I'm crying right now.

Everything we've fought many decades for - all of the hard-fought social progress we've made - it's under threat of being completely destroyed within months. This country seems to be beyond redemption. We may be at the point where we need an existential threat to this country to make people see that country is more important than what color your skin is. :(:(:(

I do wonder sometimes how capable humanity is at progressing, I think tribalism is part of human nature, a way humans survived for centuries and I think xenophobia is an out growth of that.

I am both left wing and completely and utterly cynical. I don't trust the government, political parties unions or corporations, so I think you have to spread out the power between different groups, the more power one of these groups gets, the more they can abuse it. Even the public can't always be counted on to do the right thing.

Frankly I think Trump's win justifies my cynicism, I have always been cynical, but Trump confirms some of my more cynical trains of thought.

You left out the stuff where he shamelessly used this tragedy to engage in self congratulation for his own economic boasts. That was disgusting.

You left out where he condemned the alt right for invading this community and chanting Nazi slogans in their torchlight march and then showing up armed and loaded for battle hours later. OH WAIT!!!! Trump never did that!!!!! He was too busy patting himself on the back for his claimed economic achievements.

Gosh, a politician who blows his own horn. We've never seen that before!

Honestly?

I think you are very unstable if you actually believe in your mind that 500 or so assholes can represent who Trump voters, or conservatives really are.

99.9% of conservative voters wouldn't piss on these protesters if they were on fire.

Go to your happy place and get over it.

Show us where previous presidents used a nation tragedy involving death like this to toot their own horn like Trump did today.

Lets see it.

How dense can a person be not to condemn using this for his own patting himself on the back for something that had nothing to do with what he was talking about?

These assholes are who Hillary was talking about with the deplorable comment. I wonder how many will stop calling themselves that now understanding who they are associating themselves with. Those big trucks with proud deplorable means they are on the side of the racists today. I like to think most of them are just dumb not really deplorable.

What about us brown males?
Yeah, governess gave me mine, you're due too. I'll eat some humble pie on that.
I could fall back to how it's still relevant and not you personally, but I might choke on it :)

You are over wrought. Go get some air or something.

The list of examples of Presidents and other politicians using this sort of event to tout their own agenda is too long to list. It's just what we've come to expect.

But before I give examples, what are you referring to as a national tragedy? That a bunch of idiots had a riot? Personally, I think it was a false flag operation. We're going to find out that those alt right people were all on the pay of the DNC, I'll bet. It was a rather cartoonish example of far right wingers, to be sure. They couldn't have satirized the far right any better if they'd tried.

Seriously, it makes you think that we have nothing to fear from the far right if that's the best that they can do.

But to get back to examples, every time a mass killing took place, whether of children or whatever, Obama was on the airwaves along with other Democrats using it to promote gun control. I don't remember you condemning that.

Bill Clinton used the 1992 riot in LA, the Rodney King riot, that resulted in a $billion in damage, to push his liberal economic program. For other Democratic politicians like Maxine Waters it was all about poverty and racism. The rioters seemed to think it was about a miscarriage of justice.

The killing of gay men at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando by a Muslim man in 2016 was an opportunity for some Democratic politicians to condemn domestic Christian right wing terrorist groups they imagine exist. There was also the obligatory call for gun control. Invariably the gun control proposals they want would have done nothing to prevent the particular tragedy in question.

A person could go on like this for a long time.

Your examples ARE NOT WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.

You were clearly challenged to present similar examples of where we had a national tragedy like this and right in the middle of saying how sorry he was, a President stopped and changed gears patting himself on the back for programs having nothing to do with what he was talking about. Trump did this yesterday bragging bout his economic achievements in the middle of his remarks about the violence in Virginia.

Got any?

The only thing I've seen destroyed is any semblance of cooperation between the political parties. That has been getting worse and worse for decades.

Actually this may help turn the tide. No way can the bulk of the GOP continue ignoring the scumbags in their midst. And, more and more of them are coming out to condemn this crap.

Or after the Lib shot up the Ball Park?

Or after this?

Hate crime is suspected after a gunman kills 3 white men in downtown Fresno

Kori Ali Muhammad told his family there was a war going on between blacks and whites in America.

On social media, he referred to white people as “devils.” Earlier in the year, he released a rap album replete with violent, explicit, racially-charged lyrics, including referring to himself in one song as a “black soldier.”

Trump Condemns Riots in Charlottesville: ‘Swift Restoration of Law and Order’ Is Vital.

“We must love each other, respect each other and cherish our history and our future together,” the president said in remarks before signing the Veterans Affairs Act in Bedminster, New Jersey.

“What is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives,” Trump said. “No citizen should ever fear for their safety and security in our society.”

“No matter our color, creed, religion, or political party, we are all Americans first. We love our country, we love our God, we love our flag, we’re proud of our country. We’re proud of who we are,” said the president."

What's not to like?

ya that seems pretty good

i dont love his god but freedom of religion is nice

Nope. Have faith.

The first time America's system came under existential threat from within its own government was all the way back with our second president: John Adams.

He passed the Aliens and Sedition Act and suspended the First Amendment. He jailed people for protesting, he jailed journalists, he deporting people with no evidence of wrong-doing, and even jailed other people in the government.

We survived. Because the country is built to be able to survive powerful people acting at their very worst.

It is frustrating that America can be so incredibly slow to change, but that also means that the country is more resistant to a singular despot coming in and destroying the entire country. That slowness is a barricade against corruption.

If the people stay on his back -- and so far, I'm encouraged -- America will survive this era of history too.

America's press is coming out with strength. America's people are coming out with strength. America's Congress is coming out with strength. The way it was built to do.

Just don't stop.

AA has said many things which indicate he'd be perfectly fine with measures like the Alien and Sedition Acts, as long as they were enacted against the people he chose, so this probably isn't the best example.

Probably so. But there are more reasonable people who are also feeling worried about the stability of the republic, as it were. And to all of them, I think it's important we remember our history and how much corruption we've been able to ultimately put down.

This, I agree with.

Hey ACLU, the blood is on YOUR hands for allowing these hateful bigots a platform to spew their hate.
The ACLU is not a partisan organization. Their job is to defend civil liberties, including the right to speak, even when they disagree with what those individuals say.

The ACLU did the right thing by protecting their right to assemble and speak freely. It is the responsibility of the individuals, the groups, and the police to prevent a situation like this escalating into violence.
