WASHINGTON — Obama administration officials knew they were on shaky ground in spending billions of dollars on health insurance subsidies without clear authority. But they did not think a long-shot court challenge by House Republicans was cause for deep concern.

For one thing, they would be out of office by the time a final ruling in the case, filed in 2014, was handed down. They also believed that a preliminary finding against the administration would ultimately be tossed out. Finally, they figured that President Hillary Clinton could take care of the problem, if necessary.

Well, they are out of office, Mrs. Clinton is not president and the uncertain status of the cost-sharing payments now looms as the biggest threat to the stability of the insurance exchanges created under the Affordable Care Act. A dubious decision made by the previous White House has handed the current administration a powerful weapon to wield against the health care legislation that it despises.

Wonderful.
Burn that bitch down.

Wonderful.
Burn that bitch down.

So are you saying that the insurance companies and people must receive recompensation and President Obama should have to pay?
Geee, he might have to sell the new house.

I'll believe the GOP Elites have an intention to deal with Obamacare when I see them actually DEAL with Obamacare.

Look...they've had five freaking months to do something. All we have so far is arguing and dragging feet. In the meantime, premiums keep going up...sky high deductibles make insurance useless to millions...the "affordable" part of Obamacare isn't there (and never has been there).

I think there are powerful Republicans in Congress...House and Senate...who, regardless their rhetoric, do not WANT to get rid of Obamacare. I think they are bought by deep-pocket people who do not want to get rid of Obamacare.

Until people get smart...until people get rid of those career Congressmen who are more interested in keeping their own nest feathered...Obamacare is here to stay.

Not to mention whenever the current office tries to do anything, from passing a bill, to whipping his own rear. The Democratic party steps in, and tries to strong arm it down out of sheer spite.

Wonderful.
Burn that bitch down.

I'm with you; the sooner we kicked these Trump Voters off of Health Insurance, the better. That will speed up the natural evolution process. After all, Obama, Trump, Congress and The Sente will still have you paying for their Government backed Insurance for life, while people like you blame each other for why they pay for it.

. Brilliant

There is absolutely nothing the Dems can do to stop anything. Quit blaming them when it's SOLELY on the republicans.

This is how Trump is causing significant premium increases for 2018.

Depending on Trump, PA insurers' rate requests could rise from 9 percent to 36 percent
Pennsylvania health insurers are requesting 2018 premium increases averaging 8.8 percent for individual plans -- but that's only if the Affordable Care Act stays as it is, state regulators announced this afternoon.

If the federal government repeals the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate, the Pennsylvania Insurance Department said, the insurers would request a 23.3 percent increase.

If insurers stop receiving cost-sharing reduction payments known as CSRs, the department said, the requested increase would be 20.3 percent.

And if both the individual mandate and the CSRs stopped, the department said, the requested increase would be 36.3 percent.

“These low percentages show that Pennsylvania’s market is stabilizing and insurers are better understanding the markets and the population they serve,” said Commissioner Miller. “I sincerely hope that Congress and the Trump Administration do not take action that could negatively impact the progress we have made in Pennsylvania.”

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina
Our ACA customers will receive an average rate increase of 22.9 percent for coverage purchased on and off the exchange. That’s according to our proposal filed with the North Carolina Department of Insurance for their review and approval. . .

Still, cost-sharing reductions have a big impact on North Carolinians. That became clear to our actuaries as we looked at proposed rates for 2018. If the federal funding continued, we would have filed an average increase of just 8.8 percent for 2018.

California
A recent analysis commissioned by Covered California estimated that rates for silver plans would jump by 16.6 percent if federal funding for cost-sharing subsidies were lost. That is over and above any annual rate increases on the table, said Covered California’s executive director, Peter Lee.

All in line with KFF's estimates a few months ago.
A new Kaiser Family Foundation analysis finds that the average premium for a benchmark silver plan in Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces would need to increase by an estimated 19 percent for insurers to compensate for lost funding if they don’t receive federal payment for ACA cost-sharing subsidies.

If you're experiencing a double digit premium increase for next year, thank Trump!

....do you know how our government works? Or even looked at it in the past say, 160 days?

I don't think there are many Republicans that don't want to get rid of the ACA because of their donors. They just know that they need a better plan first before they vote for it. Healthcare is one of those make or break issues politically. The AHCA passing could ruin a lot of careers.

I think you are wrong, but an explanation why would take too much space. This article will tell you exactly why I think you are wrong.

If you're experiencing a double digit premium increase for next year, thank Trump!

Or, conversely, thank the democrats for passing a bill that didn't do things the proper permenent way...because they couldn't even get their own party on board enough for it and were afraid of the ramifications...and so instead created a system thst would require people who actually oppose it to continue to support it to make it even MILDLY work.

It's like forcing a narcoleptic person to drive a car rigged to explode if it drops below 60 mph, and then blaming them for it exploding when they finally fall asleep and it stops. Sure, you basically built in the explosive feature and KNEW that they would never actually be able to keep it over 60 mph, but it's TOTALLY their fault for not keeping their foot on the pedal.

The ACA was built on an incredibly flimsy and tenuous foundation from the very onset that essentially required a Democratic strangehold on the executive level to keep it "working", in so much as it was previously. They did this with fully negligent and flagrantly reckless understanding that if the party who had "Get rid of the ACA" as one of it's primary platform planks got into power, the enormous about of yoga contorting stretching needed to keep that foundation afloat would not be done, and it would come crumbling down. However, there was little actual care about the fact because they knew their loyal voters, and likely many in the media, would do exactly as you're doing....lay the blame entirely on the republicans for letting a program they campaigned, and won elections, on (to end the ACA) fail, while wholly and completely ignoring the democrats roles in their malfeasance in the manner in which the program was constructed and built.

I wish there were a way to make government Republican-proof. But unfortunately we can't, which means they need to possess a modicum of competence when they take the reins.

Thus far they haven't displayed it. Hence totally unnecessary double digit premium increases.

According to your link Big Healthcare wants to keep the ACA and then move towards single payer. I'm not sure why that article has any credibility with you.

Who do you think is "Big Healthcare"? Hint: It's not insurance. And yes...they would LOVE to have the government be the single payer for their services. Do you find that hard to believe?

I wish there were a way to make government Republican-proof.

There is. Pass something that is fully funder and/or where the success or failure of the program is not entirely dependent on the whims of those in power actually throwing their full support behind a multitude of voluntary aspects of it.

What it seems you actually wish is for it to be a dictatorship, where democrats can just just do what they want without any opposition or problem or counter opinion, guaranteed to occur in exactly the way they want at all times in every way, and thus such extremely open ended and poorly crafted programs could be implemented....despite the fact they wouldn't need to be, because everyone would be in lock step.

Unfortunately, that's not how this country works.

What it seems you actually wish is for it to be a dictatorship,

No, I wish for a world in which the GOP doesn't drive up premium double digits just for the fun of it.

Obamacare will have quite a lot of problems next year even without a ruling on the law suit

Millions of Americans May Have No Obamacare Insurance Options in 2018

Humana exit shakes up 2018 ACA exchange, leaves Knoxville coverage gap. In other words, no insurance company in the ACA for Knoxville and its surrounding 15 counties.

Iowa may be without individual health plans if insurer pulls out

Seven states will be down to just one insurance company. That isn't a choice, that is a take it, take it option or be fined. Whatever premium they want to charge and whatever high the deductible is, according to the law, you have no choice. Buy it.

....do you know how our government works? Or even looked at it in the past say, 160 days?

Yes I know with a republican controlled congress, republican president the minority party can't do anything. The republicans can pass anything they want to. They used the nuclear option and they can continue to unopposed. Do you know how congress works now?

Then I guess you didn't watch the whole Travel Ban issue go down then... or the swing took at health care? "which might I add had the Democrats acting like damn 12 year olds."

Never mind then, I guess ignorance really is bliss.

Actually the law allows opt out from the mandate if premiums exceed 8% of one's income, or whatever it's at, and the silver plans cap deductibles

And then they can buy insurance on the private market...which without subsidies will be vastly more expensive. So no, it's not that Liebermancare is in trouble, it's that the health care system as a whole is in trouble. Which is why CA will be going to single payer and other states soon will follow

I have no problem with any state going to whatever healthcare system they want. Massachusetts has Romneycare, I guess California will call their Jerry Browncare or something akin to it. I didn't know about the opt out. But as I understand it, even if there are no insurance companies in the ACA exchanges at all, one still is mandated to buy health insurance and that health insurance must contain everything the federal government states must be covered, even if one doesn't need everything or want it.

But we'll see what happens next year. I've heard all these dire predictions before. Then most of them never happened. I think the bottom line is that unless both major parties sit down and talk this healthcare thing out, come to an understanding between them, then act, the overall healthcare will continue to fall apart. One thing I think has been proven, a single political party can't do healthcare or come up with a system on its own. But with Republicans hating Democrats, Democrats hating Republicans, polarization in short, cooperation to solve this problem isn't about to happen. Each party wants to use healthcare as a campaign issue, neither wants to solve the problem. Both want to use it to gain seats in congress in the short term and the White House in the long term. Doing what is best for the American people isn't on either political party's agenda.

I know you may need to take your civics classes still since you haven't graduated high school yet, but the Republicans currently have a majority in both the house and senate. There is nothing the Dems can do to stop the Republicans from voting on the Health Care bill they have and there is nothing stopping them from voting it through. Even if EVERY Dem votes against the health care bill, the simple majority from the Republicans can get it to pass. So no, it isn't the Dems it is SOLELY on the Republicans.

As for the travel ban, the Dems have NOTHING to do with that either, that is the courts. Maybe learn some more about civics before posting ignorant comments.
