What is a greater threat for an authoritarian regime, Free flowing info (the internet) or guns? There has been attempts to regulate both.

Thoughts?

Against tyranny, info doesn't do much good without guns. Many live under tyranny with info but no guns. How many live under tyranny with guns but no info? A few (relatively), like NK, live under tyranny with no info and no guns.

Both would be a significant threat to a authoritarian regime.

Info. There have been plenty of cases of failed armed insurrections against authoritarian regimes. Free flow of information causes cultural change and weakness the regime over time.

If you have guns it's going to be harder for an authoritarian regime to stop the free flowing info. Not so much the other way around.

Free flowing internet. Communication = organization and if groups can organize, tight-fisted regimes loose their grip.

With free flow in info, you can find out where to get the guns.

Free flow of information is definitely the greater threat. Authoritarian regimes are more susceptible to collapse when the people stop believing in the regime. Without access to information the people have no reason to doubt what the regime says, and are more likely to believe whatever the regime tells them.
