is embarrassing for everyone,” school principal Bill Messerole told the Omaha World Herald. “This is not a good reflection of Creston High School. This is not a reflection of our community.”

WOW

what a classless bunch of dumb-asses right there . . . .

Glad they were punished, i hope this was just some extreme stupidly and ignorance and the parents also seriously punish them

they are minors so also punish them if they broke any laws or ordinances no matter how stupid those rules are. (fire laws/ordinance, rifle laws ordinance) them being minors it wont mean much besides put more fear in them for acting stupid and make them think.

Did they actually harm anyone?
Certainly no more than did those bigots that destroyed the conscious baker, I bet.

You mean then that you want to punish them for acting stupid, though the did no harm? That is as bad as the kkk of old.

Really? So all the laws that do the same, and all the schools and parents that also do the same are just like the KKK?

Punish your kids for bad grades? then your just like the KKK:lamo

well that is easily the most nonsensical, dishonest, retarded, factually unanalogous, anology i have heard to day, thanks!

When someone does something repulsive that doesn't rise to the level of breaking the law, I don't think it's a good idea to give it a lot of attention. Let their parents know - and (hopefully) the parents will step up and condemn the action.

But, by giving this type of thing a lot of media attention -- it's just going to attract more malcontents to mimic it. It's very likely that the recent media coverage of the problems at extremist rallies gave the boys the bright idea to do this in the first place. It's a monkey-see, monkey-do kind of thing. But, because it's a constitutionally protected activity, the best thing to do is the give the boys no attention.

Now, because they got tons of coverage, other kids will see that and think, hey we could do that too.

It's like the nationalists marches -- they've been going on for decades, but no one paid them much attention so their numbers dwindled. Suddenly, thanks to counter-protesters, they're getting attention again and their ranks are swelling.

Nothing happens in a vacuum.

I think their 'visible' numbers are increasing simply because they feel the President and members of his Administration covertly support their words and actions.

Someone taught them that this is OK.

Re: Iowa high school tight-lipped after armed students caught burning a cross in KKK

The photo was staged for Facebook or some other social networking site. Id say this phenom shares part of the blame. And so do the parents that don't monitor their kids' behavior and computer use. Kids are always into something...

True. This looks like 5 kids having a photo op. And nowhere near a school. So why did the school get involved?

At least it's not dickpics.
