I haven't yet really formed a specific thing to focus on. Both calls are just giant, hot messes, and you can really gain a sense of President Nieto and Prime Minister Turnbull just trying to keep the phone calls steady and on course as Trump fumes on about being embarrassed and laughed at while simultaneously bragging about his election win.

A few fun points:

Trump, to Nieto: "They are sending drugs to Chicago, Los Angeles, and to New York. Up in New Hampshire – I won New Hampshire because New Hampshire is a drug-infested den – is coming from the southern border." [Trump did not win New Hampshire]

Trump, to Turnbull: "Look, I spoke to Putin, Merkel, Abe of Japan, to France today, and this was my most unpleasant call because I will be honest with you."

This exchange between Turnbull and Trump:

TRUMP
I have no choice to say that about it. Malcom [sic], I am going to say that I have no choice but to honor my predecessor’s deal. I think it is a horrible deal, a disgusting deal that I would have never made. It is an embarrassment to the United States of America and you can say it just the way I said it. I will say it just that way. As far as I am concerned that is enough Malcom [sic]. I have had it. I have been making these calls all day and this is the most unpleasant call all day. Putin was a pleasant call. This is ridiculous.
TURNBULL
Do you want to talk about Syria and DPRK?
TRUMP
[inaudible] this is crazy.
TURNBULL
Thank you for your commitment. It is very important to us.
TRUMP
It is important to you and it is embarrassing to me. It is an embarrassment to me, but at least I got you off the hook. So you put me back on the hook.
TURNBULL
You can count on me. I will be there again and again.

Trump, to Nieto: "Because you and I are both at a point now where we are both saying we are not to pay for the wall. From a political standpoint, that is what we will say. We cannot say that anymore because if you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that. I am willing to say that we will work it out, but that means it will come out in the wash and that is okay. But you cannot say anymore that the United States is going to pay for the wall. I am just going to say that we are working it out. Believe it or not, this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important talk about."

NIETO
But my position has been and will continue to be very firm saying that Mexico cannot pay for that wall.
TRUMP
But you cannot say that to the press. The press is going to go with that and I cannot live with that. You cannot say that to the press because I cannot negotiate under those circumstances.

Why is this a hot mess? What's a hot mess is **** like this that, if even true, leaks out of the White House.

And you don't even have anything to say about it. Good Lord.

Yes, it is absolutely nuts that a President's dialogue with a foreign head of state is leaked to the press. Frankly, "absolutely nuts" is any day that ends in a "y," Maggie. What more can be said on that point?

As for why the phone calls themselves are a hot mess, it's because Trump just rambles on like a lunatic for god knows how long. There's barely any structure, direction or cohesion to his rants.

Oh, and another thing: the story that Trump had an awful phone call was touted as false at the time, and as usual it's been show to be true. Also, Trump lied (per usual), when he tweeted this on February 3:

"Thank you to Prime Minister of Australia for telling the truth about our very civil conversation that FAKE NEWS media lied about. Very nice!"

The sieve that has become the White House should shame us all. "Hot mess." "Lunatic." "Rants." Yes, this will be intelligent discourse.

Why do you prefer euphemisms?

So many gems, thanks for posting that Cardinal. Transcripts are so much better than a press quote or two.
Looks like Trump is really draining that swamp!

Enrique: We will not pay for the wall, ever.

Trump: Okay, Enrique, that is fine and I think it is fair. I do not bring up the wall but when the press brings up the wall, I will say, “let us see how it is going – let us see how it is working out with Mexico.” Because from an economic issue, it is the least important thing we were talking about, but psychologically, it means something so let us just say “we will work it out.”

Wow. Mexico paying for it is far less important than Trump saving face. What an asshole.

His discussion with Turnbull started out so-so, Trump had a moderately justifiable position. But in my read, Turnbull refuted every argument, and Trump got pissy and tried to bully him basically, and wanted to break the deal.
Basically Turnbull said the agreement the U.S. committed to was to vet 1250 non-conflict zone refutes that have extensive documentation as a result of being in Australia for 3 years. As long as we vet them in good faith, we don't even have to take them all, just whatever we agree is safe to take.

What's with Trump thinking it's OK to break deals? That's a slash and burn mentality. These nations persist...we have to have a reputation so that next time, you know, we have credibility. I don't get it.

Why can't you be upset at both? This is a case where Trump has flat out lied.....again. Why aren't you upset over that? And yet again, I will point out the head of the ship is Trump and he can't get the right people to STOP the leaks. How embarrassing is that and why aren't you upset over Trump not getting a handle over his workers?

Yes, it is embarrassing that Trump cannot put together an administration and cabinet together that can't stop the leaks. No matter how you slice it, this should be a PRIORITY for Trump's cabinet and why can't he get someone in there to take care of the problem?

LOL! The transcripts speak for themselves. Trump is in way over his head, he's only concern is with his appearance, and he's never been the deal-maker that his worshipers believed he was when he spoon fed them that pablum.

He's not just a rank incompetent, he's unhinged.

Wait, I'm confused. Are you saying the "Fake News" told the truth and Trump lied? No way. Trump is the most honest man I know. I can't imagine him lying. Remember, it's Hillary who is a liar, not Trump. Trump is honest. Transcripts must be forgeries.

Let's ask Trump how he feels about leaks:

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Re: ‘This deal will make me look terrible’: Full transcripts of Trump’s calls with Me

In all of this mentally deranged ****, two things are now clear.

1)The wall is something Trump does not actually care about it. He just wants Mexico to play along with the political show, so Trumps supporters will believe it's going to get built - when it isn't. He even said "it's the least important thing" when it comes to his concerns politically, but he knows his base will be outraged if he admits defeat this early on, thus the pleas for Mexico to play along.

2)Trump is losing his mind.
