...to fire Comey?

No one was singing his praises.

...many think Trump's timing was somehow suspicious.

So my question is, "If not now? Then when?

Maggie, Trump lives in a Giant Filter Bubble. In his World, all must recognize his status as #1. He may praise and condemn you in the same sentence. You risk his condemnation if you dare criticize him. Please, at a minimum, prepare yourself for the possibility of his ouster or his resignation before the end of the term.

...to fire Comey?

Not much question that the Dems thought he should go. HC herself thought his bungling re emails two days before the election may have cost her the presidency. No one was singing his praises.

Dems don't support the firing now...many think Teump's timing was somehow suspicious.

So my question is, "If not now? Then when?

Morning Maggie,

have you seen this this morning? It's gone viral.

How would Trump have fired Comey last July when he wasn't president?

Read the OP (first line question) slowly, I know it's tricky because it starts as the title and ends in the body, but it asks when and not by who (we know that the POTUS is the one capable of firing the FBI director). I know many (like you?) don't like Obama getting mentioned so I did not do that directly.

My rationale was clearly explained - the best time to punish/discipline someone is immediately after the event. You don't spank a kid at age 10 for something they did at age 8. However, simply because they got away with something at age 8 in front of Mom does not mean that they can do so at age 10 in front of Dad. ;)

Good morning, Vesper. :2wave:

When watching the video you posted, my first thought was "Hillary is indeed making plans to run for POTUS in 2020!" Now that Comey has been effectively blamed for her loss in 2016, true or not, the world is suddenly her oyster again. Ain't propaganda great?

And that is possibly our biggest societal political problem now, I'm beginning to think, the rabid blind obedience/opposition.

Yes, it has been for some time but I think at no other time than Clinton v Trump has it been demonstrated to be so horrible. And now that Trump is in, we see it coming out on both sides. It's what has broken the system and solidified Republocrat Rule over the People. This blind partisanship allows the Party to operate without consequence, and now they know it. So the Party doesn't really care that much, and now they're completely removed from the Will of the People since we do nothing but support them no matter what.

The death of political competition and the rise of political ignorance has doomed the Republic.

Realistically...the best thing for him to have done would have been to leave him in place and gone on about the business of being President. The reality is that there has to date been no meat on the bones the democrats are so desperate to gnaw on. So he should have let them all keep playing their stupid game while watching democrat after democrat after democrat after CIA director after NSA director after FBI director all admit the same thing. To date...there is no evidence of collusion.

THATS why we need more investigations.

And every time they grudgingly admit it, point it out and carry on.

The one thing Trump DOES have the opportunity to do is appoint an FBI director or even a special prosecutor that will conduct an ENTIRE investigation. Clapper admitted yesterday there were some 1934 US citizens unmasked in 2016 alone without a warrant. I think there should be an investigation into just who it was that the Obama administration kept ordering to be unmasked, who had that intel, who was it given to, how did it end up in the hands of at least one Clinton campaign operative, and who committed the felony offense of leaking that classified material. So...one time...investigate it all. Bring a reputable democrat like James Webb on board. Be unbiased. Investigate everything. Hang guilty parties out to dry.

As being fired now and not another time, Occam's Razor might be applied.
Rosenfeild was only recently appointed and confirmed by the Senate.

FBI Director reports to Deputy AG.
Deputy AG isn't a political appointment, he's a career AG.
Gathered his consensus among other AGs (both parties).
Wrote his letter, sent to his boss, AG Sessions.
Sessions wrote his cover letter sent it to his boss, Trump.
Trump wrote his letter and sent it (hand delivered it) to FBI HQ.

Hi Pol!
Actually I have a different take. The democrats were 'using Comey as part of the reason Hillary lost the election and many called for his removal after the election. She herself blamed him. Today they cry crocodile tears that Trump fired him. They can't have it both ways. By complaining about Comey's firing they have undermined part of Clinton's excuse for losing. In essence they have thrown her under the bus.

I think I have found the answer to an ongoing irritation of mine: I am going to find a huge map of DC, and hang it on the wall next to my computer - then I will post this emoji next to it... :blah: ! I have no doubt that I will immediately feel better every time I look at it! :lamo

January. After the Russia investigation concludes. After the appointment of an independent type investigator taking over the Russia investigation.

Doing it in the middle of an investigation in which Trump and many of his closest people are major figures is just a bad idea.

I especially like your thoughts re "after an independent type investigator has been appointed." In fact, you brilliantly addressed my thoughts on this person. Calling this person an "independent prosecutor" belies the position.

When he took office is the obvious choice, if Comey was so bad, and Trump had seen him plenty in action, why not do it as part of the new blood in the white house?
Short of that, he should wait until the investigation concludes.

Tump praised Comey for messing with Clinton. He then fired him, so he claims, for his handling of Clinton.
But really, I don't think he should have fired him for the reasons he stated, nor should he lie about those reasons, nor should he have fired him in the manner in which he fired him. So many issues, on so many topics.

Had Trump done this more professionally (a phone call to Comey to kick it off), and then told the public directly why, and how he would ensure the investigation would conitnue, that would have met his intended goals of firing Trump, and this not being a huge issue. It would have looked I don't know, kind of professional.

I am not sure I follow what you are saying. Did you interpret my comments to mean I thought Comey was an independent investigator(not, not prosecutor, I believe there is a difference)? If so, you misunderstand, and I make no such claim(nor do I claim the opposite, that he is not independent, I don't have enough information to make a judgement either way). Or am I the one misunderstanding what you are saying?

Maybe I wasn't clear. I completely agree with you. AND your use of the term Independent Investigator (which I understand he was not) is far superior to the term independent prosecutor. Independent Prosecutor assumes wrongdoing and, imo, sets the wrong goal for the position. I hope we get one of those actually. Hope that makes sense.
