This is the kind of thing that led to Trump getting elected. This is what identity politics has come to. As a black American, I took that quote to mean "all parties involved in this behavior". That is most certainly the White Supremacists and KKK but also the counter protestors wielding clubs and attacking journalists. Many people are simply sick and tired of the same old crap and same old speech. 54 years ago MLK had a dream of equality where color didn't matter. However, for the 5+ decades since then we are still being pushed on identity politics.
I don't want to be seen as a "black" American. I want to be seen as a citizen, a voter, an IT guy, a photographer, a music lover, a comic nerd, a voracious reader, an artist, a poet, a brother, an uncle, a Texan, etc.. But as long as people keep pointing out I'm black and keep acting on it (or expecting me to be driven by the fact that I'm black), that's what I'll be. When someone says "rising tides lifts all ships", that means ME. Just because they didn't say "black" ships doesn't mean I'm excluded. "Across the board" means ME. "All sides" would mean ME (if I was there). "All citizens" means ME.
These are two groups of violent knuckleheads. All sides were being very anti-American. Failure to recognize that is simply willful ignorance. Claiming a wrong because one side wasn't singled out is at best hypocritical and at worse simply adds fuel to fire that should have been snuffed decades ago if not for identity politics.
