Lynch elementary schools will lose the 'Lynch' due to racial implications

I would mock the people offended and remind them that making a fuss over a name, dishonors the person whose name is on the building because the protestors are wrapped up in the insignificant.

Fortunately you have the intelligence and strength to withstand any blowback from the people you mock.

As for insignificance v significance ... reminds me of the expression One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I do not believe in empowering stupidity. This is stupidity.

What if the residents of "Blacksburg VA." decided that it's racist? That would be dumber than ****.

In 1973, I lived in Lakeland FL and I had a roommate named Hink who grew up in Blacksburg. I spent a week that Summer in a Blacksburg Cabin. In hindsight, Hink's peeps seemed pretty racists. If the demographics in Blacksburg have changed and the city government after thoughtful deliberations and due process change the name of the city, I support their decision.

In Florida, during my life, Cape Canaveral became Cape Kennedy then reverted back to Cape Canaveral. I have never felt they dishonored Kennedy in the process... though I have heard others suggest as much.

Changing names, removing statues, flags, etc. is a pathetic attempt to appease some offended group. Who gets to decide if a group is sufficiently offended enough? Who gets to decide what changes should be made? Will making the change offend another group? How do you appease the newly offended group? If I’m offended that the name Lynch was removed, will they reinstate it? More often than not, people are offended because of ignorance. There is often a history or facts they are unaware of. The more reasonable solution is to educate, which ironically never occurred to this school board.

Did the school board consider educating their students on how and why their school got its name and teach about the benevolence of the benefactors who donated land for the school. Or point out that there are other well known Americans, some of them black, with the name Lynch, such as Loretta Lynch- Attorney General, Jane Lynch-Gay actress, and of course there's Marshawn Lynch, black football star. And none of them are considering changing their name.

They could have pointed out to students that there are many words in the English language that have dual meanings and that it is important to know the context in which a word is used. How ironic and sad that making this into an opportunity for learning never occurred to this school board. As with most liberal solutions, they solve one problem and cause two more.

Whatever its just a school name who cares if they change it?

It’s a dangerous road to go down when someone wants something changed because they are offended by it. Some things are obvious. But what if you are offended because you are actually ignorant of some facts? Should you change anything if someone is offended by it? If so, who gets to decides what and if it gets changed? Suppose the reasons given for a group being offended are not valid, but they're still offended? Do you appease them by making changes anyway? Suppose I and several thousand other people are offended by any group that identifies themselves by the color of their skin, since that seems exclusionary and therefore that is offensive to us? Should all groups with the reference to blacks be made to change their name? If not, why not?

Yes, it's just a school name now, but suppose it's your last name they want you to change, or your mother's name. Where do you draw the line?

Do you think the three week gap between your post and my post factors into the quality of a back and forth discussion?

I don't know the inner thinking or vote of each School Board member. You might contact the School Board and request how you can obtain a copy of minutes of the relevant meetings. The minutes would reflect the official record of their deliberations.

I do not support the changing of thats schools name. But it has nothing to do with what I want. If the community wants to change the name even if its through ignorance its their liberty to do so. So I m not appeasing anyone, hell Im not even in the same State much less school district. And seriously schools have changed their name before and they will do it time after time. If that offends you oh well.

Seems silly. Maybe if it were no longer a common name. Like if the school was called "Hitler Elementary" after someone other than Adolf Hitler a long time ago. That name is no longer accepted as a normal name. But Lynch is a very common modern name. Are they going to stop hiring people with that name? Hell, now that I think about it my high school principal's name was Principal Lynch.

Yeah, silly. But they can name their school what they want.

I guess I was trying to get you to see this in a larger context. This change did not directly affect you, I get that. But how would you feel if it was your name sake and your family had donated thousands of $ and they named a school after your name. But then someone was offended by your name for any reason and wanted it removed. Would you have a problem with that? Suppose it was your favorite football or hockey team name they wanted to change? My point is, do you think it’s ok to change anything that offends someone?

What you are saying is that changing things because it offends people shouldnt be allowed because it might offend people?

Some people will be offended at the name change some people will not. Not everyone is going to be pleased. I know that you see a bigger picture and there is a bigger picture here: Its the communities liberty to change their schools name to a name that does not offend them. It doesnt really matter why they want to change the name, it is their right to change it and no amount of being offended by it will take that right away. Im other words you are just whining because some told you to be offended by what the Right has termed political correctness. Sorry but I see your attempt to spread propaganda.

I think you miss the point. Propaganda? Not sure what you think I am propagandizing about. Remember that this is an opinion forum and I’m giving my opinion. And my opinion is that it was a bad decision to remove the name Lynch and there would have been a much better way to handle the matter. And that better way, in my opinion, would have been to use the situation to inform and educate the children and parents. Instead of removing the name, why not use the opportunity to inform and teach all incoming students of where the school got its name and a little history. Explain that the word Lynch, like many words in the English language, can have multiple meanings; Just like cracker, ratchet, or caboose. They could demonstrate that there are many minorities with the last name Lynch and that surely each of those families are very proud of their last name, just as they are each proud of their own last names. They could teach about words having different meanings depending upon their context. Bottom line is why not use this an opportunity to educate, which should be their main objective, rather than bow to ignorance…in my opinion.

Whats the big deal really? The school is not named after anyone special. The Lynch family donated land for a school a 100 years a go. Three schools had the Lynch name in them. That was very civil of them, but that doesn't mean that three schools need to remain named after them after a hundred years.

“There were an increasing amount of questions and some complaints from families of color around the name,” Centennial Superintendent Paul Coakley

To be clear I do have family and friends that live in Portland. I went to several Portland public schools myself. Basically no one cares about the name changes, it is a non-issue. The only people that seem upset about it are the people spreading propaganda about political correctness. Its the conservative line about "being offended" that we here so often from Republicans these days. Dont kid yourself you are not here just merely sharing your opinion with me. I mean I did notice that your opinion mirrors thousands of Conservatives. It is propaganda whether you know it is or not. The irony is that a public school changing its name offends you.

They better get to work petitioning the name change of the city of Lynchburg, Virginia.

It seems like it doesn't take much anymore to get someone's knickers in a wad. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that some poor lonely loon is right now searching far and wide to take the smallest damn thing and swear up and down that it has "racial connotations".

It's all about power and control. In order to control a government, you must control 2 things. Guns and speech.

The national movement to change racially offensive names of buildings, sports teams and landmarks will soon touch a group of schools in southeast Portland. Lynch Meadows, Lynch Wood and Lynch View elementary schools will shed their "Lynch" before the upcoming school year in response to growing concern about the word's racial connotations.

What about Loretta Lynch??

We are headed to a very dangerous place with this insanity.

Next is banning the word "black".

Do you know what the word propaganda means? Obviously not, or you would recognize that both you and the school board are also engaging in propaganda. I never mentioned the words political correctness, so why do you bring it up? My opinion, if you read it, gave good reasons for not changing the name and most had to do with education, not political correctness. I never claimed that the school board did not have the right to make the decision they did, so please don’t imply that I did. And I don’t appreciate your claim that I would be offended by any school district that changed its name. That is a lie, but a good tactic when you have no reasonable argument to offer. And you might also want to look up the word irony, as your use of the word makes no sense. Looks like somebody else could use some educating. I gather from your reply that you don't think that educating both parents and students might be a better approach to this matter, before they undertook the name change. If that is true, why do you think so?

Obviously you do not think much for the people who wanted the name changed. Somehow you believe these people that wanted the name changed were uneducated, just didnt understand. I guess since it was black families that complained it is them that you are talking about needing to be educated.

There just isnt any evidence that the people that complained about the name were uneducated. I suspect that they knew full well that it was a last name and why the schools had that name. You jumping to that conclusion speaks volumes about your position.

And dont try to pretend that you are not making the anti-political correctness argument. We have all heard it and you my friend are making that argument, so please do not insult my intelligence.

First, I doubt very seriously that elementary children had a good knowledge of the origin of their school’s name. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. In all the articles I read about the school board’s decision, I saw no effort to make sure that the children knew where the name came from. If they did have a good understanding and if they knew of other very famous people that have that same last name, I also doubt they would have a problem with the word. Again, I could be wrong but I doubt it. Most people fully recognize the difference between the last name Lynch and the word lynch. Just like most people know the difference between “cracker” and Cracker Barrel or “whitey” and Whitey Ford and don’t demand that they change their name. Second, you saw no evidence that the people complaining were uneducated? Are you serious? Of course they were uneducated, they were elementary school children and that’s why they’re going to school, to get educated. Which is my point, why not educate them about the word? And right on cue with every liberal discussion, out comes the race card. I guess you liberals just can’t help yourselves or is it mandatory?

First put your hyper partisan dick back in your pants, I am not nor have I ever been a liberal.

And you are just masturbating now since the names have already been changed as of the 9th. Kids will go back to school and the school will have a different name, no one was hurt except for your feelings. As I said in the beginning it is just a school name. it isnt a conspiracy ignorance or any other thing that you can think up to whine about. Some parents wanted the name changed the school said ok, no one objected in the school district affected.

Is there a talk show host going on about this or something? You know the people that get people riled up in order to get good ratings? Meanwhile no one in Portland cares. Let them govern their own public schools.

We already arrived and embraced a very dangerous place since the day Trump became POTUS. Let us pray we as a nation successfully navigate the current insanity.

Let us applaud changes occurring due to increased racial sensitivity. Your link and OP also increase public awareness. Thank you!

The left just doesn't seem to ever understand that Trump won the election because the majority of the states are sick and tired of being politically correct.

Have you noticed that those that hate Trump never have anything specific to offer or point to, just general hate? Trump had the Apprentice show for many years where he hosted scores of Hollywood types, those of color, men, women, and many different ethnic backgrounds. Through all of those years did we ever hear stories of him being a racist, misogynistic, homophobic, or anything but a fair and tough businessman? No. Now, all of a sudden, he is all of these things. Amazing.
