Donald Trump is coming for your Social Security: How the GOP plans a bait and switch to cut taxes — and pensions

I was the first & only potential GOP candidate to state there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid. Huckabee copied me.

The Republicans will never give up on trying the destroy the safety net. It’s one of their fundamental organizing principles along with promoting tax cuts. Other issues may come and go but these two are perennial. And according to the Associated Press, the administration has decided to scrap Trump’s previously announced tax plan in favor of a new “reform” agenda that will accomplish both the dismantling of the Social Security guarantee and the GOP’s cherished tax cuts for the wealthy. The Trump team is also, unsurprisingly, being dishonest about its intentions. Social Security expert Nancy Altman described this move as a Trojan horse but considering Trump’s ostentatious promises to protect the program, perhaps it’s better described as a garden variety bait and switch. Simply put, Trump and his team are planning to completely abandon Social Security’s dedicated funding stream from the Federal Insurance Contributions Act payroll deduction and pay for the program with general revenue. They will sell this as a tax cut for workers, which is what it will look like on the paycheck. But Trump’s rumored innovation is to replace the money with a form of value-added tax, which means that typical workers, who spend most of their money on consumer goods, will still pay taxes; they will just lose their retirement guarantee. Rich people will get their tax cuts and don’t need Social Security anyway. It’s a GOP win-win.

With Trump's broken-promises AHCA fresh in mind, the above scenario follows the Trump & Ryan pattern of enriching the wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

Trump unequivocally promised not to cut SSC. He carried this claim as a bastion of his purity and loyalty to the people. Anyone who wasn't head over heels in love with their right wing ideology, saw that Trump was a big fat liar. Just so we're clear, Trump was full of ****. Whether or not he understood that, when he got in office the GOP was going to cut SSC, Medicare, and Medicaid, because they don't believe in entitlements, I still think that's beyond Trump's level of political comprehension, and this new GOP plan, will likely be written by the direct beneficiaries to cutting SSC, and given to Trump with a "sign here" bow on top.

Just so we're clear, Trump welched on another campaign promise.

Here's a list of Trump's broken campaign promises,

1. Repeal and replace - Now, maybe we'll repeal and replace at an unspecified date, but right now, Obamacare=BAD and Democrats=Scary! Bad! Sad!
2. Non-interventionism - Now, War with Syria=Patriotism and National Security and every other bull**** talking point the GOP trotted out pre-Second Gulf War
3. Not cutting Medicaid - the AHCA cut Medicaid, and Trump said, "DUHHHRRGGG, Me no understand complicated health care. DUUURHHHGGG"
4. Draining the Swamp - Trump has put too many Goldman Sachs people in his cabinet, allowing Wall St. to run his economy, like they always have.
5. SSC - Now, SSC will surely be cut, affecting seniors livelihoods, and negatively affecting the economy, as it gives more money to the top, who horde it like a dragon hordes a gold stockpile. Seniors need their SSC checks. And they spend their SSC checks, stimulating local economy, generating revenue, and securing other incomes by their spending power.

I'm curious if Trumpers will swallow this continued betrayal. Stockholm syndrome, much?

How does cutting SS benefit the rich?

Normally we don't see this sort of demagogic bilge until it's an election year.:bs

It helps finance their tax cuts.

Drivel. It is amazing that with an idea as dumb as ending the payroll tax you have to come up with fake-reasons to dislike it. The tax was on imports, that would make the cost of good overseas on more on par with production here. It basically applied a payroll tax to foreign goods. I happen to work in IT as we were shipping jobs over to India. The cost of IT jobs here was 15.3% higher than those abroad. That is a heavy tax to pay when those on the other side don't. Separately Social Security isn't guaranteed, or we wouldn't be discussing automatic benefit cuts.

The problem with the idea is that it will make SS bigger and more out of control.

Where in that entire article does it say anything about cutting benefits? No one expects Salon to be honest, but to see them bend over backwards to spread such dishonesty is beyond pale.

Guarantee? When has SS ever been guaranteed? The fact that benefits will be cut by 25% in 2034 is well published on the SS web site. It is no secret. The cuts will be the result of there not being enough money in the fund to pay out at 100%.

Now someone comes along and floats an idea that will solve the 2034 problem, and the left wets their pants. Unbelievable...

meh

Salon is too partisan for my tastes. When someone proposes an actual cut to SS, then we can hold them accountable for that choice.

As little as Trump's word is worth, I seriously doubt they will slash SS benefits, at least not any time soon.
