Subversive groups, domestic or otherwise, tend to slip under the radar until their actions can no longer be ignored. That happened to Antifa in Charlottesville, when the group's name became widely known, but they'd been causing trouble on a larger scale since Trump's inauguration, where they broke windows and damaged property. Before that, they mainly stuck to the West Coast -- Portland saw a lot of burned cars and vandalized property from Antifa.
They're gaining a bit of notoriety now but there's not an intellectual giant among them, it appears. Chomsky just compared them to the Weathermen, so a domestic terrorist designation might be coming down the pipe. Chomsky also calls them "A gift to the Right."
