Black Mississippi student forced to share valedictorian title with white student ..... who had lower GPA

Jasmine Shepard was the top of her class and had the highest GPA, but her Mississippi high school forced her to “share” the title with students whose GPAs were lower. The school has never done something like this before, but they’ve also never had a black valedictorian before. She and her family think it’s because of her race.

Prior to 2016, all of Cleveland High School’s valedictorians were white,” a lawsuit against the school says, according to The Washington Post. “As a result of the school official’s unprecedented action of making an African-American student share the valedictorian award with a white student, the defendants discriminated against.”

Shepard was also forced to deliver her speech to students after the white student and would have been forced to walk behind the girl as well if Jasmine hadn’t protested. However, Jasmine doesn’t want to see backlash against the other student, saying that the young woman is “the kindest-hearted, sweetest person.”

The Cleveland School District, through an attorney, is calling the suit “frivolous” claiming the students had identical “grade point averages.”

What is there to rationalize? The school claims they had the same GPA which would pretty much render the entire story false.

Both students had the same GPA, Jamie Jacks, an attorney for the district, wrote.

It's possible they had the same weighted GPA but the Black student had a higher unweighted GPA. Most schools use weighted GPA to determine Valedictorian. It's easy to prove one way or the other. Just make the course schedule, and weighted grades public.

An attorney for the Cleveland School District called the lawsuit “frivolous” and said the students “had identical grade point averages.”

“As such, under school board policy, they were both named valedictorian of their graduating class,” Jamie Jacks wrote in an email. “The district’s policy is racially neutral and fair to students.”

This is nothing more that a racist black person playing the race card

Definitely should be done by weighted GPA. I spose it is possible to have the same wGPA, but highly unlikely...

Classic, Time Tested and Proven

I was not dissapointed

Cleveland MS is separated by railroad tracks, whites and blacks each on their respective side. The schools were court ordered to desegregate 50 years ago and are just now doing it. the situation is certainly believable given the town.

Well I have to say I'm glad this young lady handled it with class and dignity ... she can now leave it behind her.

:lamo you didn't even read it.

The rationalization is right in what you copied:

I believe the mother believes Jasmie deserves extra GPA points for the color of her skin, or some such.

What's funny, is in other articles, the mother is quoted as saying, she is not sure what the white girl's GPA is.. Rather odd to still claim it is racism.

Not going to lie, if this was almost any other state (save for maybe Alabama or Georgia) I would assume this is just another left-wing gimmick to create uproar where none should be done.

Considering the place though, it doesn't seem unlikely for some level of discrimination.

Any update on the case?

The mother also complained that the white speaker was walking in line first.. you know.. because that alphabet is just as racist as Mississippi, I suppose. Or maybe white people just have last names that start with letters earlier in the alphabet then their black counterparts... Not really certain what her complaint of racism was there...

Your belief and reality are certainly two different things
