For most people, no job means no money, no money means no food. There will never be any basic guaranteed income because the wealthy will not allow it. There is no Star Trek future for humanity. Here's what will actually happen.
This is going to start when driverless trucks hit the road and 5 million drivers are put out of work in the near future. 100,000 new tech job openings will come from this. 4.9 million will have no work, and will starve and go homeless. The welfare system will be put under enormous strain, and in response there will be severe cuts. Conservative states will probably fight to abolish welfare, leaving these throngs of unemployed with no means to feed themselves.
Most of them will start scrambling to survive via GoFundMe. You'll see a large growth in the number of people trying to find patrons that they can somehow entertain or otherwise endear themselves to rich folks to get money to survive. Think of it as finding a sugar daddy, but usually without the sex. As automation takes over more sectors of the job market, these patron-hunting people will swell in numbers, and there will be enormous competition. Most men will find no one, and will starve. Women will have to resort to de-facto prostitution, where "usually without the sex" will evolve into "usually with sexual favors".
Up to half the country - or more - will ultimately be living like this.
That is America's future, I have called it, your kids or grandkids will be living it. Enjoy.
No need to read anymore of this - it's simple. As automation continues to shrink the job market, people will starve.Even though we’re in the midst of a tech revolution that has led to the loss of many jobs, at the moment most employed Americans still go to work at jobs that have been around for a long time: They’re nurses or cashiers or retail workers, and so on. But what’s going to happen if technology starts gobbling up these jobs as well, breaking us out of the employment cycles to which we’re accustomed and leading instead to a long downward trend in the availability of regular work?
That’s the question Derek Thompson explores in a fascinating cover story in this month’s The Atlantic. It’s about “A World Without Work,” as the headline reads, and the piece is very much worth reading (it also serves as a very useful complement to Jennifer Senior’s article from January about what people may be giving up as the center of work life shifts away from traditional offices).
