Perceptions of Discrimination

I believe the word "Perception" in the thread title is very appropriate. I have friends and family that see discrimination in almost everything unfortunately. They tend to believe everything is code or has a hidden meaning. However, sometimes bad service is just bad service. It has less to do with race and more to do with bad service.

When it comes to discrimination and prejudice, one is going to find it if they go looking -- even if it isn't there.

What? But literally aren't those the averages of the the two sides plus independents who likely fall in the middle. So why is the lower out of sync but not the higher?

Obviously it's not just the averages of the two groups plus a few independents. You do know how to read a chart, right? I suggest you look at all three categories more closely.

It shouldn't take a genius to see that the chart on the Dems correlates quite nicely with the one for "all Americans." It's the Republican chart that is all out of whack. And, it is really out of whack. Like cray cray out of whack.

This is a fascinating chart and accompanying article.

There are some clear, and rather amazing, differences between the opinions of Democrats and Republicans on this issue.

Besides the nutty notion that Blacks are the least discriminated people in the US, Republicans believe that Whites are discriminated against more than Gays and Immigrants, only slightly less than Muslims. The only groups they clearly agree are discriminated against more than them are Transpeople and Christians. They actually believe Christians (tied with Trans) are the most discriminated against group in the US.

Democrats, OTOH, are much more rational in their assessment. They bunch all the groups which are obviously discriminated against together. Hence you see low ratings for Whites and Christians but very high ratings for gays, blacks, trans, immigrants and Muslims, all of which are bunched in the high 70's and low to mid 80's. Although, there may very well be some debate on which sub-group within that band is discriminated against the most, they don't miss the bigger picture like Republicans obviously do.

So, my question is this. How can Republicans have such a distorted view on reality?

The key word is perception. A lot of this just has to do with partisan politics. The graph is really no surprise. You could have put poor people, the elderly, and women on there and gotten the same results.

Not really, but if believing that makes you feel better

ummm, no...the chart restated:

Whites: +13 / -11
Christians: +15/ -12
Blacks: -31 / +24
LGB: -21 / +18
Immigrants: -23 / +18
Muslims: -21 / +19

So no, I don’t see anything out of wack other than republicans and democrats see vast differences in the amount of discrimination and what constitutes discrimination as I would expect. Absent a comparison to some objective measure this chart really states the obvious imho.

lol...you wish.

The shape of the two charts: "All Americans" vs Democrats; is virtually identical. The only real difference is the magnitude of those numbers, and a bit of a flip on the opinions on the discrimination of blacks, which probably is skewed more due to the Republican's insane dismissal of black discrimination than it is due to the general opinion of the masses.

Now, look at the odd ball Republican chart. It's simply a cray cray interpretation of the current reality.

:lamo I sorry but that made my day. Math = magic, got it :) Will not defend evil republican "wack" sense of discrimination again :lamo

Just choose better battles. When you see a chart showing some whacky crap like Whites and Christians in the US are more discriminated against more than blacks, gays, trans, immigrants and Muslims, you probably are better off saying, "WTF?" than trying to defend it.

But, hey. Free country. I certainly do not want to discriminate by barring you from having an opinion, regardless how wrong it is. :)

The victim of oppression card has been played out. Who is "more" discriminated against is a child's game that mommy likes you more than me. Time to put on the big boy pants and compete with the world.

The answer appears quite clear.

Given the numbers shown in the table, they are better equipped to resist the propaganda those on the left are so dependent on.

The perceptions of a cross section of all Americans is the reality when it comes to how we perceive discrimination. And, when measured against that standard, the Republicans are out of sync. Way out of sync.
The Democrats are out of sync with the average across all Americans as well. They will be by definition because it’s an average. They could still be just as or even more wrong in their perceptions. Your initial assertion was that the views of the Republicans (and only theirs) were inconsistent with reality but you’ve not presented any reality.

These statistics have been presented (and probably created) in a particular way to create a particular impression and you’ve fallen for it (along with lots of other people I’m sure). If you really care about discrimination in the US, you should address the realities of that directly. If you only care about playing partisan political games, you’re part of the problem.
