I noted in today's Miami Herald that hundreds of U.S. illegals are taking their chances on receiving asylum in Canada rather than being deported by the USA.

That's great!

I wonder how we can persuade all the others who are here illegally to do that? With any luck, Canada will be as screwed up as we are in no time at all. (Note: I am not wishing bad fortune on our Canadian friends at all. It would be just a wee bit of revenge for all the criticism we receive by some on our immigration policies though.) :)

Because unlike Trump we actually know how refugee status works and if they are deemed to not be eligible they will be sent back to the US or Haiti, the problem is what to do in the mean time. From my understanding they are not illegal in the US, yet, but will be soon which why they are coming to Canada.

That'd be luck, would it?
Ya know, just because some stupid crap comes into your head doesn't mean it needs to come out your mouth. It's called having a filter and it's something most people learn in adolescence.

They're welcome to them.

Not illegals yet at least for the most part

The greatest number currently are Haitians who were/are in the US currently legally but likely to be deported back to Haiti as policy that allowed them to stay after the Haitian earthquake is not extended. A similar program in Canada was not extended in 2015. In all likelihood the Haitians crossing now into Canada will likely be deported, as I doubt they can file a successful refuge claim

A few months ago it was east Africans (Somalis) in southern Manitoba. They would most likely be sent back to the US or granted refugee status, given the high chance of persecution in Somalia

Correct to a point

The US and Canada allowed some Haitians to stay after the earthquake. Canada ended that program in 2015, the US is about to. The Haitians crossing the boarder now will likely be sent back to the US or deported to Haiti

Filters are overrated. The older I get the less inclined I am to suffer fools and be polite.

Well you will most likely be getting them back.

Not if we continue to take away the benefits that brought them here in the first place. The less socialist we get, the more they'll head for the land of eternal freebies to the north.

Enjoy.

A low setting for a filter is ok provided the accuracy of what was being said. The OP was very inaccurate in his description of what was going on and did not even reflect the article he posted

Betty Versannes is one of the lucky ones: When a powerful earthquake buried Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Jan 12, 2010, she was here, a world away. Her sister and cousin died in the rubble. Her other relatives moved into tents, and some live there still, in a country that is far from recovered.
Days later, recognizing the depth of Haiti’s misery and the complexity of the rebuilding effort, the United States government extended a seldom-used lifeline to Haitians in the United States — temporary protected status, or T.P.S. The program allows people, like Ms. Versannes, who were visiting or were living here illegally before the earthquake to live and work in the United States until conditions back home improved.

Not illegals, for the dumb people who continue to think they are

Well, this is me, not suffering a fool. That was a damned stupid thing to say.

Canada said there's a limit and it's about to be reached.

I just read the article. The aliens are illegal,...in Canada. The article says that the US issued visa extensions are not being renewed and so the Haitian visitors visa are close to expiring. If they don't leave the US before they expire they will be illegal aliens.

I think AlbqOwl did misconstrue the article a bit.

Not surprised. I didn't read it but it's about what I thought. For awhile last winter people were showing up in Manitoba, some with serious frost injuries, because they were afraid of being deported from the US.
People don't understand that it's actually pretty hard to get into Canada. Legally anyway, it is still the world's longest unguarded border. We're accepting of legitimate refugees but that's a hard case to make, coming from the US.

The Miami Herald cited did not specify whether they were illegal or would be illegal. But it is a pretty safe bet that if they are in the USA legally or had been granted asylum, they would not fear deportation. And I'm sure that Canada would not be arresting and detaining them if they were legal there.

You get the same impression from Reuters a few months ago though the Canadian government may now be getting more alarmed at the numbers that are trying to go up there.

I would prefer levying a fine on the illegals and legalize their status.

As I understand it if they enter Canada legally and apply for refugee status they would be sent back to the USA to be processed there and vice versa.

How so? Can you show me where in the article it says these people are soon to be illegal? It calls them migrants and says they are wanting into Canada out of fear they will be deported here. Why would people who are here legally by being granted asylum or otherwise fear deportation?

They fear deportation because the rule allowing them to stay is about to expire but the main problem with that it already expired here years ago. They are being arrested and detained because they are crossing illegally into Canada that is how illegal border crossing works, then claiming refugee status which means we cannot deport them until their case is looked at.

The Latest: Canada sends soldiers to migrant border crossing | Miami Herald

Good afternoon AO - hope all is well with you.

Just wanted to provide a little background and context for the story and what is actually happening here.

1. Canada and the US have a reciprocal agreement that provides that any "refugee" who arrives in one of the two countries becomes the responsibility of that country and if that refugee tries to cross into the other country via one of the many manned and official crossing stations such as airports, customs stations, etc. that refugee will be immediately be denied access and returned to the first country.

2. Early in January/February when President Trump enacted his executive order related to banning people into the US travelling from 7 or 8 Arab/Muslim countries, our imbecilic Prime Minister tweeted out that Canada has open borders and welcomes all the world's refugees. It was a major misstep by our idiot leader and he has yet to clarify or correct his stupidity.

3. As a result, many "illegals" living in the US started travelling north to the Canadian border and in some cases taxis were driving illegals from NYC up to the border and people were walking across fields and unmanned stations and roads between the US and Canada and claiming refugee status in Canada. At first it was a few 100 a month because, as you can imagine, walking in freezing temps across frozen fields and virtual wilderness is not a pleasant outing, but now it is becoming a crisis in the making with several 1000 crossing each month. Mostly they are doing so into Quebec because of the Haitian issue and the fact that Montreal has a very large expat Haitian community of just under 100,000 people.

4. It became a major news item this week because the numbers of people crossing into Canada illegally is over taxing the border and immigration departments and the people can't be processed and evaluated in a timely and proper fashion. Usually, in such cases, immigration officials would take a couple of days to process and determine the eligibility of a person to stay in Canada - now the backlog is several months. In the meantime, the government has decided to house several 1000 people in Montreal's Olympic Stadium in tents and cots etc, pending processing.

As you may imagine, Canada and Canadians are a very generous people and we welcome in the range of 250,000 immigrants/refugees/temporary workers into the country each year and most of us are okay with this because it helps our economy. But most of us are adamantly opposed to the idiot in chief telling the world that all are welcome and creating this crisis. It's another example of bleeding heart liberals and their virtue signaling that causes untold problems and consequences that thinking people could easily predict but liberals ignore.

I think you need some corrections, If they came into the US legally they wouldn’t be trekking into the land of Molson and Maple syrup in the dark amber of night. Any legal US citizen can just cross the boarder into Canada at any location without hassle as can any Canadian citizen into the US. I don’t know this as fact but I sure hope once they get to Canada you can’t send them back to the US for us to deal with.

They are refugees with status in the US, we can send them back to you.

The article stated the US was not going to extend the Haitian visa waivers. That means they are here in the US legally still which the article pointed out. They would be deported upon expiration of their visa's. They entered Canada unlawfully.
