Re: New York Times scraps 'female genital mutilation' for being 'culturally loaded' t

A top New York Times editor decided the paper shouldn’t use the term “female genital mutilation” because the phrase is too “culturally loaded” and widens a divide between the Western world and “people who follow the rite.”

My God

If female genital mutilation were occurring at the hands of Christians, you can bet your top dollar the NYT would use the term so fast it would make your head spin.

Although I can't for the life of me find any reason why the NYT would turn away from this, to say that this is a practice solely within one culture or one religion is not accurate. There are both Christians and Jews that perform FGM, as well as non-religious groups as well, it's not really a religious thing.

The Jewish and Christian view on female genital mutilation

Abstract

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a practice involving the removal of all or parts of the female external genitalia. It has been documented in 28 African countries and in some countries in Asia and the Middle East, but due to increasing immigration from these countries to the western world, FGM has become a worldwide human rights and health issue. Contrary to the belief that it is a practice carried out by Muslims only, it is also practiced by Christians and a minority group of Ethiopian Jews. However, FGM is neither mentioned in the Torah, nor in the Gospels, and – like in Islam – bodily mutilation is condemned by both religions. In fact, FGM is a mix of mainly cultural and social factors which may put tremendous pressure on the members of the society in question.

The article came from Fox News, but I Googled the story and it checks out.

The NYT is making a mistake here. I get that they understand that word choice matters, but yeah, word choice matters. Call the barbaric practice for what it is.

I have a copy of the AP Stylebook on my desk that I've had for about ten years and I use it all the time. I doubt that there's an official PC term to use for FGM in there, but I'll check tomorrow to see. If there's a PC term to use in place of another term, it'll be in there.

Truth is, I don't know if PC culture is the real reason here for the NYT's actions. I can't really put my finger on it, but at first glance it looks like a combination of discomfort discussing it, a reticent attitude toward offending a nonwestern culture by comparing them to western values, and a little bit of just plain cowardice. They didn't have a problem running hard hitting articles about the crazy "pray away the gay" crap. Why is this any different?

That's where victim culture ends up every time, people dont believe in themselves or where they come from, they are trained to not.

My God

Surprise, surprise. Carlos Slim doesn't let his blog tell it like it is.

My God

Being polite can be helpful or do harm. It all depends on the situation. Maybe it's like using four letter words or talking of abortion as a Holocaust.

I doubt if there is a single Christian group in America that practices or honors female genital mutilation.

Any obscure foreign group that does should not be allowed to immigratie to America.

We do not have any pressing need for Ethopian Jews and certainly not Jews who are that alien to our culture

That has to be one of the most bigoted and ignorant of reality posts, that caps it off with an anti-Semitic final statement just to make sure, that I've read in a long while.

If the Ethopian Jews practice female genital mutilation there is something seriously wrong with them and we should not allow them to immigrate here

Male genital mutilation is standard practice among many Christians.
