Miami shuts down major African-American cultural event

Miami Beach Calls For End To ‘Urban Beach Weekend’ After Shooting « CBS Miami

So for 17 years now Miami beach has held "Urban Beach Week", a major African-American cultural event. Now Miami city commissioners want to have the event banned. Why? Because there was a crime committed somewhere (gasp!)

“Urban Beach Weekend is a thing of the past,” said Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Grieco. “After 17 years of trying to handle this and trying to measure success by the number of arrests or by the lack of shootings, this is something that we’re no longer going to tolerate.”

Because crime ONLY happens when you get large numbers of people of color together. Anyone want to try and tell me there's not crime at places like, say, Burning man or any place lots of white people go to?

It's sad that the city of Miami apparently would rather be bigoted than hold a festival that will bring a lot of money into their economy. People of color really need to boycott the city of Miami en masse to protest this.

The commissioners' response seems like an overreaction. And you're right, you can't possibly tell me that illegal activity doesn't go on at Burning Man every year. Although the question may come up about victimless crimes...

Lol if you think miami is a racist city you have never been there. It is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world.

I don't blame Miami. I see what happens here at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront every year. Shootings, stabbings, theft, fights, and harassment of the local citizens and businesses.

Nobody said it only happens with gatherings of people of color. Why would you lie like that? Don't put words in peoples' mouths, and don't extrapolate **** people didn't say.

Referring to one specific annual event, there's a lot of crime associated with it. if a bunch of white biker gangs got together and tore up a town every year, you'd want that event to stop. Quit being racist against white people.

Last year there were 46 arrests at Burning Man, most of them drug related. And that was much higher than normal. Urban Beach Weekend was more than triple the arrests, and that was average.

I'm no whitesplainer, but this should be taken in a larger context. MB has recently been making major changes to reduce crime, including the noise ordinance. It's pushing for a 2am last call across the board and taking other measures.

I'm not saying this isn't racially motivated, it may be. But MB is in the process of a major overhaul intended to make the area less crowded and noisy. I expect other major, night-long, events are on the chopping block.

Big whoooop! No town, county, or city is obligated to host any event with a history of violence.

I see what happens every year here at the beach and it's no fun for the cops, the citizens, or the business owners.

So I'm guessing that you were also against the Mayor in Portland Oregon wanting to shut down the Free Speech rallies in Oregon after the stabbing that happened there?

After years of complaints about out-of-control noise, petty crime and sidewalks crowded with tables and oversized umbrellas, Miami Beach is taking steps to clean up Ocean Drive.

The city’s land use committee, made up of city commissioners, on Wednesday heard from members of the Ocean Drive Task Force, a group of business owners who approached the city about a year ago with complaints of deteriorating conditions on the iconic street.

The task force submitted about 30 recommendations, calling for upgrading lighting, increasing police presence, banning music from golf buggies and other vehicles and having restaurant and bar owners scale back the size of café umbrellas that many complain have created “a tunnel effect” along sidewalks in front of many businesses...

The steps follow a Miami Beach City Commission vote in May to ban alcohol sales on the street from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Same thing happened in Atlanta with both Freaknik (Black Spring break) and Buckhead (blocks of clubs, the were largely attended by White people).
Crime, traffic, drugs and noise were the primary reasons.
