Political Bias on the U.S. Supreme Court

As I recall, the Florida Supreme Court at the time was at least equally goofy and biased, despite the Republican presence in the state. I remember one of the justices asking what the law in Texas was. She was, apparently, simply trying to point out the irony that what was being done in Florida was contrary to the law in Texas. Bush's home state. Of course laws in Texas are completely irrelevant to laws that the Florida Supreme Court was concerned with. Stupidest question ever at such a high court level.

I would like to ban political parties. The most harmful special interest groups. There is no logical reason to force some binary reasoning in the complex nature of government. There is no logic as to why Democrats take this or that stand and the Republicans as a whole take an opposite stand. EXCEPT to gain political power and merge competing groups. Everyone should run as an independent and there should be no DNC or RNC. Speaker of the House chosen by all house members, not the majority party members.
But don't know how to legally do that banning of parties.

If wishes were horses, I'd have a pony!

Eventually, the Dems will be back in power and the partisanship of the Supremes will swing the other way. Since the appointments are lifetime, however it's gonna be awhile. Bader-Ginsburg and Kennedy need to hang on at least 4 more years or we're gonna be in trouble.

As for you and me, the GOP could pack the Bench with 9 Jurists and we'd soldier on! I just don't want others to suffer from that type of injustice. If we can aspire to keep doing the next right thing for the common welfare for the largest number of people, we can have hope for a better future! Let Grace, Honor, Humor and Love guide us!

For those of you who might wonder why you don't get a reply from me until much later tonight, I have some other commitments to attend to.

Thank all of you who have participated in this thread!

I hope you're attending a Star Trek convention! Say "hi" to Bill Shatner and Patrick Stewart!

It seems the plan of all politicians is to politicize everything and undermine democracy

In my opinion, only one political party denies science and uses religion to get people to vote against their own interests.

So black men that aren't liberals are stupid to you. How... predictable.

It's so refreshing to see a conservative playing the "race card". Sigh...

I don't go to Star Trek conventions. I did see the movie early in 1977. Age 20 and hungry for adventure, I had recenlty taken a semester off from school and spent ten weeks as a hobo in W. Europe. This trip included seeing snow for the first time.... a massive amount of snow near the peak of the Matterhorn in Zermatt.

Back to the movie - I watched it in North Miami Beach. When I came out of the movie, I saw snowflakes falling. I felt like "The Force" had followed me back from Europe. I had never seen snow in Florida before that night. I have only seen snow in Central Florida one time since then.... a pretty heavy snow, enough to make snowballs enveloped a good bit of Florida on Christmas Eve 1989.

Man, hobo-ing in Western Europe in your 20's sounds like a blast. I should have done that before or after college. Remember now, "The Force" is a Star Wars, not a Star Trek reference. I know... I'm showing my extreme nerd-ness!

Maybe we can agree on "Easier said than done."
Oh yes. Agreed...absolutely. The parties are so invested in party and ideology that it has corrupted our system absolutely. What would be awesome would be if we started by electing candidates that were worth a damn.

I laughed when she posted that. I don't think "White Man" comes to mind for most people when they first see me.... more often "Native American Indian" (refer to post #1336 in Tavern pic(s).

I come from the same tribe as Freddy Prince Sr, Tony Orlando and Giraldo Rivera.... half Anglo/half P.R.

I couldn't resist. I remember seeing a "Daily Show" feature on Thomas. Right or wrong, almost 30 years later he's still not over the Anita Hill accusations. He came off as a really angry person.

Oh yeah... my BAD! Brain Fart! I totally merged the two into one big meltdown blob. Now as the fog lifts and a clearer vision emerges, separate details have begun to reappear. Han Solo starred in Star Wars. Captain Kirk and his Vulcan 2nd in Command starred in Star Trek.

True. But there seems to be a lot of people, including Justices, who believe that corporations should not have rights. Clearly that logic would apply to the Democratic and Republican parties (inanimate groups) and if the court decides that organizations don't have rights than these parties would lose much (or all) of their power.

I made a comment about Thomas that set her off. Thomas, I believe, has the thinnest file by volume over time as to written opinions on decisions of the sitting Justices. I absolutely did not refer to him as stupid. He did graduate Yale Law. He may have passed several Law Bars.

You know better. I admit to having had enough experience with you to recognize the nature of your disagreeable posting. DP has room for both of us.

:lamo

My "disagreeable posting." What happens is that I challenge what you say, perfectly politely; you don't like it because you can't defend what you say, and you start insulting me.

The record of this thread, and several others, bears that out.

I note, in addition to my prior comments to you, your stinginess in giving "Likes".

The things you focus on rather than the actual discussion.

If you made cogent arguments, you wouldn't have to throw this kind of spaghetti at the wall.

Thats it im pulling both your nerd cards. Neither of you mentioned buck Rodgers or battlestrar galatica. You also missed the bonus point reference if you mentioned any of the planet of the apes.

If your gonna be nerds be good at it.

Tighten up and dont make me chastize either of you a second time

Do you want me to coddle you and treat you like a lovable puppy? You don't challenge me. You annoy me. No way no how have you continued posting for years on DP and others not noticed your intransigence. You routinely deflect, redirect and try to assume control. You have now become obsessed with me. You troll me. Out of all the threads, you insist on returning to this thread, one that I began and you repeatedly ask me questions. I have no intent on answering questions from you. Scat now!

Dude.

This is SO disconnected from what actually happened in this thread, I don't know if you think you're serious, or if you're delusional.

Yes, I repeatedly ask you questions -- questions you've refused to answer. That's what happens in debate. This isn't a book club or a quilting bee. It's not a hippie love-in. It's a debate site. If you don't want your posts challenged, find a mutual admiration society. I already said this once.

The problem is, you have no idea what you're talking about. But for some reason, you think it's unfair to expose that. On a debate site.

I don't what color your skin is... Never even entered into my thinking.

Troll much? You continue to obsess over my posts. I feel pretty comfortable in my skin. I ABSOLUTELY do not respect you. I like DP enough to donate regularly. Even your unrelenting unpleasantness and disagreeable nature has not deterred me. In the only two threads you have attacked me in, I dominated you over and over. A therapist would probably have a name for your behavior. As for me leaving because you dislike my debate style, see how that works our for you. I grin! The fact that you have remained around DP so long lets me know the DP Gestapo allows for a wide spectrum of debate styles, intelligence and lack thereof. If you don't believe I can endure you, we both get to find out in time.Meanwhile, peace and blessings to you and those you love!

See?

Nothing but insults; cannot back up his arguments.

Okay. Whatever you thought, some of your posts came off as way, way out there. I hope you have people you trust and love to talk to face to face. Peace to you and those you love.

I believe Justice Thomas graduated Yale Law School. He clearly has a bright mind. Please do not misinterpret any of my prior comments to have meant I consider him stupid.

Syntax, spelling and punctuation affect credibility. Maybe a lack of oxygen to your brain has affected your writing?

and when they can't actually address the topic the ad hominem.
so you lose yet again.

but you have following the typical liberal poster argument. congrats.

deflection fallacy noted as well as the concession.
