I absolutely can't believe it!! This has got to be a record in American history. After only 118 days of Trump being in office, we now have a resignation from Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), Chair of the House Oversight Committee.

Wait, who’d you think I was talking about? :lamo

... But seriously - that's a shocker. We're only 118 days into this new term. Very surprising that you'd seek reelection and then quit just 4-5 months in.
Who does everyone think is going to be tapped by the Republican leadership to replace Chaffetz?

Goddamnit, **** you!

This has been circling the news for awhile. First Chaffetz said he wasn't going to seek reelection. Then he said he was going to leave his term early or something. Now, he's resigned completely. He's also in charge of the House Oversight Committee. When he ran for reelection last year, he probably thought he would be spending his time, hounding and sleuthing HRC. But, investigating Trump as a (R), when Trump gives you such fertile ground, to dig in, can be no joy for Chaffetz. I won't go as far to say, Chaffetz has seen a smoking gun, and is running as far as he can away from it, but, he clearly doesn't want to be a part of Trumpgate any longer. Side note: Chaffetz state is UT and the Mormons hate Trump in UT. That could have something to do with him backing away, to retain his voters support for a future Governor run.

Assuming there's a special election in deep-red Utah, it will be interesting to see who carries Chaffetz's district and by what margin. It will give us a pretty good idea of which way the wind is blowing regarding Trump.

This is quite a hasty departure, which makes me wonder exactly what someone has on him. Nobody beats feet that fast.

Maybe Chafetz was Israel's leak from the WaPo story, eh? How fast he ended his own career if that's the case.

I normally would have, but I saw that he had a press conference scheduled, and my brain went, "maybe? Holy ****."

Chaffetz had already said he wasn't going to seek relection. And he hasn't actually announced anything yet.
As to a special election.. hard to say. Utah was solidly for Cruz so there were quite a number who didn't care for Trump to start with.

I don't think it will tell us much...as you indicated, Utah is deep red and Chaffetz district is even deeper red than the others. A lot of Utahn's don't like Trump, but they LOVE LOVE LOVE their Republican party.

the thoughts ran through my head, "Really Winston, is this where you want to be, sitting on the couch in your living room, for hearing the big news, shouldn't you at least change into some nicer clothes? or preheat the oven to bake a cake?"

Utah might be deep red but they aren't really Trump fans, it was the lowest % of the vote he got in a state that he won.

Yeah, mostly because McMullen pulled 21 percent of the vote.

Could he be the first casualty of the Mueller investigation?

His district is as red as it can possibly get. The only indication of "blowing winds" we'd get from it, I think, is if a moderate wins the seat.

What would Chaffetz have to do with the FBI's investigation or the administration's not so well conceived attempts to shutter it?

One of the things that will fall into Mueller's wheelhouse is consideration of the leaks to the media...some of which very well could turn out to be criminal offenses.

I'm thinking more margin of victory than which party takes the seat.
