The alt-right believes in core values that are unamerican, unethical, morally offensive, etc., they include white nationalists, but also the ones that like to sanitize their position and ride the line, opposing any/all racial politics out of a sense of victim-hood at the hands of the minority, backed by misguided government.

There are far more of these people, many Trump supporters, that are a real issue in the United States, as we have seen with the quality of president they chose, and the incredible lengths they go to excuse his misdeeds (for it is in their hearts that they agree with him).

The violence on both sides, is a minority/fringe aspect of the movements, and is common to many serious protest groups, and clashes through history. It is not the main issue, although you would sure like to try and twist the conversation to that, where there would be parity.

Next, don't fall into that trap set by semi-illiterate people who say, "No, you're talking about 'Classical liberalism!" or, "Liberal has been redefined." Liberal means the same thing it always has. I've participated in online discussion groups since the early nineties Usenet days and this definition thing, this confusion about what 'liberal' means, is only an issue when I'm engaging low-functioning conservative Americans. But hey, the easy and comfortable way is to gather everything you don't like about politics and society into a pile and call the heap 'liberalism'. Makes talking to other semi-literate conservatives a feel-good moment but intelligent conservatives will just pass you by. Happens here often- don't know if you've noticed. Not all conservatives believe 'liberal' means everything, anarchy and socialism and communism and whatever, everything on the left.

It is the left who have been vandalizing confederate statues. It is the left who have been clashing with the police. It is the left who have been arrested. 33 of them were arrested in Boston, zero on the right. It is the left who attacked and assaulted the white supremacist leader in Cville. It was in Cville that the police had to protect the white supremacists from an angry left mob. The police were not protecting the left because it was the left who were the ones who were out of control. Then one idiot drives his car through a crowd and Trump gets blasted for saying that all sides need to get rid of their hate.

Boston: 33 lefties arrested. Zero righties. Confederate statues across the country are being vandalized by the left. It is the lefties who are being arrested for clashing with police. Police are needing to protect the white supremacists from the counter protesters. I guess I'm getting old fashioned but in my day it was the ones clashing with police and getting arrested for doing it who were the bad guys. In the liberal world, those are the good guys.

The thing is America is a place of free speech where people are allowed to have differing opinions, no matter how different and revolting those opinions may be, as long as they don't break the law. Therefore, white supremacists are allowed to hate. They are allowed to protest the removal of confederate statues. Hate is not against the law, hate crimes are. It says a lot when the white supremacists can't have a peaceful protest without being afraid of counter protesters and needing police protection. It clearly shows who the bad guys really are. By the left making such an issue out of it, more credence is given to the white supremacists, as in Charlottesville. The locality had already decided to remove the statues. There were a fairly small number of white supremacists who were protesting. Nothing they were going to do would have changed the locality's minds. The counter protesters could have stayed home (as they were begged to), the white supremacists would have gone home, and the statues would have come down anyway.

That’s right, the counter protesters could have stayed home and not expressed their right to free speech. You’re suggesting that people self-suppress their own right to free speech. Speech, which the elected representatives hear. Speech, which, if the white supremacists continually expressed everywhere, without others expressing their right to free speech in opposition, would be the only speech that those decision makers hear. Is that what you want? I look forward to your reply.

Most of the local officials of Charlottesville, the ones who voted to remove the statues, pleaded with the left to not come to Charlottesville and counter protest.

If an Antifa breaks the law all Southern History educational perservers, Anti-Nazi, and cops should help arrest the criminal. If White heritage people break the law then all "Rebel Boys", Antifa, and cops should help arrest the criminal. If a cop breaks the law... cops, Antifa, and Nazis should help arrest the criminal. Whatever definitions you wanna chose for whatever group.
