It may turn out that the widespread belief that most Americans' incomes have stagnated for years is, well, false or at least overstated.

Say what?

No doubt, many Americans feel that, except for the rich and segments of the upper middle class, they've been treading water economically for years. To take a prominent piece of evidence: In 2015, the average "real" (inflation-adjusted) wage of workers was about $21 an hour, almost exactly what it was in 1975.

That's nearly half a century without a wage increase!

Or is it?

In a provocative new study, economist Bruce Sacerdote of Dartmouth College reviewed the material well-being of the poorest 50% and 25% of Americans. What he concluded was that even these families had achieved a "meaningful growth in consumption ... (despite) a prolonged period of increasing income inequality ... and a decreasing share of national income accruing to labor."

To reach this counterintuitive finding, Sacerdote relied on three types of evidence. The first was...

...many Americans feel that they're not getting ahead, whether — in a material sense — they are or they aren't. There are many plausible explanations. Sacerdote speculates that the rise in inequality may make Americans "feel worse ... even if their material goods consumption is rising." Or maybe it's just disappointment. People got less than they expected, and the pace of change was so slow that it seemed like stagnation.

The evidence that people's incomes are down are:

  • Everyone 'knows' that incomes are down.
  • Everyone feeels like they're not better off.
  • The Census Bureau says real family median incomes are down from their peak a dozen years ago.

The evidence that incomes are up:

Only because stuff is so cheap now, because workers increasingly dont get paid, and none of this is great because humans need to greatly reduce our consumption in order to save the planet so we are going in the wrong direction on that...plus you know....the income inequality is breaking the nation and the fact that the poor have lots of cheap crap and are very well fed by historical standards of the poor does not in anyway compensate for.... wait for it...... the society becoming unglued.......and the poor not having enough to do....... or even worse,......the poor being exploited. .

What we have here is a failure to properly prioritize, and let me tell you, this is a huge problem in America today.

I mostly blame the education system, which has been turned into an indoctrination system, because getting to UTOPIA is EXACTLY that important.

Education got tossed overboard in pursuit of something not helpful and dark, because the elite are EXACTLY that stupid these days.

They are EXACTLY that immoral as well.

THEY SUCK!

We live pretty well. Better than our parents, i don't know. How compare? Real consumption is better by many/most measures. It is not by some monetary indexes. Yhink about whether it is better to have a higher nominal or real income. That seems more or less all Samuelson is saying. Is it better to feel rich or be it?

Yep. We have poor intellectual grasp of important matters, mixed up our values and priorities, lost sight of where we are going or should be; are confused.

And we are being confronted on many of the resulting areas of misunderstanding by a plan fully developed non linear war initiated by Putin. His Gerasimov Doctrine is being more successful than he could have ever dreamt it could be.

We are undoubtedly stronger beyond anything we have ever been. But we are full of doubt.

Putin had no idea that Western Culture is so weak now till he started poking, and watching the result.

Of course he keeps at it, Now as part of team China/Russia/Iran....presumably they representing the future global leaders.

We have few good leaders, we cant follow for crap, we have no smarts, we have little gumption, we care little about quality, we live in our fantasies and reject reality...

The next Dark Age is here.

I don't know that Winter is here, but there does seem to be a chill in the air and the repairman for the heating is vacationing in Florida.

I am not going to claim that I am Grand Maester but I am proclaiming that Winter is here. I first suspected that it was near 20 years ago, and now there is no doubt IN MY MIND.

I am sometimes wrong.

I'm sorry to hear that.

The rise of Trump is another great warning. Trump in 18 months brushed aside EVERYONE who had worked their way up to the top in that crappy order called DC ELITE both the D and the R DIVISIONS.

What stunning degrees of ineptitude they all showed us.

They dont act like they learned a damn thing either.

If the pain of Trump was not enough to teach them:

What will?

Yes. It is breathtaking that none of our representatives could argue their position convincingly. It was the same thing with the EU elite in the campaign against Brexit. They could find no convincing justification for the exquisitely expensive project of 50 years that they declare yheir greatest success.

Please, tell me one(And lets be clear I hope for a lot more) place in the world that can and does grow good leaders anymore.....

I am desperate to believe that humans can still do it.

I don't know that "good" is the best expression in his case, but Putin has seemed a successful leader.

Putin is good but he is just one guy, maybe he is a fluke. Leaders are not cultivated anywhere that I can see, and you dont seem to know where we do either.....kinda looks like we are ****ed now dont it.....

I think that I shall retire from this thread, as it does not suit my mood, and I have decided to act like everyone else....from now on it is all about me.

Or maybe not.

Better let me sleep on in.
