Does the world respect America more now that Trump is President?

It's probably a good thing that they don't get to vote in our elections.

I don't think Trump meant a popularity contest when he said they'd respect us.

Then how are you defining resepect in this context?

If "respect" means "fear," then no doubt the rest of the world has more fear of the US now that we've elected a loose cannon and given him the nuclear codes.

Still think the world respects Obama more then Trump at this point.

Also Trump's bravdo is creating red lines that are far more dangerous then anything Obama has done, with North Korea he is in danger of setting a red line where he either loses face or starts a devastating war.

The problem with Trump is he wants the US to be aggressive all the time, in all things and doing that all the time limits your options.

I can only hope the world can distinguish the difference between America and trump. The problem is much of the world equates a country with its ruler and the west doesnt work that way. the only saving grace is trump will be gone at some point.

You are more likely to respect someone if you like them, how often do you respect people who you think acts disrepectful towards you?

Often when you don't like someone and disapprove of their behaviour, you don't respect them.

If Trump screws over Canada, Mexico, Germany, etc in one sided trade deals, those countries will not respect the US for screwing them over.
You can respect and like someone but liking them is not a requisist to respecting them. Either way, I would perfer the world liked us, but im ulimately indifferent to it. I judge Trump based on his ability to serve Americas best interests. He was elected to be Americas president, not the worlds.

Okay, one how are defining respect in this context?

Because this line between popularity and respect comes off as a semantics game. How do you know that a country respects the US more, if Trump is making the US less popular in that country?

Two, what is Trump actually doing to increase respect for the US in other countries?

Three, if you don't care what other countries think of the US, why is this respect thing an issue at all?

Four, are US interests served if more countries hold a dim view of the US and thus are less likely to go out of their way to help them?

Your asking good questions:

1) I dont know if a country respects us more or less based soley on our popularity with them. This is why I stated that the poll you cited was not evidence of respect.

2) I respect people who take prinicipled and ethical positions and have the strength and conviction to see them through. Trump has made several pledges on the world stage that he seems to be folling through on. He stood up to N. Korea, He is trying to control illegal immigration, and he has pulled out of the Paris accord. He is doing what he says he believes is the right thing to do, regardless of if it makes him popular or not.

3) Its important that our neighbors can depend on us keeping our promises that we make to them as we expect them to us. Thats an element of respect.

4) Others having a favorable view of us can benefit us in our negotiations but it isnt necessary.

I think that is more correct. It is the position of the president of the united states that is been ridiculed by the world, not america per se. America was already great before he came along. The problem is that trump equates great with getting everything his own way. So now america is just a laughing stock instead of great.

Does the world respect America more now that Trump is President?

The world still respects America and her people. Trump however is a laughingstock of friends and foes alike.

To date, no. America's image abroad has been tarnished by President Trump's outbursts and tweet-storms. He and by extension his country are held in lower regard since his election. President Trump's mercurial and impulsive nature have made the world more suspicious and nervous about American global power and such worries are translating into an international movement to encircle the USA in order to weaken an America controlled by such a narcissistic, self-absorbed, corrupted, and fundamentally authoritarian leader as President Trump. This is not a good time for Amerca abroad.

Cheers.
Evilroddy.

To me, the global community clearly is repugnant of Trump. What matters is, what do we think? Do we get their repugnance? And care? Apparently, 1/3 of us support Trump's foreign policy. Most of the remaining are a bunch of ******s. Do the math.

Trump has said that now that he is President, other countries will respect America more then when Obama was President, but I am not sure that is the case:

What is Trump doing to make the world respect America more? And if Trump's supporters don't care what the rest of the world thinks about America, why is this an issue at all?

To answer the question in your thread title, "Does the world respect America more now that Trump is President?", I'd have to say some of the world does...some of the world doesn't.

I'd also say that some of the world has probably changed their tune about believing that the US is a foreign relations push-over. Whether that makes them "respect" us, "fear" us, more "wary" of us or...who knows...hate us, I don't know. Maybe all of that.

Most definitely not.

If anyone believes that they need to have their head checked.

I can't tell you. It isn't an issue for me. I would prefer that the government concern itself with the security and prosperity of Americans than worry about what others think. I must be in a minority.

How does the US being more unpopular in other countries encourage respect? There is a correlation between the two, if the US is unpopular in a country, that country will not respect the US.

And does Trump want deals to favor the US to be completely one sided, how does that encourage respect and not resentment? Does a NAFTA that favors the US have to screw over Canada and Mexico as well? Should any US trading partner respect Trump and the US, if he is going to try to screw them over in trade deals?

How is Trump actively disrespecting Merkel or going off on Prime Minister Turnbull supposed to encourage respect from Germany and Australia, who are America's allies, not enemies?

Respect is separate from likability.

There are occasions in which both are held for the same entity, but the presence of likability is not essential to respect.

As a Colts fan, I happen to hate the Patriots. By extension, I also hate that pretty boy, Tom Brady. Also Bill Belichick and the whole organization from Kraft to the folks who man the souvenir booths.

That said, if I had to bet a pay check on which organization would win the next Super Bowl, that check would be placed on the Patriots. That's respect absent likability.

Same with the Nazis and the Nazi war machine. The Allies hated the Nazis, but respected the Wehrmacht.

The simple fact of the matter is that if something is both hated and respected, that entity is due far more respect than if it is loved and respected. Your mother was selective in what finger paintings she placed on the 'fridge.

On the world stage, the US is NEVER loved unless it is sending help. NOBODY loves the big dog in the fight.

And you don't think there is a correlation between these two things? If the US is becoming less popular in these countries, how does that lead to the US becoming more respected in these countries?

Down to its basic - popularity doesn't equal respect. You don't necessarily respect an group/country/person who is deemed popular.

Another antidote- a country that is a pushover or gives other countries what they want may be popular, but not necessarily respected.

Okay, but how is this meaningful in a geopolitical sense?

How do you determine whether a country where the US' image has taken a hit, "respect" the US more?

I think the important aspect respect in the harsh world of geo politics, is it means other countries like and trust each other and can see the benefit in helping each other, if country doesn't like the US, but somehow respects it, one how do we measure that and two how does help the US on the world stage?

I also think other countries don't respect or like certain things, when Bush invaded Iraq, other countries did like or respect that decision and that never changed.

I don't think Mexico likes or respects Trump, they think Trump disrespects Mexico and will return the favor and Mexico is more important then you think.

Have I given you any indication of how important I think Mexico is?

The respect or lack of respect for the US internationally shows in the actions of other countries.

I thought that recently the UN passed a resolution jointly offered by the US and China condemning North Korea and that this resolution carried with it increased sanctions.

Other countries following the lead of the US shows respect.

In this young administration, there have been precious few opportunities for evidence of such respect.

Since about 1943, there has been one ally in Europe that is indispensable and that Ally is the US. Take awa the US from NATO, and the good folks of Europe will be a large scale Crimea. EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS.

The contributions to NATO by all European Allies are increasing due to Trump's leadership. All of the SEATO Allies are pretty much in line with the US against North Korea.

It's good if your friends respect you. It's better when your enemies respect you.

You're trying to pretend that NATO Ally contributions increased under Trump is A bald ass lie the increase in contributions was agreed to under Obama and are increasing now. Your dishonest posts are getting old

Europe and Asia has moved on with respect to trade deals. Merkel has specifically said that the United States is no longer a reliable partner. So no, I'd say the world's respect for the US has dropped somewhat.

Oh boo hoo.

Speaking as someone living in Europe, the level of respect for Americans over the past 18 months has definitely sunk. The world is laughing at us, and frankly with this baffoon who would blame them. Countries around the world are already deciding how the new world without America as the leader will look like.

So, Europe is "the world" now? And as for your last sentence it seems to imply Africa and Latin America were just sitting on their hands for years, ignoring China, and waiting on the United States to roll into town and turn their lives around for the better, until Trump got in office? Or how about NOT.

Europe contains many of the countries in the world, I'm not sure where you got the idea that it's "the entire world", as I never said that. It doesn't matter where you are, any American living outside the US over the past 2 years has seen a negative change in sentiment towards Americans. You can say you like Trump for Trump, but he does NOT make us look good. He embodies every negative stereotype the rest of the world has about Americans. Nations are already forming new alliances and crafting a new world order that no longer has America at the top, which is exactly what Trump wanted.

What do you think of Europe?

I like it, but like anywhere it's obviously it's not perfect. Health care is affordable and universal, education is high quality and the standard of living is high. As an American having to sit and watch my country burn and divide itself it's at least nice to be living in a place that's peaceful and politically stable.

To me, the global community clearly is repugnant of Trump. What matters is, what do we think? Do we get their repugnance? And care? Apparently, 1/3 of us support Trump's foreign policy. Most of the remaining are a bunch of ******s. Do the math.

Which Trump foreign policies are you referring to? The Trump during the campaign that promised we'd stay out of the middle east and mind our own business, or the Trump now that's trying to surge troops in Afghanistan and pour trillions of US dollars into muslim countries? Which one makes me a ***** for opposing?

You're right, they're two totally separate things. It just so happens though that the rest of the world both likes and respects us less after seeing Trump rise to power and the crowds of ignorant Americans continue to cheer his completely idiotic policies. Trust me, the last thing he's won us among our fellow citizens of the world is respect.

It sounds like Europe is the place for you then.

For as long as I feel like it. It does give me a unique perspective in being close enough to actually hear the rest of the world laughing at us from the outside. Trump has burned a lot of the trust and respect America and Europe have built up over generations.
