1. Both China and (within it's more limited capability) North Korea are ALWAYS seeking the location of foreign military assets in their backyards...and the seas are fairly vast.
2. Who says that if this story is true, it means that we ONLY have TWO nuclear submarines operating in that area?
3. Trump may have been just been blowing smoke, since Duterte has been making noises of drifting toward a closer Chinese connection.
Again, despite all attempts to make this a "horrible case of giving away classified information," it is just another tempest in a teapot as Trump revealed nothing anyone would not expect to know anyway.
Let me explain to you the reality of the situation.
China gathers an ocean of sensor data. They don't necessarily know how many subs there are, which makes the data rather difficult to develop an appropriate filter for. How do they discern a submarine from sensor noise?
Now, China can look at the sensor data around the time of the phone call and use that data to improve their counter-submarine capabilities.
And yes, if President Trump says there are two stationed off the coast of North Korea, that implies there are only two. If there were 8, he could have blurted out 8, but he didn't.
Further, rather than debate the seriousness of the disclosure (not terribly serious), you seem to absolve President Trump of having any responsibility for the carelessness of his own behavior. We don't generally publish submarine movements and deployments because their secrecy helps keep them (and by extension us) safe. Do you really think President Trump checked with his advisors to see if this disclosure was kosher first? I don't. I think he's a loose cannon.
