Trump's Job Approval in First Quarter Lowest by 14 Points

APRIL 20, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Donald Trump averaged 41% job approval during his first quarter as president, 14 percentage points lower than any other president in Gallup's polling history. Bill Clinton had the previous low mark of 55%. The average first-quarter rating among post-World War II presidents elected to their first term is 61%, with John Kennedy's 74% the highest. The results are based on Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 20 through April 19. During this time, Trump's approval rating ranged from a low of 35% -- in the days after Republicans' failed attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act -- to a high of 46% shortly after his inauguration. No president before Trump had an initial approval rating below 50%. His poor debut followed his subpar ratings on other measures during the presidential campaign and his presidential transition.

The results are based on Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 20 through April 19. During this time, Trump's approval rating ranged from a low of 35% -- in the days after Republicans' failed attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act -- to a high of 46% shortly after his inauguration. If Trump hopes to avoid setting a new low in average job approval for an entire presidency -- Harry Truman's 45.4% average is the lowest in Gallup's history -- he would need to improve his ratings among independents and Democrats, because the vast majority of Republicans already support him. But in an era of intense partisanship, Democrats' approval of Trump may not budge much from its current level near 10%, similar to the way in which Republicans' opinions of Obama held near 10% after his first year in office.

In-toto, Trumps poll numbers suck bigly. He spent the entire first quarter in Negativeville.

I think Don Cheeto is slowly figuring out all he has to do is just bomb the Hell outta everyone he doesn't care for, which is everybody, and his poll numbers will go to da moon

soon the planet will have a never before seen glow visible from other planets & Don Cheetos poll numbers won't matter any longer :2wave: .......

Don "Cheeto" doesn't see to be as orange lately. Still has the white sun goggle thing going.

Trump's views reflect a minority - not even plurality - of Americans. This was evidenced by his dismal election results trailing another highly unpopular candidate.

He stuck to his platform initially, but failed to make much of a dent in it. So now he's veered away from his platform and base in some points. IOW, he's pissed-off most of the country, and now has pissed-off some of his supporters.

Also, he's not likable - but in fact is confrontational and abrasive. And he lies continuously.

In light of the above, his low approvals are not unexpected!

With negatives like that he'll never be president! Oh wait...

Popularity (approval?) polling also spells doom for congress critters that somehow manage a re-election rate of over 90%. The polls that matter are called elections.

I think they are higher than I would expect.

I believe you may be conflating general congressional approval, with individual congress critter approval.

Congress persons are a lot like lawyers: We tend to like ours - but we don't like the other guy's! ;)

Wow - that's a scary thought!

But he did get a recent bump after his hawkish stance and activities (and he knows it).

Its not surprising, really. First of all, we had the two most unpopular candidates in the history of the nation running against one another. Whoever the winner was was going to have a popularity deficit. Second, Trump is a gaff machine who cant seem to stop tripping over his own message. Third, you have a united democrat party whose entire goal is to discredit and protest his every move. And finally, you have every major media outlet pushing the negative leftist narrative. The fact that in light of all of this he is still at 41% is rather astonishing frankly.

That is likely true but much of what the POTUS does (or does not do) is really up to congress.

its not liberal media bias to say Trump is doing dumb **** because Trump actually is doing dumb ****.

I didn't say it was. That is the second post in a row of mine that you have had difficulty comprehending. Perhaps there is someone nearby that can help you understand what I am saying before you type out a reply.

Ahh, so your "negative leftist narrative" was talking about... what, exactly? Something other than people pointing out dumb **** Trump is doing?

Trump is, by far, the worst US president in the past 100 years.

The one who benefits the most from a Trump presidency = George W. Bush. He no longer has to worry about being considered the worst president ever. He probably considers it payback for all the trash Trump talked about him from 2001-2008, not to mention destroying his brother Jeb's chances at the presidency.

Yep. Bush is looking better and better every day. Kind of like how Bush made everyone forget about the Clinton scandals until Hillary decided she needed to have them all come up again.

You know what's funny, is that I never thought GOP voters could do worse than Bush. But now with Donald Trump...man who will be the next asshole they nominate in the future? Kid Rock? Ted Nugent? Bozo the Clown?

I started seeing it with Sarah. Once they began using her to court the stupid, I knew the GOP were in big trouble. I just never expected the stupid to win the General. But, Hillary brought along the perfect storm.

Yeah, the GOP has gone down hill massively since 2008. The Democrats electing a black man with a funny name has screwed them up so badly, that I don't think we'll ever see the older more saner GOP again. Expect more Donald Trump's in the GOP's future, IMO.

That the Confederate wing of the GOP elected a NYC big government liberal is the real news this year. Of course, it helped that he told them everything they wanted to hear and threw them a bone by nominating a backwoods racist for attorney general.

GOP voters proved in 2016 that they'd be willing to elect ANYONE as long as they told them what they wanted to hear.

Hell, if Hillary wasn't as old as she is, she probably could have waited 8 years and ran as a Republican spouting the same crap Trump did. Who knows, she probably could get elected president by GOP voters too.

John B Anderson way back in 1980 was the last fella who tried to tell the voters what he knew we did not want to hear......he believed that America was up to the challenge of doing the right thing.

It did not go so well.
