If I had the money I would love to buy the Pontiac brand.

Because corporations have more of a vote than you do.

If GM fails, there are going to be lots of Trump voters out of a job who will be demanding some kind of explanation.

So you want GM to continue to lose money in what are for them poor markets?

India sold roughly 3 million cars the majority being small and cheap.

South Africa is even worse a market

Pulling out of manufacturing in Europe most likely is a long term mistake but GM can in the future export cars to Europe

GM is doing well in the US and the world's largest car market China

GM sold Hummer 8 years ago, because it wasn't doing well.

GM ended Saturn 8 years ago, because it wasn't doing well. Its no-negotiation gimmick lost its charm long before then.

It also ended Pontiac and Olds... yeah... in 2009, because they weren't selling.

I.e. GM did what it should have done, and would have been very difficult to do in other circumstances: Dump underperforming brands and assets.

India is a tough market. Opel has been losing money since 1999. They probably should have sold it in 2009, but probably couldn't find a buyer.

Despite some of those drags, GM rebounded after its bankruptcy, and has been profitable for years. Its stock price isn't all that awful, it is way above its 2012 low.

As to why did the US bail it out? If GM didn't get a government bailout, the entire North American auto industry would have been destroyed, along with perhaps 1 million jobs. GM would have gone bankrupt and been completely incapable of paying its vendors, which would have driven most of them out of business. Ford, which was healthier at the time, uses many of the same suppliers; so Ford would have capsized as well.

As it stands, GM still employs around 100,000 employees. Feel free to tell those workers that their jobs are superfluous and didn't deserve to be saved.

The bailout has obviously kept GM alive for nearly a decade, and is likely to keep it going much longer than that. If we get a more graceful exit in 2039, that's definitely worth the bailout.

GM was close to selling Opel to Magna in 2009

A brand with no cars is rather useless.

Dude, its Pontiac. I would by that brand in a heartbeat if I had the moola. You don't need cars with the history that brand has. If I bought the brand I would eventually build cars under it. That brand had some very iconic automobiles. In fact I own a couple. A 1998 Trans Am Firebird WS6 and a 1978 Trans Am Firebird Bandit Edition. Then there is the GTO Judge, amongst other automotive icons that Pontiac produced.

If I owned Pontiac right now I would be hopping to produce a GTO Judge to compete directly with the Dodge Challenger Hellcat Demon.

and yet Benz is launching new models in India. sales in India fell by a fifth last year for GM in one of the worlds fastest growing markets. clearly there is a problem at GM

not doing well has long been popular at GM

Ford and Toyota both are ending production in Australia along with GM

Yes GM does not do small cars very well it does not for some reason want to invest in that type of car.

Ford uses Europe to do that and does it fairly well

Opel, isn't that the GM subsidiary that built tanks and planes for the Nazis and then received a $32 million dollar ($30 billion in 2016 dollars) settlement when the Allies bombed those factories?

Don't know but Ford made military equipment for Nazis

It was a rhetorical question, my point being that the US govt has already made the most egregious bailouts imagineable and that if GM or Ford are on the brink they should go ahead and be gone.

Well for australia, I assume you mean holden, which is an australian company heavily fronted by gm, they were doing decent but the australian govt decided to end subsidies for them, despite being one of the least subsidized car companies in the world, with their lack of subsidies and other coutries getting an abundance of them, they lost a foothold in australia.

For the rest of them, pontiac and olds were literally rebadged cars, they held appeal when they shared a gm platform, but each company yet unique, like an olds 350 was different from a buick 350 which was different from a chevy 350. If every company made the same cars same powertrain same layout, why have multiple brands to do the same thing.

For hummer they were a joke, the h1 was a military humvee with a redesigned interior and made street legal. The h2 was a tahoe the a humvee style body, and was very fragile compared to the h1, it seemed designed entirely for a soccer mom who wanted to feel powerful in a big truck but never wanted to leave pavement, oh and never leave pavement with them, unlike the h1 and real military humvees, they can not handle the stress of real off road. The h3 was just a chevy colorado/trail blazer rebadged with a mini humvee body, still terrible.
