Here's a second chance...

Yeah...I forgot to mention the need for more chauffeurs, car washers and such...we can hire the locals to pump gas and go back to the good old days of "Service" stations...check the oil and water, wash windshields...heck yeah, keys to classic cars and limo's

We could make Cuba great again.

We could make Cuba great again.

1) Setup a capitalist society.

2) Build some resorts.

3) Allow foreign purchase of property. Incentivize moving there with money.

4) Don't produce sugar (bad for the land).

5) Export products like cigars, tobacco, and so on.

6) Build an incredibly efficient port in Mariel (deep water port). Incentivize shipping there.

7) Make sure that drugs and other unsavory and destabilizing criminal activity is dealt with swiftly and harshly. Traveling the entire island should be safe for anyone.

8) make sure the banking and tax laws encourage growth and keep money flowing in rather than out. Don't allow foreign markets to take money out of your Financial plumbing.

It would not be that hard but you can't do it on communism. Communism discourages a lot of the known ways to Bring money into your economy. It squanders the money on welfare rather than creating a system where welfare is not necessary for the vast majority. Any programs designed to improve the lives of citizens needs to improve them via giving them positive tax paying jobs and industries that grow your economy.

I am of the personal opinion that Cuba would have made an excellent state had The United States been able to keep control of the government. It would likely be similar to Florida and that it would be a tourist destination as well as a big time ag state.

...for any armchair humanitarians who missed the first efforts...granted, it's not to late to go to Houston.

However, depending on where you live you might look into booking your tickets now and catch a day or two of rest in Florida before helping with...

Hurricane Irma's damage could be the largest ever in the U.S., Barclays predicts

CAT5 this time...looks like, according to some, Irma has the potential of causing even more financial damage than any previous storm in US history...nothing to see here folks just normal weather patterns...

God Bless America
and please hurry

Why would anybody with a brain in their head go to Florida when a cat5 hurricane is on the way?

and all the classic cars, don't forget we keep the keys to those.

You wouldn't want any of them.

It is an island after all and old metal rusts.

Also most of them have Chinese diesel engines in them now.

There are no service stations where you live?

West side and even Middle of the state will be fine. My office isn't even closing. They expect me to drive to work in tropical storm to level 1 hurricane conditions. Greedy assholes. Lol

I hope you have a vehicle that can handle it.

There are a lot of convertibles in Florida and they don't do well in heavy winds.

In the context of humanitarian efforts as I was referring to...perhaps to be prepared to offer aid more quickly assisting those who say, just lost everything

Me, I'd love to ride one out...to experience the eye of the storm would be awesome...probably as awesome as a full eclipse...granted a bit rougher adventure

Or maybe it would have been nice to fly out and be with my granddaughter who lives in Florida
...nowhere near the eye but I'll bet she will be in for some memorable moments
prolly be needing a helping hand along with her neighbors

I find it sad that you challenge the IQ of those who risk their lives to help others.

The good old days?

Pretty much all self serve...and a buck or buck and a half for air and/or water...even if you pay the extra for gas where you might get a bit of help, they don't appear to do much...not like the good old days

I don't know how old you are but I'm coming on 67 which puts me in a minority on this forum.

When you go buy gas what type of service do you get?

Do they wash your windshield, check your oil, radiator, fan belts, check your tires air pressure, etcetera???

No, they didn't do all of that every time...it was more like asking if you wanted a check under the hood while washing your windshield

Not today, thanks Goober.

At least Oregon saved some jobs by requiring pumping attendants which has it's drawbacks as well.

Perhaps you were born in 1966? If so, we are nearly a generation apart in many ways.

If you are 66 years old I doubt you would have asked...most understand to some degree, where I'm coming from...just guessin'

True dat. I drive a 4x4 pickup. My tires aren't that aggressive, but I also have been driving in sand and mud for a LONG time lol. Wind will suck if it throws something. But I got insurance and Florida has free windshield deductibles lol.

I have lived in Oregon and now live in Mexico where in both locations all service stations do what you ask them to do.

I just don't want anybody touching my oil stick or anything else they can screw up.

A clean windshield is nice though.

That's great. A little unexpected as I would expect in an area that gets a lot of damaged windshields, they would charge what they could, and you would have to pay it.

Here in Mexico because the insurance companies know that parts are going to be stolen off of your car, they don't even offer coverage for that.

I am talking about things like the mirrors on the 2000s Chevy pick ups that just clip out. Stupid design that kept a lot of thieves in business. My buddy had to buy back his own mirror more than once.

I understand...good thing back then it was much easier to find the dipstick and people were more qualified...I can't speak to Mexico...perhaps service is better there, in America I prefer many things of the past...nothing more than fond memories in many cases...we didn't have to worry that someone would steal the dipstick.

Yea. State of Florida law. 3 other states in the United States have a 0 deductible law on windshields. I think they did it here because of the heat and temperature changes (plus rain). It is a lot safer to replace the windshield then to pay for leak and interior damage due to rain.

All of my cars are from 1975 and back so it is easier to find as there was no smog equipment in Mexico until 1981.

When I lived in Oregon, I had mostly new cars at the time.

Every car I had got a broken window from the salt used on the snow then the big rigs kicking it up.

They don't have that law, or at least they didn't at the time.

Yea. I don't know. I just know Florida has it lol. And it is very convenient.

I know what you mean...I much prefer working on my '68 VW dune buggy or '71 Wagoneer, the '85 Dodge Van isn't too bad...but, I looked two or three times to find the automatic tranny dipstick on our '04 Grand Am...finally researched and discovered they don't even have one...blew me away...I don't even like popping the hood on that sucker.

When it comes to vehicles I definitely prefer "the good old days"...carry a half inch wrench, a nine sixteenth and a 5/8, a hammer, bailing wire and duct tape...good to go.

Things are looking a bit different on predicted storm path in the last 24 hours...the decision might be taken out of the hands of your employer...good luck.

It was. People were threatening lawsuits from one of our more coastal locations actually. They closed us. Which is great. I can leave and head west.
