Deer battle over territory. Alpha bucks try to amass harems of hinds, despite persistent challenges from betas.
Even redwinged blackbirds are territorial, perhaps to preserve for themselves the choicest area to nest and cull grub for the brood.
Nesting in a desolate area would mean much more work for the parents trying to attend to hungry nestlings.
