Easter Is not a Federal Holiday

Easter is a dying holiday, and some folks are a little touchy about that.

Easter never has been a national holiday. Although when I went to school, 1950's, the kids were given good Friday off. In elementary school we said the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer every morning before class. Times change along with the amount of Americans who are religious. I went to a small country school. Of course that was a time in this country when almost everything was closed on Sundays with the exception of a gas station or two.

Now I see why Christians whine, prayer in schools, Christmas displays in City Hall, schools, public places were the norm and accepted back then by one and all. No one thought ill about them. All of that has disappeared in what appears to them as an attack on their religion. Back then there were no basically people of other religions residing in this country. Other than Jewish that is.

Just some quick history there. As far as making Easter a national holiday, no. MLK was an American, Jesus wasn't. I think religion should be a personal thing. I think the religious ought to be left alone and let them practice as they see fit. I don't think they should push their religion on other, the same as I don't think the non-religious should push their non-religion or doing away with religion on others.

My elementary school, although public, was 100% Christian. We sang Christmas carols at assembly before the Christmas holiday; we had good Friday off and the following week as well, and they called it Easter Vacation. This was in the late 1960's/early 1970's.

Times change. That is for sure.

I don't remember having the week off following Easter. what I do remember is the last day of school was always the week before Memorial day and we never went back until the day after Labor day. We also were off on all the holidays the day they fell during the week and if on the weekend, forget it. On Thanksgiving it was always Thursday and Friday. Outside of the two weeks for Christmas, I don't really remember any weeks off, that doesn't mean it didn't happen. Just too far back to remember exactly.

I forgot about the Christmas Carols and decorating the school for Christmas, Easter too. Back then Memorial Day and Veterans Day were big things. Now most holidays are just a day off.
