Obama Administration Admits to FISA Court Its NSA Illegally Spied on Americans

From Newsbusters:

All of the negative news about President Donald Trump provided a convenient smokescreen to obscure a story highly damaging to former President Barack Obama on Wednesday. As first reported by Circa News, “The National Security Agency under former President Barack Obama routinely violated American privacy protections while scouring through overseas intercepts and failed to disclose the extent of the problems until the final days before Donald Trump was elected president last fall.” As would be expected, the Big Three Networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) completely omitted from their evening broadcasts.

...“Declassified documents, first obtained by the news site Circa, show the FISA court sharply rebuked the administration,” Rosen noted as he began to read a passage from the FISA court’s opinion. “’With greater frequency than previously disclosed to the Court, NSA analysts had used U.S. person identifiers to query the results of internet ‘upstream’ collection, even though NSA’s Section 702 minimization procedures prohibited such queries.’”
Nets Blackout Massive Constitutional Violations by Obama?s NSA

Well, if we look at the numbers, it is a nothing-burger.

Violations appear to have been inadvertent, have been corrected, and given the small percentages listed above, were no big deal.

Officials "explained that NSA query compliance is largely maintained through a series of manual checks" and had not "included the proper limiters" to prevent unlawful searches, the NSA internal watchdog reported in a top secret report in January that was just declassified. A new system is being developed now, officials said.

The NSA conducts thousand of searches a year on data involving Americans and the actual numbers of violations were redacted from the documents Circa reviewed.

But, any attempt to take the heat of Trump in a firestorm will do, I am sure.

If its done within the confines of the law with a strict adherence to minimimation standards, then I dont have a problem with it either.

But thats not the issue, is it and spare me the race baiting drivel.

The issue is the NSA by their own admission greatly under reported minimization violations to the FISA courts and 1 out 20 or 5 percent of the NSAs searches of upstream data violated the safeguards Obama and his intel chiefs vowed to follow way back in 2011

Thats a 3 fold increase in searches on Americans and unmasking after Obama loosened the rules back in 2011.

Even the ACLU says these abuses are some of the most serious to ever be documented so no its not about Obama being black.

What you dont seem to have a problem with is a Democratic administration abusing its power for Political purposes. Im sure if the tables were turned you be screaming impeachment from the roof tops.

Worst case scenario listed a 5.2% overage on what should have been collected. 5% is not exactly rampant violations, IMO. It looks more like a case of "better safe than sorry" data collection methodology.

Remember when Bush sent FBI spies in to infiltrate Vegetarian Pot Lucks? This is the same thing...but, it's probably more justified since it involves overseas communications.

Usually Saturday's are a good opportunity to try to deflect the news from Donald Trump :lamo

... and they never work.

" But a chart in the report showed there three types of violations, the most frequent being 5.2 percent of the time when NSA Section 702 upstream data on U.S. persons was searched."

Was the 3 fold increase in upstream searches and violations inadvertant too ?? Upstream data collection involves American citizens who had no direct contact with foreign officials. The FISA courts and the ACLU sure dont think this is a " nothing burger ".

And apparently a good opportunity to troll given some of the post so far.

Depends on how you feel about keeping us safe. I notice that this is very much dependent on who sits in the White House.

For many (perhaps even most) Right Wingers, this sort of thing only matters if the guy violating the rules is a Black president with a Muslim sounding name. No one cared when Bush did it. And, they certainly turn the other way when Trump violates the first Amendment with an EO. In fact, many of those same people suggest Trump ignore the court and enforce his EO in defiance of the recent court decision.

This entire thread is about nothing other than alt right trolling.

Anything to defect from the Russian Agent in Chief. Well, maybe we should call them the new Russian First Family.

No it looks like after Obama loosened the rules back in 2011 a 300 % increase in upstream searches soon followed along with the number of violations. Upstream searches can tag American citiizens who had no direct contact with foreigN agents. Worse, their identities were unmasked in violation to the minimization standards set by FISA

Remember when Susan Rice argued that the unmasking was legal and in accordance with the rules Obama set in place in 2011 ?? She also claimed that the intelligence agencies were strictly monitored to avoid abuses. All lies

Why do you oppose the government scanning overseas communications? I love it. We should do it more often. I also believe we should monitor overseas bank transfers very closely. Hats off for Obama erring on the side of caution.

Like I said, if this was a Right Wing president and not the Black dude with the Muslim name, the Right would be praising it. And, they'd be right to do that.

Lol...I hope, no I pray that as this scandal heats up, that some Democrat throws out the race card and or tries to deflect to Bush. Thats basically throwing in the towel
If Russian collusion conspiracy theories are worth debating then so is this " “very serious Fourth Amendment issue,” as the FISA court put it.

AGAIN, these violations involved upstream searches of American citizens that had no direct contact with a foreign agent, so enough with the " overseas communications " nonsense. The race baiting ? I guess you cant help yourself.

Not serious at all. Smokescreen though is certainly is.

you are soo right. I should have posted "
HORRIBLE RIECHWING NAZI LIKE PROPAGANDA MISLEADS ON THE GREAT AND DEAR LEADER OBAMA'S HONEST EFFORTS TO KEEP DESIRABLE AMERICANS SAFE.

still arent doing the truth I see

False. They did have overseas communications, but not with known foreign agents.

the so called scandal will be a fart since the nsa was ignoring obamas instructions.

Thats mighty convienent. That Obama's rules changes was in no way correlated to the NSA increasing their upstream searches by 300 percent.

Susan Rice said it was all on the up and up, that the intel agencies were being closely monitored
This of-course was after her huge memory lapse on PBS when she said " she knew nothing "...

Oh wow, an opinion piece from a right wing rag (the ny post) is being taken as gospel. How fun.

Opinion pieces dont usually include NSA admissions of under reported minimization violations to FISA, or the FISA courts admission that this is a serious 4rth amendment issue.

False. They did have overseas communications, but not with known foreign agents.

Your wrong, read the damn link the Op provided.
Americans can be swept up in a upstream search and tagged if they're even mentioned in a conversation between a foreign agent and a American citizen.

They dont have to have direct communications with a foreign agent.

Yep, and don't forget that Obama is a secret Muslim, he faked his college transcripts, and wanted to kill your grandma with his death panels. Typical right-wing nonsense.

More irrelevent trolling, this is getting old.
