President Trump better get on this. He's The Man who will bring back jobs and keep America working, isn't he? And wasn't it just a couple months ago, weeks after the inauguration, when his supporters were crowing about how he already had such a great effect on the economy?

President Trump will stop this from happening. I have complete faith. :golf
Ford to cut 1,400 salaried jobs in North America, Asia

Good to believe in something.

He's gonna call and make us a deal, so we can start winning again. Believe me, folks.

It amazes me how Trump's supporters bought into Trump's B.S. He's going to bring back coal mining jobs? Please.

More fallout from Obama's failed economics.

But Trump said he WILL fix it.

Obama said I could keep my doctor, Hillary said she never sent classified email, politicians lie all the time. Only a fool believes one

Wasn't one of the major appeals of Trump was that he's NOT a politician?

Side note: The thread is not about Obama or Hillary or anyone else. It's about Trump and his Greatness and his promises. He stands alone in this.

Ford makes a crappy product, for the most part. Fix that and maybe they'll get somewhere.

I'm sure Trump can fix that, too. ;)

Not intending to continue with the derailing, but Ford's the best of the "Big 3". Three or four decades ago I would have said GM. Not anymore.

The sorry bastard seems incapable of getting out of his own way. He better figure it out, and fast.

I really do not want to spend four years doing a facepalm. Think of the cramping!

This isnt impacting industrial and hourly jobs-only salaried employees, is divided between North America and Asia, and all will be offered retirement or severance packages. So the total impact to the US jobs market is yet to be seen...but will likely involve several hundred new retirees in the US. Thats just accurately stating what is occurring. Is there really much to get spun up over til you know the actual impact?

"The problem is circled."

On a quiet night, you can hear a Ford rusting. :)

Yeah I know, but I've had work trucks (fleet vehicles) that were Fords, Nissans, Chevys, and Toyotas. The Nissan and Toyota trucks were arguably the best, followed by the Chevy trucks but not too closely. The Fords were awful, just utter crap. I had a Dodge last, it was pretty nice.

Ford's bigger trucks are decent if you don't get a lemon.

Nissan is great as long as nothing goes wrong. They can be a bitch to work on though, or cost you big bucks due to the difficulty of doing so. A Nissan owner of my acquaintance spent about $1000 changing out a 25-dollar sensor.... because the transmission had to be dropped out to get at it.

Dodge used to be a good domestic brand and still make pretty good trucks and SUVs but I am told their newer cars have a lot of problems.

So I figure its Toyota, Nissan, Chevy, Dodge, in roughly that order. Scratch Nissan out for older used vehicles.

I'm not paying money for a Ford product. If you give me one I'll probably sell it and buy one of the above.

Ok sorry I don't mean to derail...

That kind of engineering is totally inexcusable to me.

When we had the Ford trucks, on one of my many visits to the mechanic I said "I'd like a Ford-ectomy and an AddaDodgetome, please."

Mechanic cracked up. ;)

It's a trend with almost all automakers, deliberate i think. They don't want you working on your vehicle, and want to drive small-time mechanics out of biz so you have to go to the dealership where they have specialized tools and machines without which fixing it is almost impossible.

I used to work on my own vehicles... not anymore, too dang hard.

How?

Let's get real. Ford is cutting 10% of its international workforce. They aren't moving those jobs somewhere else. Car sales are predicted to slow down this year, after several years of strong sales. Ford is cutting jobs in order to reduce costs, increase profitability, increase its stock price.

What should the President do? Even keeping in mind that Ford is a big US company, is the President supposed to micromanage it? Subsidize its workforce? Tell Ford to build more cars than it thinks it can sell? Force Ford to cut wages by 10%?

I also have to point out that cutting ~1,200 US workers? That's NOTHING. Granted, it's meaningful to those individuals, but in the scope of an economy that should be adding around 180,000 jobs per month? The idea that the President should get personally involved every time a company lays off 1,000 workers is kind of insane.

I think that's part of it, absolutely. But, I think part is also the fact that with all the legal requirements which engines must meet they're simply too complicated and there's only so many places some things can be put.

I still do some of my own maintenance, things like brake pads/rotors, etc., but not nearly as much as I used to.

When talking about job, and the job market, there is one thing that people are not just taking into account. And that is the development of cheap automations that is causing jobs to go away. There is the development of AI, which will take away a lot of the middle class white collar jobs too. One projection is that out of the current jobs, 47% will disappear due to automation in the next 30 years... and there is nothing to replace them with. That's a lot of reduction of job positions. Among the predicted jobs that look like it might go away are taxi drivers, truck drives (self driving trucks and cars), many lawyers, manufacturing, eye glass makers, a lot of the auto shops (replacing tires for example), stock clerks, book keepers, journalists, etc etc. These jobs are not going to be getting replacements, and this trend will happen no matter who is president, or what party is in control.
